Behind The Broken Social Scene
As promised, a few more shots and thoughts on what most of you agree was the single greatest set of this weekend's Windy City festivalen. After snapping some shots for the first few songs, we went backstage and, if you were there wondering, rest assured; the band felt the magic too. "We gotta always do it like that," Emily said while hugging Amy and kissing Jimmy after a serene "Anthems Of A Seventeen-Year-Old Girl." She finished, "With everyone." And that was the vibe the entire time backstage; hugging, kissing, smiling faces, and lots of "This is fucking unreal!" Chants for "One more song!" took minutes to become "We won't leave!" -- and neither did we.
We kept bumping into the entire Toronto indie family: the Stars kids (Amy and Torquil, who told us about his solo project), Jimmy and Emily, Brendan and Kevin, and of course Lady Feist. The gang was all there. We kept hearing mumblings of just how rare it was for Amy, Emily and Leslie to be on the same stage, and we're still losing it that they managed to get the band back together (all sixteen of 'em!).
We threw up some Feisty "7/4 (Shoreline)" on YouTube. It's poorly synched for your pleasure (one day we will figure that shit out). Pre-show, Kevin told us he was cranky and hungry, but remembered Stereogum from our coverage of the band's Red Hook show and promised to log on post-Lolla. So, everyone, say "hi" to Kevin. Unfortunately I only saw the last half hour because I came from Wilco. But it really was amazing. Third time seeing them and they truly are one of the best live bands, no collectives, around. I was yelling along with everyone there for one more song, but to no avail. It truly was special, and might have made the whole 16 hour drive from New York worth it by itself. I hope they continue having a prosperous career, it doesn't seem like there are much nicer people in the music business.

man, no stereogum posting can be complete without some naysayers. No, they might not be the most technically proficient band in the biz, but they have alot of energy and passion, and their songs rock. Plus they reach an emotional apex with most of their songs that few bands could ever dream of achieving. They just build and build and send it all tumbling down by the end of the song, leaving the crowd spellbound and hungry. This is why I believe they are a great live band. F U, if chords are your thing, I don't know what to tell you, except to visit a prog rock blog/board where you can talk about chords and musical mastery until kingdom come.

It wasn't quite as transcendant as last years Lolla Arcade Fire set ... but it was awfully close. It was certainly my own personal highlight from this year. Although Secret Machines and Raconteurs come in a close second.

I saw nearly the entire crew (I think only Feist was absent) with members of the Stills and Final Fantasy and a few other guests last year at Ottawa's Bluesfest. I would imagine that Lolla trumped my experience a little, but nevertheless, incredible.

Saw them all together (minus Feist) last year at the Hillside Fest... and a few of them doing solo stuff at this year's fest (plus Feist)... absolutely amazing live. They astound me. It's just energetic and fun and well put-on. Definitely one of my top bands to see live... :) I'd go again and again.

Wow, everytime I see them my heart smiles for a week straight. Thank you Broken Social Scene, for not forgetting about the music. I am 26 years old and I am so lucky to say I have the the whole band twice. Please don't ever fall apart.

all i can say about that set is wow... i was so upset when the schedule came out and they had only a 45 minute allotment, especially after having see them for the first time at Celebrate Brooklyn last month and how much they jammed... but despite the short set it was my fave of the weekend. It was truly amazing how much everyone was into it... Hopefully Perry realized this too, and maybe BSS will be invited to be one of the headliners next year...

What a great set. It really was something to behold, as anyone that was there knows. I was kind of near the front and as the set was going on I felt like something special was happening. I'm glad to see others felt that way. Those who didn't see them missed out. It made enduring the heat, crowds and long lines worth it. I left immediately after so as not to ruin the feeling that I had. (I had been planning on staying for a few Chili Peppers songs). BTW, Fuck the Peppers!

aww to see all of them on stage at once would be amazing. when i saw them in february they only had lisa lobsinger, but she did a pretty impressive job. and yeah, they were also one of the best gigs i've been to all year, easily. they know how to keep an audience mesmerised for close to two hours.
and stank booty (what the fuck name is that btw)... the best actual comment i've heard by a fellow audience member was some dude saying to his friend "oi, this is the guy who sings that 'love generation' song right?" while waiting for brian wilson to come on stage.

i've had the pleasure of seeing these guys twice this year. let me say, utter amazement both times. the most recent time was the festival on olympic island in toronto, and they played for just over two hours, and they did the same unisoned clapping/screaming thing. it really was amazing.
i also saw them in january at kool haus in toronto. that show was much more intimate, and just under three hours long. fantastic. these guys are seriously just amazing.

Seen them twice in the last year here in Dublin (Ireland). Both gigs are up there with the best gigs ive ever been to ever And im glad to say I get to see them again in 2 weeks time at Electric Picnic....happy days...
Got talking to Kevin after the first gig and he was even so good as to talk to my girlfriend on the phone (she was in Australia at the time) who was going to their Sydney gig soon after that gig!

That show was so amazing, definitely my favorite of the entire music fest. We were definitely denied of an encore though, which was totally depressing. The entire crowd was screaming "Fuck the peppers!" Absolutely hilarious.
Hope they'll be there next year, was truly spectacular.
