I dont care what kind of music it was, I think physically attacking someone, especially while they're performing, is pretty shitty. I feel bad for him - if you dont like a band at a festival, shouldn't you just, uh, walk away and find something else to listen to? I dunno, just seems like good sense to me.

In another article (it may have been in NME..?) the band's guitarist mentions that Urie was out cold, and that when he (the guitarist) got to Urie's side, Urie was unresponsive for about about a minute. Ouch, that sounds pretty bad, actually. Now I _really_ feel bad for the guy.

ok, i do not have a 20/20 vision but he clearly did not get hit in the head. and just about when i was beginning to feel sorry for him (well, sort of) after i first heard of the news.
and ha! john, i also noticed how the guitarist (is that the ryan ross?) looked at him like it was nothing... i mean these guys are longtime friends, right? and in situations like that, instinct will have you rush to make sure he's fine, but he just stood there, stared at him for 7 secs or so as if nothing happened... BECAUSE IT REALLY WAS NOTHING!

I still maintain that attacking artists is incredibly dangerous. But I'll back these above responses: it looks, almost undeniably, that he gets hit on the side of his arm. If you dissect this videoclip, you can see the white flash of the bottle -- and also see a clearly-visible black gap (his shirt) between the white of the bottle and the white of his pasty-pale face.

Jesus, just because his music sucks doesn't mean it's a viable reason for him to be a victim of violence. Yes, it was violence, no matter how minor. And even if it did hit him in the arm, someone still threw shit at a band that everyone paid to see (whether they liked them or not).
That being said, the only thing i commend this person for is good aim. Remember the Ron Artest melee? Remember what started it? A fan with impeccable beer cup throwing abilities. Because I read large blocks of this site in one sitting I realized that today brings us not one, but two concert "shots." In the Hives video from the Hey Ya post Pelle gets nailed (in the face or shoulder I think) at the 2:34 mark. Of course, he's made of steel so he doesn't break stride and then gives the audience a little "bring it on."
And in old school concert violence news...I worked concessions at the first The Who "farewell" tour. The only break I got before they went on was during John Cougar's (no Mellencamp, I told you I was old) performance. The moment I went into the stadium to check out the show he got nailed in the head w/a glass beer bottle. He promptly left the stage, returned 10 minutes later w/a football helmet on, cussed out the bottler and challenged him to come up on stage for an ass-kicking and then launched into "Hurts So Good." A priceless memory for sure.

ok, it seems like only a couple of people who were actually THERE have posted here so i'll add to the list. I was probably about 10 to 20 feet behind whoever the camera person was.
I saw the bottle hit him and thought exactly the same thing, that it had hit his body. But about a minute after the end of this video, he staggered to his feet and carried on the set (after getting the cut clean up) and throughout the next 30 minutes the right side of his face grew redder and carried on swelling. By the end he could pretty much only see out of one eye (which, to be honest, probably wasn't helping his depth perception for bottle-dodging).
I'm not a die-hard fan of PATD, I can take or leave them, but it took guts to get back up in front of 40,000 or so people who are clearly willing to endanger your safety and their own.

In case you losers don't know, there are high-speed cameras behind the bands on stages so they can find out what happened in situations like these. As one of the few people who was apparently at Reading this year, it was clear to everyone that he'd been hit right over his right eye as when he continued through the set (good on him i'd say) he had a massive bloody swollen bruise on his face. Unless one of his entourage smacked in the face while he was down I guess we can all put 2+2 together and come to the conclusion that this is not some jfk style conspiracy and he actually did get hit in the face with the bottle. Seems pretty easy, and as for all those people who say he shouldn't be whinging when playing in a festival like reading, he didnt - in fact he joked about it and carried on for the rest of the set like nothing had happened. Oh, and if a plastic bottle dont hurt like glass i invite anyone around to mine to have one full of water chucked at their face- it is quite heavy and WILL hurt i promise. PS. Chill. It happened, it has happened before and it will happen again. That bottle was one of hundreds being thrown at the stage. It happened to hit him. I sincerely doubt whoever threw it was directly aiming to hit him in the face. They were also likely drunk as well.
However it did hit him. It probably hurt like bollocks and it probably did knock him out for a short while. He chose to play on which is brave. However, they will have been being paid a lot of money to perform there; reading is a huge festival and it is a big deal to be asked to play the main stage. Also, to the comments saying 'why did they bother to pay for the ticket anyway' reading is a festival, meaning a number of bands perform there over a few days. Panic had a slot on one day. Plenty of the people there liked them, but plenty didn't.
Don't waste your time obsessing over or defending a band that doesn't really care much about its younger fanbase. From what I have read they are trying to be taken seriously as a band (i.e. comparisons to Radiohead), and I doubt that being treated as this generation's N*Sync is going to do much for their image. Or that they will thank you for constant professions of undying love or comments about how hot they are.
Therefore kudos to him for playing on, but really this is not a life changing event for them or for you.
