Band To Watch: Suckers

After listening to any of the four tracks on Brooklyn quartet Suckers debut self-titled EP you won't be at all surprised to learn that Yeasayer's Anand Wilder produced it, along with Chris Moore (TV On The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Think "2080" minus the kids. The group, which includes BTW Quinn Walker, constructs songs around uplifting group chants and harmonies and an at times dub-like, always joyful synth-and-percussion based instrumentation (with some bass providing the low-end, tons of shakers). Walker's joined by drummer/keyboardist Brian Aiken and fellow multi-instrumental chanters Austin Fisher and Pan. Speaking of "Pan": Scene-wise, you wouldn't be off placing them square in the colorful, fertile circle of MGMT, Chairlift, and Amazing Baby. Just look at how they're dressed. Now look past that and listen:

Suckers - "Easy Chairs" (MP3)

There's a snazzy new version of that "Body Movin'" track on The Fader this week that's pretty killer.

Ah yes! Some more "campfire chanting" and the default percussion of people who can't actually play drums! This is the future! I mean, the future is here! I mean, right now I feel like listening to c-grade Animal Collective!

I'll take "C-grade" Animal Collective over most of the over-hyped bands around today.

a) I've heard this band is amazing live. Plan to see them at Crash Mansion this Sat
b) This drummer is immensely talented (listen to a few more songs on their Myspace)
c) The lead singer/songwriter is as close to a wunderkind as I've heard in a long time

One thing is for sure, "suckers" is not going to be a torrent-friendly search term. Unless, of course, you can filter out any results that also include words like cock, sperm, etc.

The Suckers are cool, and with a name like that they will be very popular all over the world! I don't think they need to worry too much about being torrent-friendly Nylund, their fans will find them!
