Again, awesome artwork for Beck's album cover. This one looks like Marcel Dzama from the Royal Art Lodge.
I saw his secret show out here in LA last weekend. They sounded great, but he seemed pretty lifelesss. He's definitely not charismatic enough to pull of the rapping.
Score = 0
um, he's been doing that shit since '93. i think it's safe to say he's been pulling it off. also, it's been well documented and even HE has said that his un-charisma is kind of the point. "i'm a loser," etc.

didn't Atom heart do an Ascii Video back in the 90s?

is it just me? i get a blank white window when i click on the Real link. d/ling's no good either.

Good song . The hooks are already in my head after one
listen. Of course that makes it the perfect track for
a ton of commercials. It seems Nissan or Fox are usually the first to pick it up. Go Beck!

reminds me of Michel Gondry's Lego White-Stripes video, except not as interesting. The song sounds too late-90s for my taste!
Score = 0
I kinda like it. Honestly, though, I'm almost waiting for some mashups on that riddim to drop.

oh man, i love that e-pro remix! so good. anyone know how to get an mp3 of that?

aha! it's on the ep release. never mind!

i don't like it all that much until about 2:45. it starts to rock then, but it's too late.

I don't know what to think, beck's using plenty of underground internet things like ascii art, mumbleboy's flash animations, nintendo sounds, but to me it feels like he's just desperately trying to get some street cred back. The song with gameboy sounds has just the intro sound like that, then turns into regular beck. I love beck, i don't want him to go boring like that.

too late...

that's definitely marcel dzama, whom I adore.
The song's not bad. Infinitely better than the over-produced space rock of 'sea change'... after that album, I thought for sure we'd lost beck to scientology (*shudders*).
I'll take vintage beck over lame beck any day.
Score = 0
how the hell did they get Marcel Dzama to do that??? Must have been a very big cheque. I guess his Lodge due are sorted out for a while.

I gotta agree with Mario. Beck is good. But there's a desperation to this album I also felt while listening to "Midnite Vultures". Somewhat predictably quirky which makes it not as fun.

You consistently insult Beck's music and person, but the only thing that's lame is your overcritical and snobby posts. Why don't you people get a life instead of trying to criticize someone else's? Just because Beck's album isn't some untouchable piece of melodramatic, anime pretensiousness doesn't mean it isn't good. For crap's sake, that's why there is so much crap, because too many people can't figure out what is even good.
And please, stop writing like every word you say is completely precious. I don't care how self-important you are, at least take the time to form coherent thoughts when picking apart someone else's.
PS: Return to listening to "Loser" and Odelay and praising Beck for his music. Because in your eyes, all the rest is crap.

i don't agree with Jack, beck may be a bit more restrained, but i wouldn't say guero is shaping up to be desperate-sounding, though i think you could say that about midnite vultures.
i have to say i like all the high-tech dressed as low-tech videos to date.
and beckfan, unless you're joking, look at the comments you are so harshly and personally criticising. you'll find that the majority of them are very supportive of beck, and for those that aren't, those people are entitled to their own opinions. that is, after all, what comments are for, not just gushing praise.

From Mutations to Sea Change to Midnight Vultures, Beck's music can make me happy or sad, dance or sing, and I thought that was what music is supposed to be for. One of the many things I love about his music is that he has fun and doesn't seem to care what all the critical music snobs think. Personally, I am happy and excited to hear and see whatever Beck has to offer us this time around. One video, which I can't even download fully, isn't enough for me to judge the whole album. I am intrigued and can't wait to hear all of Guero. If I don't enjoy it then I won't listen to it.

the posts by Beckfan have to be a joke. the exact same thing happens in a movie that recently came out. if anyone can think of the exact reference, post it. the movie is relatively popular
even though Beckfan obviously isn't serious. the responses to his "internet diatribe" are pretty inciteful. i am still trying to think of the exact name of that mo-vie.

