Beyond Martin Luther, Upgrade Computer

Whoa, heated Gwen debate on The Gum (Rob coined that and I'm stealing it). Anyway, here's my two yen...

Yes, Gwen Stefani's lyrics are ri dic u lous. Does she want props for name-checking John Galliano and Mario Andretti (yikes, Amy Grant flashback)? Plus, we've heard all these jams before! Biggie already sampled Isleys' "Between the Sheets," B-Boys did dancehall Fiddler On The Roof first, intro to "Harajuku Girls" mimics "Papa Don't Preach," "The Real Thing" is really New Order covering Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," etc... And then there's all those cringe-inducing references to L.A.M.B. couture.

But ... c'mon, did you expect some grand musical statement from the lead singer of No Doubt? I've always been captivated by Gwen's reinventions; now she's giving us the disco jawn of the year. It's fun and silly and totally hott. Bananas hott. Tarzan couldn't take this kind of hott. It's so hott Adrian Young's already looking for session work. It's so hott I'm gonna buy my own Harajuku girl.

Pre-order Love, Angel, Music, Baby here or stream tracks at The Leak (scroll to the bottom for Jason's photos of Gwen at TRL). And before you ask: "Danger Zone" is not a Kenny Loggins cover. Sucks, I know.

I hated the single so, SO much when I first heard it, then I began to aquiesce...now, suddenly, I find myself downloading it, and a bunch of other mp3s and really digging them. Could Gwen be the Kylie of 2004, since the Kylie of 2004 let me down? I don't know if I'm ready to love again, though.

Hey,

has anyone else noticed that the melody Gwen Stefani's single ('What'cha Waitin' For', or whatever it is called) sounds just like 'Hash Pipe' by Weezer?

Sniff sniff, is that the scent of lawsuit?

hey ross--yeah, i totally noticed the hash pipe/what'cha waitin' for similarity! i'm glad i'm not the only one. but unless matt sharp wrote that melody, i doubt we'll see a lawsuit.

if you don't pay attention to any of the lyrics (i can't decide if she's trying too hard or not hard enough), this has got to be the best dance pop album of the year. you'll recognize bits and pieces of lots of pop songs you've heard in the last twenty years, but then you'll remember why you liked them so much.

Aside from the fact that everything on the album is a ripoff, and that I almost peed in my pants when I heard the Andre 3000 duet (as socially URGENT as it may be), that song "Serious" is totally glorious. It's like Apollonia's back in action. I'll never buy the album, though. That's because the cover art looks like Disneyland Tokyo vomit with a photo of Madonna on it from that creepy "Bedtime Stories" video and I don't want to accidentally look at it and cry myself awake when it gives me nightmares.

I'm not sure lack of originality is a credit to a band. I realize everything has to come from something, but when a band looks backward so much they strain themselves, it makes me want to listen to the original. Why not just get the Jody Watley or the Appolonia (though I prefer Vanity) and skip the knock-offs?

To Anise:

Also, Lamb was the name of her dog that died, and in the song PLATINUM BLONDE LIFE, from the Rock Steady album:

"And where did my lamb go?
I wish she could stay
I feel as empty as a widow
I'm gonna sleep it all away"

So she named her clothing line, and CD after her doggie.

Well, Ross & Vinnie, Weezer's "Dope Nose" sounds suspiciously like Free's "All Right Now," so maybe what goes around comes around?

I love the new album! After listening to Bubble Pop Electric I remembered why Andre 3000 is such a genius. Who knew you could make a techno 80's dancehall/50's sock hop pop tune? I also like "serious", and the salt n peppa sounding "Crash". I think all of the haters will realize how wrong they are just like they were when Outkast released their last album. You don't realize that the music isn't chessy because it's poorly written, it's chessy because it was well written. It's nice to finally have a pop star post Madonna that is really herself and takes huge chances just for the sake of exploring her creativity. I love my Britney, but she never really pushed much musically (minus "Toxic" and "Slave 4 u"). I love that Gwen is trying to mix up the pop/hip hop scene. God knows we don't need another song like "Lean Back", doing a duet with Nelly should be punishable by firing squad, and Lil John Should never be allowed to speak again, ever. Even if you hate the music at least be open minded enough to realize that it is a move towards something better.

I haven't downloaded the album yet 'cuz I want to have it for my birthday, but as a devoted Gwen fan I still have those impulsive/compulsive attacks of dowloading the songs and then erasing them halfway through. It all started after I downloaded the 5-second clips from greenerpastures.com, and then I got anxiously moved into hearing previews and desperately trying to listen to them!!!!.....But from what I heard and read (lyrically speaking), the album is just aimed to be a shallow and silly pop album or how Gwen tags it, a ''guilty pleasure record''. The songs are pure Lisa Lisa/Sheena Easton/Club Nouveau/Missing Persons 80's dance-pop.....but even though the kitsch feeling of the album is inflicted all throughout, at the end it sounds more like a pot-pourri of styles with an 80's topping, than just a collection of pure new wave-nostalgic pseudo-gems. However something this songs have in common apart from a retro glossing is that they're briliantly dim-witted (if you can interpret what that means), and seem to be one of the most effective exercises on superficiality that have been crafted on the past 2 years (aproximately speaking). Again the idea of using many producers from different backgrounds is just delicious and as exquisitely heterogenous as the bizarre album cover....Of course some tracks seem out of place, such as the Dre-producer Eve-duetted dancehall-styled mock at Fiddler On The Roof ''Rich Girl'' (but the used-to-death chorus is so irresistible that we quickly forget that)....and fortunately all the tracks, sounding in or out of place, manage to succesfully form the chemistry of different styles in the album....Some songs sound very common and could easily fit in any late No Doubt album (the sweetly-breezy nostalgic Cool) and some are willfully weird (Bubble Pop Electric is pure Grease-bathed-in-electroclash). The lyrics are honestly dissapointing, there's anything from ''this shit is B-A-N-A-N-A-S'' to a cliche and corny reference to ''hydrophonic love''..........but they fit the melodies so well that we end up forgiving Gwen for them........
Well as a final word, L.A.M.B, from the little I've heard, isn't anything out of this world or a sublimely strange effort, but just a simple pack of hedonistic, bubbly (in the best sense of the word) pop, which outnumbers many of chewing gum's top artists failed takes on doing deep albums........:)

Anyone know who did the artwork for her love, angel, music, baby album cover. I quite like it and wouldn't mind finding a poster?
