Bouncing Round The 'Roo

Didja miss me? I tried to see as many Bonnaroo bands as possible. It's hard 'cause they all play at the same time. Fortunately I ran into my friend Stacey who lemme hitch a ride on her golf cart a few times. The "flash floods" heading to Manchester never materialized, and Sunday was the best day of the festival.

A proper recap with many photos is coming. In the meantime, here's who I saw:

Drive-By Truckers
Iron & Wine
Ozomatli
The 22-20s
Alison Krauss & Union Station
Benevento/Russo Duo Featuring Mike Gordon (and Gabi La La)
The Mars Volta
Joss Stone
Xavier Rudd
Trey Anastasio Featuring Bo Bice
Warren Haynes
Old Crow Medicine Show
Herbie Hancock & The Headhunters Featuring John Mayer
Kings Of Leon
O.A.R.
Rilo Kiley
Dave Matthews Band
The Black Crowes
Dr. Dog
Citizen Cope
Keren Ann
My Morning Jacket
The Word (Featuring Robert Randolph, John Medeski, and Mississippi All-Stars)
Modest Mouse
Donna The Buffalo
Earl Scruggs & Friends
Matisyahu
Thanks to Matthew Fluxblog for his superior guest-blogging while I was away. And thanks Teen People for the love.

We saw the Brazilian Girls and they were fab. Write up will be posted soon here: http://www.pastemagazine.com/action/article?article_id=1812 (or may already be posted by the time you read this...)

P.S. The song Bo sang with Trey? None other than Van Halen's "Panama." But for my money the better of Trey's two onstage guests was Hasidic reggae superstar Matisyahu. And no, I never ever thought Matis would be on the same stage as an American Idol.

I was also at Bonnaroo, it was a hell of a lot of fun. I thought the highlights (for my taste) were My Morning Jacket, Ozomatli, Ollabelle and John Prine, but so much cool stuff went on there.

Scott -
Sorry I didn't catch up with you at Bonnaroo. There was so much to do and so much to see. My personal faves were Rilo Kiley, Secret Machines, Jurassic 5, De La Soul (I've been wanting to see them since I was 15), Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine, and John Butler Trio.

I had such a great time and the rain wasn't too bad. It was nice to cool things down a bit.

Mrs. Blu and I saw Rilo Kiley perform at the House of Blues in Orlando the other week. I tell ya, all the guys in the crowd wanted to marry Jenny, and all the girls wanted to be Jenny.
Here's hoping their set at Bonnaroo went over well.

Don't worry Scott, I won't tell anyone that the title of this entry is a Phish reference.

what is wrong with a phish reference? many repugnant hipsters listened to phish in high school/college - even if it is cooler to deny it now. while their lyrics were average, musically they were superior to almost any band you can name. finally they had enough grace to bow out when they felt their music wasn't as good as it used to be - perhaps u2, rem, and a handful of other bands could take a lesson from them.

Just bustin' his chops. Nothing wrong with it. I actually liked early Phish- first two albums, for what it was- I don't think people realize that they were a lot more like Frank Zappa back then than anything else.

Bonnaroo was great... a lot of stinky hippies frolicking in the mud. The highlights for me were the My Morning Jacket set and the Mars Volta's 2am performance. Jim James and his Grizzly Adams-style rockin it on-stage with half a dozen larger than life puppets---amazing! Cedric of the Volta drank mug after mug of steaming magic mushroom tea for their 2 1/2 hour spectacle of salsa psychedelica. The Kings of Leon, Rilo Kiley, Iron & Wine, and Old Crow Medicine Show were awesome as well. Saul Williams was by far the best solo performance of the weekend... getting a few thousand white kids hollering "where's my niggas at?"!!!

oh...and Charlie Murphy recounting his Rick James days--priceless.
