Band To Watch: Colour Revolt

With a recent re-release (on Interscope's indie arm, Tiny Evil), Oxford, Mississippi's Colour Revolt should expect a bit of a hullabaloo (is that what they say in the South?) over their promising, self-titled debut EP. The six-song effort catches the band exploring Broken Social Scene-tinged dream pop, post-rock meltdowns, Isaac Brock's vocal assaults, and dirty, post-grunge dynamics. There's even a bass line that nods to Surfer Rosa. But after you've finished playing RIYL, you're left with a buzz-worthy debut from a group of hungry, young Southerners. Here are a few tracks, and download another at MySpace.

Colour Revolt - "A New Family" (MP3)

To satisfy requests for something "heavier":

Colour Revolt - "Our Homes And Graves" (MP3)

The EP was mixed by Clay Jones, who also did some work with Elvis Costello and Modest Mouse (to help explain Modest similarities). The band's on the road now (we hear it's a kick-ass live show) and, New Yorkers, your chance is at their 11/4 CMJ showcase at Knitting Factory. Don't miss!

what? that was so boring. and all that publicist-pitched positioning to make them sound credible and cool? god. indie rock is getting dull and duller by the second.

I think I like A New Family more. Does the whole EP sound like that? It's really good, but six songs of the same may not work. I like his voice.

No, the ep is rather varied and a lot of the songs are a lot heavier I guess the term is. oh and they're amazing live, I hear they play a sweet Neutral Milk Hotel cover.

I've seen them live 4 times (they were opening each time, one of them acoustic) and didn't really like them all that much but gave their EP a chance and end up really liking it.

I've heard all of those EP tracks for a while now on Future Perfect Radio.

The heavier tracks kill, the ones up here a little weak in my opinion.

haha. the comments are so split. i guess i'll throw mine in. i saw colour revolt open for brand new back in july. i thought they were pretty good, so i bought the EP at the show. "a new family" is a great song, but i'm not totally into the other songs. they were good live when i saw them, however.

I'm so glad you guys are posting about Colour Revolt. not only are they great guys, but their EP rocks and their live show is great. They're definately heavier than most indie rock, but so so good

I think I prefer the second song, but I'm actually not crazy about either one. The first one sounds like a lullaby I'd put on for my nephew...in fact, I should do that.

I'm from Oxford... Colour Revolt (formerly known as Fletcher) are originally from Jackson, Mississippi. They're alright live, nothing spectacular and their songs aren't that spectacular either. However, Clay Jones is a cool guy and he did some great work recording them. Most of the members of the band are really cool guys too, except the drummer - he's a real asshole. Pretty cool to see my hometown's name on Stereogum though. Maybe someday my band will make it here...

Happy to see the exposure they deserve here @ your site...

As far as I'm concerned, this band saved my life. They are very talented people, and incredibly humble and polite in person. I've never fallen in love with a band in a live setting that I'd never heard before until I saw this band.

For a horse of another color, and if I was at the track, this is the COLOUR I'm listening to - and LA indie band

"The Devil's Gotta Hold On Me" has to be one of the hottest tracks of the year.

I went to high school with three of the members, so I've been listening to these guys for years, since they were known as Fletcher. This album is such a huge step up for them. They're great live, and the more I listen to the album, the more I love it. They're great. Trust me, buy the album and see them live if you get the chance.

The recording on the EP is meh, but the songs are great imo. It's all in taste. I happen to love them. I heard them online and it wasn't really exciting, but then I saw them live, and it was incredible. Jimmy is insanely awesome.

I'm just so impressed at how well they use 3 guitars simultaneously and incorporate things like harmonica to make such a unique sound.

The only song on the EP I really wasn't thrilled about vocal-wise was Change Your Name or Change Your Face.

you indie-nerd-elitist-know-it-alls should really get over yourself and get a life. they are great live and the ep is one of the best things i've purchased all year. the drummer is not an asshole, maybe you were as uninteresting and pretentious in person as you are on the internet. i know i wouldn't talk to you if you were.

the guys are all very down-to-earth and humble and i go to their shows whenever they are anywhere close. they are very honest and they play some of their songs completely different live than on the album. that tends to bother me with most bands, but it works for CR because they never stop trying to better their music. the isaac brock and bss comparisons are a stretch, but people always need something to relate their music to.

Colour Revolt makes me excited about music again. if you don't get it or don't like it, turn it off. and then when the rest of the world hears it and enjoys it, tell them how you used to listen to them before they were popular. snobs.

