Bono Hearts Scissor Sisters

BBC talks to Scissor Sisters about their unusual gig at P.S.1 last week...

Ana Matronic says it was a pretty strange gig, as people were watching them from roofs and hanging out of windows and then it got even more bizarre when Bono turned up: "Right before we went on, as I was doing my makeup, in walks Bono. I was like - OK, let's chalk this up to another one of my incredibly surreal experiences this past year." "It really is sort of like the Pope walking in the room. The crowd parts and you hear this sort of high pitched, ahhh, ahhh. He does seem to not really walk but sort of hover." "He came up to me and said, 'Let me kiss the ring', and I was like, 'What? I should be saying that to you, fool'." And according to Ana, despite the fact that they are still trying to break America, Bono appreciated their unique brand of glam-dance: "He was really, really nice, and he said that it was nice to see real performers as so many people are doing pop by numbers these days, and he really enjoyed our show."

Don't tell Bono, but Scissor Sisters ARE NOT THAT SPECIAL. I sorta like "Laura," but I can't stand the Pink Floyd cover. I guess someone's gotta be this year's Junior Senior.

Bono has really lost his magic, and that isn't his wife he's standing next to is it.

Hmmmmmmmm.

Well, we all know he cheats a lot. Wonder if he's doing the Asian girl thing too like a lot of celeb men these days.

oh no, is the backlash is already underway?

i've been spinning their self-titled almost exclusively the past week, and it just keeps growing on me. i was a bit underwhelmed at first, but the disc's got great replay value.

just try and listen to "no tits on the radio" and sing the background falsetto refrain and keep a straight (no pun) face. it's impossible. the disc of chalk-full of great tunes. "lovers in the backseat" shoulda been a michael jackson song circa before he sucked.

what the hell is wrong with JR/SR? They are what they are. I listened to their disc last night for the first time in awhile and had fun listening to it.

They're certainly not like most of the shitty bands you like, Scott, but geez, lay off.

i followed a ryan adams link from your site last winter and found myself listening to the UK release of the scissor sisters.

It's a shame they got all that UK fame via "Comfortably Numb", because it blows compared to everything else on the disc, and doesn't sound shit like anything else they've ever done. Honestly I put that CD on and I am just the happiest person in the world. With the Junior Senior disc I knew it was sort of ephemeral and that I'd hate it within a few months (good call.) This CD? I've downloaded it "illegally," bought it off iTunes, and just got a physical copy a few days ago. It's fucking great. Best thing I've heard this year so far.

I think Scissor Sisters are extremely talented. I love every song on their CD for a different reason. They reference the past but combine it in new and exciting ways. Their lyrics are great. And it's also high time that an openly gay music group became a hit in America.

so there!

Ooooh! Snark attack, Stereogum. The Scissor Sisters are pretty good, IMHO. I have their CD and I like it quite a lot. True, Jr/Sr is very one-note, although they're great in small doses. I think SS have artistic merit, and if you really listen to the lyrics of "take your mama out", it's hilarious. I feel ya if you don't like the glam rock movement that seems to be coming back, but SS are pretty good artists in their genre.

Scott stereo has no taste, and is only trying to cover up his lateness in getting into music despite his cushy media job. Actually, it is all attempted posturing to make up for his unfortunate long island upbringing.

that said, scissor sisters suck.

*SOME* OF you American's really should try and open your ears and not judge the band on one cover version that you have maybe overheard somewhere. I am in the UK where the Album has been in the top 10 since January and now been at NUMBER ONE for over 4 weeks. No way are they 'this years 'Junior Senior' who came up with that little pigeonhole?

Give the guys a chance. The album really is fantastic. It took me 2 weeks to realise it!! (a good sign = longevity) But OMG - When it hits you, it HITS YOU BIGTIME. I've not been this passionate about anything since I was 13! (now 31).

Go on, give it a chance.

This album has to be the greatest thing to hit music in years! For far too long the music industry has been serving up the same formulaic dirge and to hear something so exciting and refreshing is a welcome relief! Admittedly at first listen it may sound "run of the mill" but once you listen to the lyrics and the melodies, you are quickly consumed by the Scissor Sisters overwhelming sense of fun and "joie de vivre!"

See them live and you are quickly caught up in the bands amazing zest for life and their love for what they are doing. As someone once said "take them seriously at your peril" for they are out to have fun, fun, fun.
This album is the elixir of life and my advice would be to go with it and run, run, run!
Enjoy this album and regain what life's about - living!

here here FilthyG :D scissor sisters are (sorry) NO WAY this years jnr snr, not that i dont like jnr snr its just that they are completely and utterly different

scissor sisters self titled album has been spinning in my cd player since the day it came out. each song has different qualities, moods, deep(sometimes) lyrics, and completely different feels. this is the first album in a long time that ive loved EVERY song on.

just please try not to judge them on one song, which wasnt their own material and they just wanted to make it their own (not copy pink floyd, covers arent supposed to sound the same otherwise there would be no point??). just listen to the whole package and im sure you wont be disappointed

the scissor sisters have brought something fresh to the music charts both in the uk and us. Its nice to have a change, it does the world good. All of you out there who slag off the scissor sisters should sit down in a quiet room and listen to the whole album, we might actually like it.

I have seen the scissor sisters support elton john and i'm seeing them again next week in Brighton (England) and can't wait.

For all of you out there that don't feel the same about the scissor sisters, you should stop slagging them off and spend your time doing more constructive things, instead of getting our (the fans) backs up.

I manage a music shop in the Village called Norman's Sound & Vision. I'm there in the evenings and weekends, and from what I see the Scissor Sisters CD is selling very well for us. That probably got my attention, which is why I'm going to see them at Irving Plaza on September 10, 2004. I'm very open minded, which is why I'm going to see for myself what the Scissor Sisters are all about. See ya at the show. - Eliot.

I'm in love with the Scissor Sisters!Their album is great apart from a couple of tracks.Since I get off on the music first I had no idea the lyrics were so gay-political-whatever else you guys mentioned.
In these days of satirical rock bands like The Darkness it IS refreshing to hear something genuine.
That Jake singing "Better Luck"...makes my heart skip a beat.
The last time I felt this way about someone's music was with Aqualung-Matt Hayles.

Like, the best concert I have EVER been to. I am totally addicted!

RE Bono - He's a good singer, U2 rock etc, but really, who cares???

Also, Purple Bat, Would love to go to see them on their US tour...But I'm not made of money...Grr. I really should be.

I'm sorry but i gave them a chance... and yeah... it's just sad. disco was never this bad. actually... music in general was never this bad. it's like a trainwreck... the terrible falsetto, resampled beats and remarkably bad style (even for seventies disco standards). anyone that is into them needs to take a few steps out of their deluded hipster bubble and see just how silly they are for supporting such untalented disco hacks.

Speaking as a "spastic" - I have to say I now understand what people say when they use it in a derogatory manner.

If you intend your opinion to make sense then you need to consider the words you use. It may be dull boring or "fukin menta" but if you type "like a spastic" you will sound "like a spastic".

I personally LIKE the fact that the Scissor Sisters annoyed the hell out of Pink Floyd fans. Corporate golf playing whores in my opinion.

SS. Just a band. Having fun. Music ..Fun... Who would have thought it.

And Jake is fun to party with. I know the guy who does alot of there mixes, and he does some kick ass work...KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK TEXX!
They have sounds that take me back to the 70's, and the 80's. THey are breaking ground on an entire new sound. AND THEY ARE SELLING! Lets see some of you other critics do that! If you think you can do better, Then PROOVE IT!
