Black Francis Covers Love & Rockets (Stereogum Premiere)

thubmnail icon: Black Francis Covers Love & Rockets (Stereogum Premiere)

Looking at the darker, gothier fare popping up via such current buzzed bands as Dum Dum Girls, Blank Dogs, and Crocodiles and groups like A Place To Bury Strangers, etc., it's fitting the glammy, briefly reunited post-Bauhaus trio Love & Rockets are about to receive an official tribute album. The 18-track New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love and Rockets includes a varied cast that includes the aforementioned APTBS along with the Flaming Lips, Monster Magnet, the Dandy Warhols, Puscifer, Better Than Ezra, and Snowden. The collection opens with a cover of Express's "All In My Mind" by Black Francis, a man most definitely familiar with tributes. He gives the dreamy, soft-focus 1986 tune a soulful preacher-rock urgency. (Who'll be the first to give us the "Where Is My Mind?"/"All In My Mind" mashup?) Even if you prefer the original, he definitely tears into his take.

The tracklist:
01 Black Francis - "All in My Mind"
02 Puscifer - "Holiday on the Moon"

03 War Tapes - "Love Me"

04 Blaqk Audio - "No New Tale to Tell"

05 Dubfire - "I Feel Speed"
06 The Dandy Warhols - "Inside the Outside"

07 The Flaming Lips - "Kundalini Express"
08 Sweethead - "Life in Laralay"

09 Film School - "An American Dream"

10 A Place to Bury Strangers - "The Light"

11 Monster Magnet vs Adrian Young - "Mirror People"

12 The Stone Foxes - "Fever"

13 Frankenstein 3000 - "No Big Deal"

14 VEX - "It Could Be Sunshine"

15 Better Than Ezra - "So Alive"

16 Chantal Claret vs Adrian Young - "Lazy"

17 Ian Moore - "Sweet F.A."

18 Snowden - "No Words No More"

New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love and Rockets is out digitally 7/28 and physically 8/18 via Justice. You can hear samples at loveandrocketstribute.com and the official MySpace. On 7/29 at Space 15 Twenty in Los Angeles there's also an official Love and Rockets Tribute show with VEX, the Invisible Humans, Astra Heights, and DJ Shepard Fairey.

On the one hand it's terrible, on the other hand he's asking me not to be unkind. And there's that whole thing my mom said about if I didn't have anything nice to say... I'm a little conflicted.
