Bonnaroo 2009 Line-Up: Phish, Springsteen, And More Phish

thubmnail icon: Bonnaroo 2009 Line-Up: Phish, Springsteen, And More Phish

As rumored late last year, Phish and the Boss will be headlining Bonnaroo 2009. It'll be the legendary jam band's first time at the festival and they'll be making up for lost time by playing two nights. Bruce Springsteen will be joined by his E Street Band, like last night but without the football references. It'll be both acts' only festival appearance this year. Roo's eclectic roster also promises sets from the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, NIN, YYYs, Erykah Badu, Al Green, David Byrne, Wilco, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, and TV On the Radio, who just leaked the entire line-up on their MySpace. I respectfully disagree with everyone above- I think that Bonnaroo has better headliners without a doubt, but I prefer Coachella's lineup top to bottom- but suffice it to say, neither is a slouch. And also, I'm in Jersey and poor, so I'm not going to either one, anyway.

Everyone knows that Springsteen is the late add to Coachella, right? With that in mind, this lineup doesn't even come close to Coachella.

Two nights of Phish cancel out one night of Springsteen. My Bloody Valentine and Springsteen on the same night - much less, in the desert - that is legendary.

Oh yeah...Animal Collective sucks.

Weird, just looking at the first 11 headliners, this festival could have happened anytime in the last 15 years (almost 30! if you take the first 9! ) ...except for Wilco, of course.

It looks a lot like a mid 90s Hullabalooza lineup at first glance.

Average Coachella: Pretending to act superior to another festival's clearly great lineup out of some false sense of superiority (developed from the perpetual sense of inferiority west coast hipsters feel to New Yorkers and Europeans).

Average Bonnaroo Ticket Holder: Doing back flips and acting like their the kid who found the golden ticket.

I dunno, i feel like festivals kind of ruin one of the most important ideas of indie rock: music played to a few dedicated fans in a small venue. Festivals suck I saw the Fleet Foxes in a small venue (Local 506 in Chapel Hill) and i promise no festival could top that.

On first glance, I've gotta give this to Bonnaroo over Coachella, and I'm one of those "average Coachella goers." I've been to the last 4 coachellas, but this 'roo has Bruce, and a better undercard (to me).

I mean, there's a good chance there will be big time adds to Coachella like Prince last year, but not a good chance one of those adds will be Bruce.

We'll see which, if either, I end up going to. But either way, I'm sad how good this lineup is.

Andy -- that's true, but remember in 2007, Coachella had the Rage reunion. In its press release, they were very explicit that it was a one-off show, that Rage had no other planned dates.

They went on to do Rock The Bells and a full tour.

So I don't expect Bruce to be added to Coachella - Coachella likes to have unique headliners - but just because the press release said so, don't make it the case.

I broke down the two lineups, and in the end, I like Coachella's better now. Not worth explaining here, but I wrote it up in my blog.

Coachella:
Macca + Moz + Leonard Cohen all on the same night
The Cure + My Bloody Valentine + YYY's all on the same night
Potentially disastrous/hilarious sets by Amy Winehouse and the Brian Jonestown Massacre
Metal, hardcore and punk (Mastadon, Genghis Tron, Henry Rollins, No Age, Fucked Up, Vivian Girls, Liars, Gaslight Anthem)
More exclusive acts (Fleet Foxes, Throbbing Gristle, Paul Weller, X, Rollings, Public Enemy, Antony)

vs.

Bonnaroo:
Springsteen (Already doing a full US tour)
NIN who've toured the US a handful of times in the past year
Phish and the Beasties = Not interesting to me
MGMT, Santogold, St. Vincent= Coachella leftovers
Boring indie folk artists and jam bands
Barely any punk, hardcore and metal (Coheed and Cambria? LOL)
Shares most of its interesting bigger acts with Coachella (YYYs, TVOTR, Band of Horses, Girl Talk)

Throw in cleaner showers and cleaner people and I'd rather be off to Indio than Tennessee.

The only thing I give Bonnaroo is Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear. Everything else about the festival is a bore to my personal tastes.

The Boss would be cool, but Phish is quite possibly the worst big-name band in the history of American popular music, NIN and the Beasties haven't been good for 15 years and Snoop is nothing without Dre. Compared to last years Lolla headliners -- or other Bonnaroo headliners from the past -- this is pretty weak. Where's MMJ? Or the Flaming Lips? Or any remotely interesting hip-hop artists?

Phish will play two shows - a full two-set performance as well as an additional late-evening set - at the 2009 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

Maybe the Phish phans will be exposed to some better music.
Phish is just so painful...
The guitar tone with the leads that go on and on on on...
So bad.

