Boo Hoo

Scissor Sisters' frontman Jake Shears gets fragile in the new Uncut:

"Earlier this year, David Gilmour told my manager that he wanted me to sing 'Comfortably Numb' with him at Radio City Music Hall for two shows. So of course I'm emotionally fragile and weeping - a mess. I was so over the moon because I can sing the hell out of that song - I've been singing it for the latter half of my life. So I was practising it and doing my vocal exercises to it, but the day before the gig they decided not to have any guests. They canned me. Bastards! It was one of the worst things you can do to anybody. I kind of hate him for it. It was like taking candy away from a kid. My mom was getting on a plane to come and see me."
Tough life there, Jakey.

Well, cut him some slack, 'cause we wouldn't love him if he wasn't a drama queen.

It's not like the late, great Syd blew him off, or even Roger Waters.. this was David Gilmore, the historiclly lamest part of Pink Floyd. Of course you're going to get hosed by dealing with the guy who brought the world such mundane, third rate classic-rock radio fodder crap as "The Division Bell." The guy from the Scissor Sisters should have hated him to begin with. Not that Comfortably Numb isn't a great song, though I think it generally stands that the earlier the Floyd album, the better...

Matt, you have no idea what you're talking about, do you? You'll note the Gilmour is given the primary songwriting credit on, among other things, "Comfortably Numb", "Run Like Hell", and "Wish You Were Here." Gilmour also sings better than either Barrett (RIP) or Waters. And that earlier-better "wisdom" is ridiculous; I think the people that made Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall two of the best selling albums of all time would disagree.

Nate,

The Wall is terribly overrated, though "Comfortably Numb" is a solid track. Dark Side of the Moon is a good album for after Floyd had already become an overblown arena-space rock band. It's a fallacy, though, to correlate album sales and quality - I'm sure there are any number of boy bands in the last decade whose albums were tremendous sellers, and whose quality is suspect. The idea that Gilmour was a better vocalist than Syd is downright laughable. I guess if you love classic rock radio and have a non-ironic moustache and trucker cap, David Gilmour is pretty cool, though.

Why does every damn hipster in the world think that The Wall is "sooooo over-rated," and then act like it's not a phenomenal album. Also, yes, David Gilmour is a better vocalist than Syd Barret. And tearing Gilmour down for sub-par later workings? Now that is lame. Maybe we should act like the Blue album and Pinkerton have no merit because what came later was Maladroit.

I'm not going to get into an internet argument, but to add to what the poster above said, if you want awful, look at the shit Waters has done since leaving Floyd. It makes "On the Turning Away" look like flat-out genius by comparison.
