Bell Orchestre Play Tonic, Arcade Fire Play Union Square

Let's Do This has the scoop on an impromptu Arcade Fire gig that took place down the street from Stereogum HQ late last night. (Via Brooklyn Vegan.)

We're walking up the stairs from the N,R at Union Square, bout 2a.m. Sat night. Couple street musicians are banging out some tune when we get up to the park.

Holy fucking shit.

It’s Arcade Fire.

Covering New Order. Win and Will on guitars. Regine on
guitar-case-as-percussion. Why the fuck not?

Jac's photo proof:

AF completists take note: Richard & Sara's sideproject Bell Orchestre play Tonic tomorrow night, with National sideproject Clogs going on first at 8 PM. These instrumentalists' ambient chamber pieces may not get your fists pumping like "Power Out," but it's pretty mood music (if you're in the mood to take a nap ... or score a film school project perhaps). This track (from Recording A Tape The Colour Of The Light, out 11/8) actually sounds like an elevator music version of Arcade Fire. Elevator Fire!

Bell Orchestre - "The Upwards March" (MP3)

Clogs' lovely Lantern is out 2/6, and here's a preview of that.

Clogs - "Ostinato"/"Five:Four" Medley (MP3)

I really really like Clogs and the Orchestre. And the Arcade-Fire-as-street-musicians? "Why can't I live in NYC?" I rhetorically ask myself sadly.

Whoa. I saw "Bell Orchestre Play Tonic" and had the Arcade Fire/New Order cover on, and I expected to read that Belle Orchestre did a cover of that horrid, horrid Tonic song.

This is one of the coolest stories I've heard all year, and proof of digital technology's capability to make the ephemeral permanent.

Good lookin' out.

Please don't come back to Montréal, we're sick of your brand of overrated mediocre music. Saw Rufus Wainwright last night at Théâtre St-Denis, there's a local worth the hype, he covered chealsea hotel by Leonard Cohen, again somebody worth their hype. Even those drunkards, the Dears. Sorry Arcade Fire, you just don't measure up.

Rufus Wainwright is great if you want to fall into a heavy sleep. In other words—boring as f***

big deal, regine was banging on the drum case. more fun if janet jackson was doing her ass percussion in the middle of union square. that would be a story.

I have this theory that all gay white males under the age of 45 are required to listen to and like Rufus Wainwright. It has yet to be refuted.

I'm not gay, and I love Rufus Wainwright. But, obviously being gay he has a large gay fanbase. Conversley, being retarded, the Arcade Fire have a massive developmentally handicapped fanbase.

I don't know who this Rufus guy is but it is hard to imagine anyone being better than the Arcade Fire. As for fans of AF being retarded, I have yet to see one mentally challenged person crooning wake up.
