Bob Knows Baseball

To know Bob Dylan is to know the national pastime. At least that's the premise of an article at MLB.com (via RS), which looks into the depths of Dylan's lyrical schemes to find that, after all these years, he's going on about switch-hitters and third basemen. We applaud all attempts at Dylanology, but the piece has more stretches than a seventh inning at Fenway (that's a baseball reference, sports fans). Try this one:

"Rainy Day Women #12 and 35." The refrain "Everybody must get stoned" could easily be Dylan commenting on allegations of widespread amphetamine use in the game. That's all been taken care of now, we hasten to add.
Ahh, they're being cheeky. But we'll give 'em "Going, Going, Gone." And remember that tour of minor league stadiums Bob did a few years ago? Now it all makes sense!

A few years ago? I saw Dylan in a small stadium just this past August.

It was excellent. Dylan still has it.

One of the themes for his radio show was "baseball", so yeah, he's probably a fan. But to put it in more than a couple songs of his..i don't buy it.

With that logic any one thing could easily be related to something completely different. Some people try too hard.
