Blender's Top 28 Most Recognizable Guitars

Fun idea for a list, rattling off the most iconic axes of all time. Synergistic timing, too, since today we're giving away a purty Les Paul Studio. At only 28 deep, chances are Blender's list missed your favorite guitarist's piece, but don't worry it's not like the National are at #1 or anything.

28 Buck Owens - Red, White, and Blue acoustic
27 Les Claypool (Primus) - The Rainbow Bass
26 Michael Angelo Batio - The Reverse Double Neck
25 Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) - Dan Armstrong/Ampeg ARMG-2
24 Michael Anthony (Van Halen) - Jack Daniel's Bass
23 Angus Young (AC/DC) - Gibson SG
22 Ace Frehley (KISS) - Laser Guitar
21 Albert King - Gibson Flying V
20 Zakk Wylde (Ozzy, Black Label Society) - The Grail
19 Jerry Only (The Misfits) - The Devastator
18 Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) - Blue
17 Bootsy Collins - Space Bass
16 "Dimebag" Darrell (Pantera) - The Dean From Hell
15 Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick) - Hamer Five-Neck
14 Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) - Fender Mustang
13 ZZ Top - Dean Spinning Fur Guitar/Bass
12 Gene Simmons (KISS) - Axe Bass
11 Eric Clapton - Blackle
Top ten after you hammer-on that mouse key.

10 B.B. King - Lucille
09 Jack White - 1964 J.B. Hutto Montgomery Airline
08 Bo Diddley - The Big B
07 Willie Nelson - Trigger
06 Prince - Purple Glyph Symbol Guitar
05 Paul McCartney - Hofner Violin Bass
04 Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) - Gibson SG Double Neck
03 Elvis Presley - Martin D-28 Acoustic
02 Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen) - Frankenstrat
01 Jimi Hendrix - Fender Stratocaster
Head to Blender.com for some guitar detail and YouTube of each axe in action. What are they missing? Well since you asked, we're miffed there's no Slash + Les Paul listing. We'd even settle for a Slash + Guitar Hero controller mention, really. Have they not seen this? Or this?

And we're assuming they haven't seen this creepfest.

09 Jack White - 1964 J.B. Hutto Montgomery Airline

Ol'Jack better thank Jack Yarber for purchasing that guitar for a mere $125 - while Jack W. was recording White Blood Cells in Memphis...

They also missed Michael Schenker's black and white Dean Flying V, Paul Gilbert's Ibanez with stick-on f-holes, and Steve Vai's Ibanez 7-string Universe model. I may also add to that Chrissie Hynde and her various Fender Telecasters as well as other prominent Teles like Andy Summers' and Joe Strummer's (which just also recently got the Fender Custom Shop treatment available to anyone with about $1,400 to spare).

Robbie Robertson's bronzed Tele from THE LAST WALTZ?

Randy Rhoades's polka-dotted Flying V?

James Burton's pink paisley Telecaster, from the '68 comeback special?

Steve Vai's JEM 777, with the handle?

Les Paul's... well, Les Paul?

Brain May's one-of-a-kind, handbuilt "Big Red," for Chrsit's sake?

Seriously, fuck a Blender.

A few omissions:
Michel Schenker - black and white Dean Flying V
Steve Vai - Ibanez Universe 7-string
Paul Gilbert - Ibanez PG with stick-on f-holes
Chrissie Hynde - Fender Telecaster
Andy Summers - Fender Telecaster
Joe Strummer - Fender Telecaster (recently got the Fender Custom Shop treatment--you too can have it for less than $1,400)

Prince should really be #1, especially after the Superbowl.

The Strat as #1 is kind of a strange choice, methinks...

Not because Jimi didn't rule it or anything, but it's kind of common, even before him. If a Strat was going to be #1, it really should have been S.R.V.'s. At least that one was customized.

B.B.'s Lucille, Willie's Trigger, Even John Lennon's Epiphone Casino seem slightly more defining to me.

But I'm kind of glad that Noel Gallager's Epi "Union Jack" wasn't listed. That guy is a wanker for realz.

I'm so glad that there is an absolute wave of people before me thinking that it's fucking retarded that SRV's Strat isn't on there. It's certainly a hell of a lot more recognizable than most of those guitars up there. Not that it matters, because this is a stupid list anyway. Next up- lists of the best/worst lists!

George Harrison's 12 String Rickenbacker, George's Rosewood Tele, George's 6119 Gretsch...

Lennon's J160E

Clapton's Painted SG

Elvis is more famous with a D-18 as that is what he played in the early days.

I think McCartney's Hofner should be number one. Nobody else plays those and if they do it is in direct homage.

The problem with this list is they imply the type of guitar in some cases. Hendrix never regularly played the same strat so it is pointless to identify him with a certain guitar.

Cobain is more known for the mosrite style guitar than the Mustang. Or even his signature Jagstang.

How can they pick a specific custom guitar for almost every guitarist and then just pick one of the (if not THE) most common guitar models ever. Why not the Monterrey Pop Strat or some custom Jimi guitar that is actually recognizable?

AND THEN to continue this clusterfuck, can we have people commenting on what irrelevant list's listing isn't on said list?

Because you know, this would be a funny idea.

Ermmmmm, I know I'll probably get a few confused looks, but Rory Gallagher was an infinitely better guitar player than Clapton and SRV (sorry, you're going to have to take my word on this - anyone who doesn't believe me will have to find out for themselves) and his guitar isn't on the list. For shame. His '61 Strat is one of the centrepieces of a touring guitar exhibition for crying out loud.
I'd also agree with Peter Buck's custom Rickenbacker with the holograms of the ladies on it. I've eaten meals (in an eatery called Captain America's) under a signed one of his Rickenbackers on numerous occasions. AND, as if that wasn't enough, directly underneath THAT guitar is a signed Angus Young model SG. Slurrrrrrp.
