Brian Jonestown Massacre

Last night at Mercury Lounge...

AUDIENCE GIRL: I miss Joel!
ANTON: Well, why don't you go to fuckin' Amoeba Records and visit him? And while you're there, buy a record so he doesn't get fired!
AUDIENCE GIRL: (whispering to friend) I love provoking him.

Pretty good show. I left early 'cause I was sleepy (and Anton had his back to me the entire show, except for that one Kodak moment above). BJM are playing again tonight if you wanna check 'em out. DIG! is still playing at Sunshine too.

Gotta love a band that gives away all its music for free.

Also, Mr. James Clasper reminds me:

Scott, Are you going to post a memorial to John Peel? He was the first mainstream DJ to play Pixies, the Ramones, the Fall, Joy Division, New Order, the Smiths, T-Rex, the White Stripes, and Radiohead. An unparalleled and utterly charming genius. Surely worthy of a Stereogum memorial.
Indeed. R.I.P. John. Some Peel Sessions for download...
  • The Fall
  • Sonic Youth
  • Ween
  • Beulah
More random tracks here. And his favorite record: Undertones - "Teenage Kicks"

Is the tambourine making a comeback, or did it already happen and I missed out? Sucks to hear about John Peel, I'll have to dig up my old hard drive with some sessions on it.

Here's the dilema: Do I go to see BJM on election night, or stay home and watch the results unfold?

BJM: Strung Out in Heaven is a great 1st album. Go to their website and listen to ALL their stuff for free. Great Band

Thanks. I listened to some today at work and enjoyed it. As an early 30-something with a kid and a second on the way, I need a little somesin-somesin to help keep me cool...

I saw BJM at the Mercury Lounge last year... fantastic show during which the singer (not too familiar w/the bandmembers' names) berated and cursed out the late-arriving guitarist the whole night, said guitarist marched off stage twice, and the lead singer ended the show by molesting a stuffed animal with his crotch.

    Good times!

John Peel's death is a very sad moment in music history. Here's a a man who didn't obey to playlists or any trendy style or band.He just did what he liked most: play other people music he thought it was good.
I still have a tape of peel sessions from one of those underground bands he was keen to play:Done Lying Down (does anyone remembers them?)

By the way, the relationship between the BJM and The Dandy Warhols became "Dig!" a rockumentary. For more details check out the November edition of Mojo magazine.

Did you catch The Dears set?? They were pretty great. And Apollo Sunshine's set was awesome until the keyboard died... which Jesse then proceeded to smash to bits, little plastic pieces flying everywhere.
I found the BJM set a little... well, all the songs were sounding too much like one big long same song. I like their recordings enough, but I just didn't get into the show.
I did, however, find all of the irksome hipsters who were critisizing the outfits of the audience members hilarious... I actually heard, "These people dress horribly! They must not be here for BJM."
