Band To Watch: Real Estate

The words after the backslash at their MySpace are "Let's Rock The Beach," but Real Estate are more about the lovably down-and-out Jersey Shore than a pristine Caribbean. The quartet mention Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood NY, Jersey City, and Brooklyn as their location (that's two out of four, which counts), the Boss and "New Jersey" itself as influences. On top of that, their MySpace Top 8 includes Titus Andronicus and the Ridgewood, NJ Real Estater Matt Mondanile also records as Ducktails, and therein has a song called "Beach Point Pleasant." So, see, we're making shit up with that Jersey Shore claim. Beyond geography, songs like "Suburban Beverage" mix languid psychedelia, muted vocals, a boomy undertow of drums, and jammy repetitions that somehow conjure fellow Garden State crew the Feelies (then again, that could just be because of how they look). It makes sense they mention the Clean as an influence, less so the Beach Boys, unless it's about the sand. Maybe it's best to call it a sunsetting, less ethereal Galaxie 500, but before it gets too dark. Or ignore our descriptions and see for yourself: We have a demo of "Fake Blues" -- which will show up in a different, in the band's eyes "better" version as the A-side of a TBA second 7" and debut full length -- along with "Black Lake" and "Suburban Beverage," the A-side of their soon to be released first 7".

While listening to "Suburban Beverage"'s "Budweiser Sprite, do you feel alright," read up on Dan Rizer's Budweiser Sprite project. (Also, if you're writing a Real Estate bio, the three members not mentioned so far are Martin Courtney, Predator Vision's Etienne Duguay and Alex Bleeker.)

The band's aforementioned first 7" is out 2/1, but is available for pre-order via Underwater Peoples. As Real Estate note at their MySpace:

you can pre-order it by emailing underwaterpeoples@gmail.com and putting "pre-order" in the subject, it comes with a free cd of the tracks (what? sick!), and the vinyl is going to be white as the burning sun ... You'll also be able to buy it from us at our shows.

Courtney told us, "the songs on that were recorded mostly by me with Matt before the band really coalesced." These sound great, so we're really looking forward to that coalescing. You should be able to witness said coalescing on the future releases: The second 7" will be out on Fred Thomas's (City Center, saturday looks good to me) label. Release date TBA. As far as that LP: They told us they're recording it by themselves and there's no release date ... and that's about it But, if you're in the NYC area, you can check the guys out tomorrow with Oxford Collapse at the Studio @ Webster Hall. And, you can hear a couple other songs at MySpace. Excellent stuff with a lot of promise.

McG

never thought the bastion of uppity young preps, aka Ridgewood, NJ, would be such an indie hot spot. As Titus would say "Now you're doing time for stealing candy from a babe because all the kids in Ridgewood have got cell phones these days."

Amen. Love Sunny Day Real Estate - good taste. Check out my band's video if you have a chance. We're hugely influenced by Sunny Day.

The name Real Estate is waaaay too close to Sunny Day Real Estate. Just like the Whigs is way too close to the Afghan Whigs. What's next, the Bunnymen? The Pistols?