The Secret Life of Beck Hansen
Rumors have been around a few years suggesting that alt rocker Beck Hansen had become a member of the Church of Scientology. The real question should be, when was Beck NOT a Scientologist? Has Beck been lying to the media and his fans?
more here:
http://lermanet.com/beck/
"Scientologists believe that most human problems can be traced to lingering spirits of an extraterrestrial people massacred by their ruler, Xenu, over 75 million years ago. These spirits attach themselves by "clusters" to individuals
in the contemporary world, causing spiritual harm and negatively influencing the
lives of their hosts."

Are you kidding me- how is midnite vultures not genious. any body that knows anything about beck knows one of his most notable peaks was MV. The electronic bulid ups and genius abstract yet vivid lyrics with the most innovative perspective on funk to come out in years, shit decades, and you people think MV sounds desperate, Those arrangements are amazing and if anyone alse can think of an artist who has succesfully blended funk and indie together as well as beck than be my guest. Not only is it danceable but extremely intellectual at the same time Beck is a musical genius and MV is probably one of the biggest testaments to that fact if not the most. nicotine and gravy, debra,..those songs alone blow the top off modern music ARE YOU KIDDING ME

ADEMAS NO ES TODO...LOS DEMAS VIDEOS DE GUERO TAMBIEN DEJAN MUCHO QUE DESEAR LAMENTABLEMENTE
PERO ASI ES BECK...UNICO. Y LO QUEREMOS TAL COMO ES.

Beck is the quintessential sociologist, he never fails to ignore society and what is within it, musically speaking and thus appreciates differences by abandoning all the genres and oppressive catergories, that are more exclusive than incorporative. And that is why I love to love Beck, the moon-child.

I came across Beck's music quite by mistake after downloading a screensaver...?...I thought to myself "Wow, that's pretty good music"....Strange Invitation by Beck ..nice. Later that month.. listening to this other awesome music in my car "Wow, whose music is this?" Beck again, E-pro. I'm becoming a new fan, but from what I gather, I believe Beck is the second Chameleon of Rock, first being Bowie. I think I'm on my way to a strange invitation of Beck.

I love this cd. I was able to listen to the remix of "girl" & "broken drum" on the public radio station in detroit... both were exceptional. you got to love Beck there is nothing else like him.
I saw him in concert several years ago with Ben Fold and Sean lennon. He was great, I'm 47 yrs old. I've seen the best rock bands of the 70's and the best jazz artists that have toured in the last 30 yr's. Beck is great.

Give a guy a break...so he has someone fashioned in his likeness to dance for him now, and yeah, he's been through some shit the past few years as evidenced in Sea Change, but he's evolving as a person and his musical expression reflects this. Furthermore, he just had a baby. Do you have any idea what that does to a person's energy levels? Come on. He's still totally rockin' the casbah. Don't be so abrasive!

seriously, Beck is the most talented and nicest guy around and all you idiots do is say crap about him. seriously, his music is amazing.
it chaged my life anyway....

i guess people can have their opinions. i mean, we don't have to like every album he makes.
however, i certainly love his music, and haven't found fault in any video, song, lyric or anything else that beck has done or took part part in.
i think it's great that we all have our own oipinons, though.
by the way, Sea Change is amazing, Midnite Vultures is fantastic and Guero blew my mind, as have all his other albums i own.
oh, one more thing,beck's a scientologist. get over it people! (i'm not speaking to anyone in particular just anyone who is bothered by it)

beck's music has changed my life and my views on music, definitley. i mean, for me, when i but an album buy one of my favourite artists, i listen to every song and appreciate every song. i mean, if i hear one track and on the first listen am unsure about it, i always end up loving the track after another listen.
i don't know if it's just me, but i generally love every song i hear by a musician i love. it's like i appreciate everything about the music, and the many layers of the songs, or what technique was used, or what the lyrics mean.
goddammit i just love music.
