Bob Dylan Loved In UK, Banned In Canada

According to NME HMV, which is like the British version of the Virgin Megastore in Canada, has pulled all Bob Dylan CDs from its shelves in reaction to his deal with Starbucks, where his new CD Live At Gaslight 1962 will be sold exlcusively in coffee shops, alongside the likes of Alanis Morisette and Antigone Rising. I wonder if HMV informed the cultural institution of their decision via telegram...

Meanwhile, in England, whose Queen appears on Canadian money, The Guardian hearts Mr. Zimmerman more than ever.

This posting-every-five-minutes thing is good, but it's also a little dizzying. I can't not look at Stereogum for a day or I'm fucked for free mp3s.

Yo guy, HMV Superstore 333 Yonge Street, Toronto is the place to be.

Of course, if you can't get those CDs at that HMV location because they're banned there, you could always go to Sunrise Records, which is RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET!!!

actually, it stands for his master's voice...

they did the same thing up here when the rolling stones released something exclusively through best buy. even though they're the largest music chain in canada, pulling stock has no impact on the labels, yet they keep doing it for some reason...

"Banned in Canada" is an overstatement, since HMV isn't the only retailer in Canada.

At least this hasn't yet been called censorship. I'm sure some will. Always happens.

Isn't all this shit just a little much? Can't we all be grown up anymore and realize that if Bob Dylan, or his label, want to do something like sell his record at a national coffee shop, that it is not grounds (no pun intended) for retailers to go and remove his albums from their shelves? For Christ sake the guy is the poet laureate of our age. He has penned some of the greatest material I have ever heard. It strikes me as quite funny the selective morality of these chain store retailers. Especially since their bread and butter are artists like Brittney Spears and Slipknot. If they sold this record at a baby blender store I'd still buy it. When it comes down to it all this ranting about Starbucks is a little misguided in my opinion. Okay, so the place is a bit overexposed (that is an understatement if you live in NYC), but the fact is that they have kinder labor policies with their growers and with their staff than say your Maxwellhouse or Folgers. But I know uninformed ranting and raving is more en Vogue than yoga so go ahead and rant. I'll be sipping my grande latte listening to Bob.

Actually both HMV and Virgin Megastores are British owned and both have stores throughout the UK.

DOES ANYBODY UNDERSTAND WHY IN HEAVEN'S NAME WOULD A RECORD STORE WANT TO BAN THE MUSIC OF THE GREATEST SINGER/SONGWRITER KNOWN TO THE MODERN WORLD (hmv) SHOULD BE BOYCOTTED
BUT FROM THE WORDS OF THE GREAT ONE " WHEN YOU AIN'T GOT NOTHIN',YOU GOT NOTHING TO LOSE."