Phish's music has ruined a lot of parties in the past. Just crushing the sweet vibe. With their fingernail on the chalk board sound.

Hopefully they don't ruin this one.

I'm going to be honest and say i listened to those bands like 10-15 years ago but they aren't relevant at all...

p.s. as a big hip-hop listener we are given
Snoop Dogg, People Under the Stairs, The Knux and i guess citizen cope kinda half sing half raps...

like seriously that is such a shit hip hop section, snoop started being embarassingly irrelevant about 5-10 years ago, PUTS are underground legends i suppose but their rhymes suck and they put on a bad live set, The Knux i don't even have to explain why they suck

like fuck, shoulda got cooler rappers like lil wayne, atmosphere, aesop rock, brother ali, clipse, the cool kids, busta rhymes, mickey factz, guarantee none of them will be busy during this time...

Comparing Coachella and Bonnaroo is like comparing apples and oranges. The only thing in common they've got are a few mid-tier indie acts.Other than that, they cater to two immensely demographics on the broader scale and are on opposite sides of the country. No sense arguing the point. Depends on what kinda music you like as a whole to tell you which is the better festival.

I don't see how you indie kids can be batshit crazy over a band like Animal Collective, yet in the same breath whine about the return of Phish. Phish and Animal Collective have more in common than they don't. Bad vocals? Check. Sprawling go-nowhere jams? Check. Basically, Animal Collective is the Phish of your generation.

Bonnaroo is for the URBN Outfitters crowd who just heard about Animal Collective last week. Nothing about its lineup is groundbreaking or unique. Its headliner-friendly but thats all.

Roo tends to sign on bands who we've grown tired of and don't even have a reason to show up this year (MGMT, NIN, Wilco, Santogold, last year Mastadon and Against Me! come to mind) At least the other festival has the right mind to bring on Mastadon this year because of their new album and had a lot of the other bands I just listed last year right before they broke or had new material. That's more worth it to me.

If they don't have any new tricks, don't bring 'em.

NIN's been touring nonstop for the past few years, he's put out a ton of content, and just got done with one of the most visually stunning live setups in concert history. He's one of the most dedicated and passionate musicians of today, and this show should bring that to light to a much larger crowd

There are a lot of bands here that i'd be interested in seeing.
i wish some of the smaller acts would group together and do a touring festival - or even just a long concert. If Bonnaroo could buck at&t and get 95% of the shows web-cast or available to watch after the festival was over it could become a history-maker. Right now it is somewhat of a history-maker, but also a bit too exclusive. If you don't have at least two days (and the money for tickets) to float around the middle of tennessee, you miss out on a lot of inspired performances.

Really? "Beautiful"... "Drop It Like Its Hot"..."Sensual Seduction"...all those songs did pretty well. And his album "Blue Carpet Treatment" from 2006 was very well received, even by the hipster elite.

> Bonnaroo is for the URBN Outfitters crowd who just heard about Animal Collective last week

Bonnaroo caters to an audience much bigger than the commenters on Stereogum. Forget the people who heard about AC last week, I'm willing to bet more than 50% of all bonnaroo attendees have NEVER heard of Animal Collective.

So here you have 1 commenter railing against an established, always-changing, always-interesting artist like Snoop, and then you have another commenter essentially saying that a up-and-coming band like Animal Collective is no longer that interesting.

It's silly season on the Stereogum comment board. If you can't look at this list of 75 bands and not get a little bit excited, then the problem isn't the selections, the problem is that you're jaded.

I'm dreaming of an acid trip that includes both phish and a late night animal collective set, or crystal castles if things turn on me

...If only fuck buttons were there for sunrise... keeping my fingers crossed for a late addition!

the musicologist

i've never seen so much complaining about one verses the other. are coachella and bonnaroo in a fight or something? stop taking yourselves all so god-damned serious, it's only music- it ain't gonna hurt you...

I agree w/ you, however I think if you thow a Good Ole Boy from TN in a room w/ a Coachella hipster, its not going to be the Good Ole Boy getting bitch slapped.

I'm still a little torn on which one to go too, I've been to Roo a couple times, loved every second of it but then again it is a Fucking Beatle. Not to metion when I saw Ghostland Observatory at Roo last year, I'm pretty sure my face melted off. Would love to see them again.

Never been before. Line up sounds great except for Bon Ivor. His voice is just not that great to me.

since when did this turn into a pissing match?????
who cares which is better? I would love to go to Coachella but i live in PA and i'm not gonna be able to make it. Bonnaroo is closer and i do like the line-up so i'm going to go.
Stop the whining about which is better and who is more ahead of the curve on getting bands. Nothing is more annoying than people whining about well my festival is better than yours.
