Basement Jaxx @ Webster Hall, NYC 10/11/06

Sometimes a show is best measured by past venue experiences -- and by that standard, Basement Jaxx was the most over-the-top, exhilarating dance party we've seen at the Hall yet. The floorboards haven't done the Webster-wobble like that since Bloc Party last year, and for once, it was nice to be on the giving side of the venue's Concert-Hall v. Dance-Club-Below bass blast-offs.

After being patient with the tame (and green) Lily at Hiro the night before, watching Felix and Simon bring their turntables, horns, percussion, larger-than-life singers, and hype men to Webster was a treat of Wembley proportions. This is an act that, in the UK, has nearly sold out the 13,000 capacity, aforementioned arena for a night in December already -- and putting them on the Webster stage was like cramming an elephant into an East Village one-bed: The roof was torn-off and the walls were busting. Basement Jaxx consistently turn out the finest in dance music and live somewhere around the intersection of Hipster and Clubber. It's a funny place. The Jaxx trotted out the hits, they posed and pushed, and left us all in tatters.

why has nobody realized (in blog-land at least) that there was only one jaxx member. simon, the one that actually plays during the show, was in absentia. i kinda missed him.

loved the show. still think crazy itch radio is a bore and the songs from it were the low-light. especially that horrible 'take me back to your house' track. wow. but, those guys put on the best show in dance music.

I really like Basement Jaxx's music but haven't been a huge fan of their live show. I would love to see them do a strictly dj set sometime. Looks like they didn't do Get Me Off on this tour which is good. I thought it was very tacky before when they had the two women making out during that set live. It might have passed if it was attempted to be done in an artful way, but when I saw it, it was just sloppy :)

ive pledged to see the Jaxx live any chance i could since catching them at coachella 04.
last years set at the hollywoodbowl was just as awesome.

so it sucks that i had to miss them here in LA last week cause of my chemo-treatment cycle.. so what im saying is, only Cancer can keep me away from some Basement Jaxx live!
thanks for the review!
