Bloc Party Fan Attacks Brendan Urie

TMZ.com reports:

Panic! At The Disco frontman Brendan Urie was hit by a bottle seconds into his band's set on the Main Stage at the Carling Weekend: Reading Festival this afternoon. While beginning their opening song, the singer was struck in the face by the projectile thrown from the crowd. Urie immediately collapsed on the stage floor, forcing the group to stop playing. The singer was then surrounded by his band mates and roadies for several minutes before he managed to get back to his feet.

Folks who attend the Reading Festival take a certain personal pride in the stature in which the Festival has obtained. Over the years they have established an infamous reputation for being brutally unforgiving when it comes to bands they believe lack in the credibility to play their stage.

Well, I assume it was a Bloc Party fan. I mean, who doesn't like Bloc Party!

UPDATE 8 PM EST: Brendan talks to NME.com about the bottling:

"I'm doing alright now, I could be way worse, I could be dead. What I remember is I got hit, got knocked out, woke up and finished the set! I was out for a couple of seconds, I guess. Then we played some music, it was good. I've got a bruise, but looks good. It makes me look rugged and tough. When I got back up with just got on with ... I guess we were sending a message to whoever threw the bottle, you can't stop us!"
The song Panic were playing when Urie got hit: "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage."

i just read this over at nme. unruly fans are definitely no-nos but... OK, this may sound stupid but i'm just really curious, was the water bottle empty or full? 'coz if it was empty and was enough for brendan to collapse on the floor, well then it just proves he's a total wuss... like their music.

That guy was an asshole for ruining the morale. If you're there to see Bloc Party and not PATD, then get the fuck out when Bloc Party leaves.

And it says bottle, not water bottle. I immediately assumed it was a beer bottle, which would fucking hurt if you were hit in the face with it. No matter how much they may suck, a performer shouldn't have to tolerate that bullshit.

For the record, it was a bottle of urine and it was slightly open, so that when it hit his face it splashed him with urine. I worked security that night. Some of the urine got in his mouth and his eyes. Apparently he was blinded temporarily. I guess swallowing urine isn't fun.

No one is giving them shit for making catchy songs, and in fact if their songs were catchy I probably wouldn't mind them. Unfortunately they're not catchy, just crappy.

And I think most people aren't being "elitest" [sic] but rather don't understand PATD's popularity when they just don't make music that's interesting, engaging, listenable, entertaining or otherwise deserving of popularity.

So violence against a band that you happen to not like is ok? Wow. If you don't like certain music nobody is forcing you to listen to it. Why is it that when a so-called "bad band" gets popular it becomes threatening to fans of so-called "good bands" ????????

Let's take it further extreme and just kill people onstage...why not? two words - Dimebag Darrell. I doubt any of you fools like Pantera, is it ok that he was killed onstage too?

I like to think of myself as a generally nice person, and I could never imagine trying to physically injure someone just because they're attempt at entertaining me wasn't very entertaining to me. That's just cruel. But if you're an evil hearted person who doesn't give a shit about your actions, then I that's an issue you'll end up having to deal with when you're in hell. :D Good luck with that.

it reminds me of the time i saw the Smashing Pumpkins in Houston,TX and Billy got pleted with a shoe, and the first thing out of his mouth was, "anybody else throw anything else up here and we are leaving!'

so

of course the next thing to happen was the stage got pelted with shoes by the entire audience (not good to try to test texans as they will call your bluff).

he hasn't played in houston since to my knowdledge (well, i take that back as i think Zwan made a swing through, but do they really count?)

another question to ask on this same subject is how a band with players from Tortise and Slint (Zwan) could be in a band that sounded so lame?

Bottling and such at Reading is indeed something of a tradition. The Rasmus were bottled a couple of years ago, they left halfway through the first song iirc. Daphne and Celeste didn't last long either, and they went mental on stage and started screaming at the audience, which appeared to make the audience hate them even more. Then there's 50 Cent....

Sometimes it can be funny. Fellow Brits will be familiar with the TV bloke Vernon Kay. At The V Festival a couple of years ago, when he was doing a TV piece to camera with his back to the crowd, someone hit him on the back of the head with a well-thrown pie.

And I don't know whether to be proud of this or not, but i hit an All American Reject in the face with a (soft, flexible nylon) frisbee, so I'm hardly one able to condemn.

My Chemical Romance have been subjected to a heavy bottling while performing on stage at the Carling Weekend: Reading Festival today (August 27).

The band were pelted repeatedly by the audience throughout their set on the main stage.

However while the group tried to battle through and continue their performance, the constant shelling clearly upset frontman Gerard Way.

After sarcastically asking for the crowd to boo and hiss, the singer declared: "We might be outsiders today, but we represent every outsider out there".

He then introduced a track saying, "This song is called thanks for all the bottles, thanks for all the piss, thanks for all the golf balls, thanks for all the apples and thanks for all the sticky shit."

The singer did briefly get the whole crowd on his side, when in response to a recent article that suggested emo promoted self-harm, he got the audience to chant "Fuck the Daily Mail" three times.

The Carling Weekend: Reading Festival now winds up with Pearl Jam headlining on the main stage.

To review coverage from this year's event, including pictures and blogs go to NME.COM/festivals now.

Meanwhile for the ultimate review of the Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals get next week's issue of NME on newsstands nationwide from August 30.

The only difference between Panic! At The Disco and every other opening act is that every other opening act is probably better than Panic! At The Disco. The only similarity is that they, too, will be booed off the stage.

Which is kinda strange if you ask me. If you pay money to get four hours of entertainment, boo off the first hour's band, and maybe the second hour's too, the headliner's still only going to play two hours. Even if you think the openers suck it, and indeed they may mightily suck it, you get nothing out of being rude to them. Quiet indifference says just as much, and for the drinkers out there, it gives you some extra time to get properly pissed.

Now, I take back all these rebuttals if someone promises to batter the schmuck in the back of the room shouting "Play Freebird!"

But most of all, you represent worthless mall goths who write shitty poetry, shop regularly at Hot Topic, and don't tell their parents that they're gay. People like that choose to be outsiders. They're not real outsiders because they're all homogenous. If they were true outsiders, My Chemical Romance wouldn't have a fanbase.

From what I saw, it's been blown well out of proportion. They were only off stage for a minute or two, so it seemed. Wasn't really paying attention, or looking at what was going on, but I didn't even know he'd been hit until I got home. Total non event.

Bloody good shot though - it was a fair way from even the barrier to the stage, never mind being as far back as it probably came from.

i think its retarded who ever threw that stupid bottle because if you didnt like them then why did you go to the concert anyway who ever did it probably did it for attention which makes them immature and they need to get a life and grow up and for all you people who dont like theyre music then dont listen to it. and theyve made it farther than you in theyre music courier so every body who is complaining shut up cuz i think theyre awesome.

Dude...

What kind of a fucking moron throws a BOTTLE? Of anything... I mean, I like Panic!, but God, if you REALLY want to do some harm because you actually hate them that much, throw something worthwhile, ass. C'mon.

And they don't SUCK, alright? They're just average. And let's face it, guys--when was the last time YOU got a record deal? That's what I thought--never. Jealousy is NOT a good look, 'kay? Try something else.

And you're complaining about them not being My Chemical Romance or The Used or whatever? Guys, c'mon: evry single band sounds EXACTLY THE SAME. Tell me a chord no band has EVER used before, and maybe I'll think about your point of view. 'Til then, GET OVER IT.