I first heard colour revolt on radio. enjoyed the song, but one listen wasn't enough to really get it. All my friends saw them and raved about how great the show was, so i figured i had to see them. to tell you the truth i was shocked hearing how heavy and honest their lyrics and sounds were. it was intense and i felt myself shrinking in the room as the singer screamed like a banshee from the pulpit of hell. it was like the wrath of God all at the same time, it wasn't so much the voice but the content. i thank God i have a soul to appreciate it. but even then, i related them to modest mouse (and the pixies) because one listen live still wasn't enough to understand (at least they did it well i thought). i was too busy analyzing their everymove, to surender to the music.
seeing them this last friday at the cavern in dallas finally stired something in me. their songs were played slightly different, which would usually agitate me, but it didn't matter
after the show i had to admit the fact that this was colour revolt. they can play however they want, and i will love it.

anyone who has a heart and a soul. and can put aside what they think they know about being a "good music critic" will love it.
i'm not saying they are the best. but they are doing a damn good job in a world that is littered with mediocrity.
I thank God for the day he made Colour Revolt.

what i deduce from these comments are:

1. this band knows a ton of people.
2. their live shows must be pretty crowded
3. everyone agrees that they pretty much suck on record but are OK live.

man! why aren't more people way stoked on this band?? i mean, they're really nice guys! and nice guys have to make good music!

Trust me--as a publicist (and, yes, Colour Revolt's publicist)--Stereogum is not swayed by PR hype. They might choose to comment on the hype surrounding a band, but they are bigger than PR spam. They pretty much create their own hype, so why would they worry about what publicists have to say? Scott, Amrit, and co. about whatever they want. I WISH they bought all of my hype, but they are free spirits. I just don't understand Billy's anger at the beginning of the comments.

And anybody who thinks this band is not good live needs to have their head checked.

Aside from all of the elitist garbage alot of you folks have been disguising as a critical analysis, my contention is that this band makes very powerful music, and you're all morons.

Who cares if they're nice guys or not? I personally know they are, but that has nothing to do with the EP.

Since when did making music become some kind of competition?

My personal favorite is "Blood in My Mouth"-- what a song, seriously. As a matter of fact, I haven't heard anything out of this band that I haven't liked. I could literally go on for hours talking about why I love this EP.

And to say they're not good live, are you sure you were watching Colour Revolt? That's one of the many reasons Colour Revolt is so impressive; not only are the records phenomenal, the live performance is nothing short of engaging.

Not often have I run across a band with such a raw approach to making beautiful and intense, not to forget intelligent, music.

Save limiting your cliches and the mundane, spiteful remarks to something as ordinary as your own attitude. What you speak of is not Colour Revolt.

Tons of disclaimers: I've seen Colour Revolt live at least ten times--many times behind the bar of the Musiquarium, where several of the guys worked in our downstairs music store. And I have a Fletcher sticker on my record player.

And: they're pretty damn awesome. One of the great things is seeing them develop as a band in the past five years, from being an excellent, spiky, jittery post-punk teenage band to what they are today (what that is, I couldn't quite tell you).

I rarely put their record on at home, but I hate to miss their live shows--because, at least here in Mississippi, they're volcanic.

I think so many of the people are saying "great guys" because they just are, and it's hard not to emphasize that when you talk about them. Last week I got to talk briefly to Beth Ditto from the Gossip, and since then I can't shut up about how great she is. I loved the band already, but her friendliness put it over the top.

And, to Nick above--the spelling of the name comes directly from the book where they found the phrase. Ah, you jaded elite!

Colour Revolt is one of my favorate bands im from Jackson and I saw them for the first time a few nights ago. I had always loved their ep and im not saying that they are GREAT live but they are really good live and absoloutly amazing musicians. The best song,if anyone actualy looks into them which you should, is Blood In Your Mouth or Circus. They are amazing and Jimmy Cujoles is a really nice guy. SO EVERYONE GO CHECK OUT COLOUR REVOLT. Also check out Pistolita they played with them when I saw them and they are good to. so yeah

i'm going to be as honest as i possibly can. i've NEVER been more excited about a band in my life. i'm good friends with the guys from the arcade fire...and when they were blowing up, all i could talk about with them, ...was how good colour revolt was!

these guys write some of the most intelligent and heartfelt music that has been released in years! and to call them emo or "idie" doesn't even touch the truth.
these guys are a true example of what rock is supposed to be!
all of the music coming out these days is just BS. a bunch of people who read a book on how to make music that will sell.
and the majority of the reviews i read on here are those exact same people.
they found a band who isn't following "chapter 3" of "how to make it in the music industry", so alarms are going off in their head. THE BOOK DIDN'T TELL ME HOW TO FEEL ABOUT THIS MUSIC....IT MUST SUCK. well my friends. thats why techno was created. for people who don't want to think about music. or care about art. or search for something different.

so go buy "dance hits vol. 9" and stop writing on these messsage boards about something you obviously have no actual perspective on.

my thoughts on the band:
live shows - incredible
ep - flawless
the guys - as humble as they get.
half of the people who wrote reviews on here - yuppies
