Brooklyn Target Opening

Gawker's got some great surreal photos. I've never understood what's so cool about Target (except the commercials), but my female coworkers tell me it is THE GREATEST PLACE IN THE WORLD.

Target is the new Wal-Mart.

I love Target. LOVE IT! That being said, if I walked into any Target and saw a bunch of annoying hipsters hanging out (like in those pictures). I would run far away and never look back. Oh and Target will suck much ass in New York City. Too many people. My advice, if you want to enjoy the wonderful world of Target, visit one someplace out in the suburbs. I give it a month before the Brooklyn Target is looking like a warzone.

I was there and it was fucking strange. First of all, I scammed an invite through work (i wanted discount shopping!) and shouldnt have rightfully been there. The strangest thing was getting wasted (bet your ass i was drinking, you had to to even get a grip on things down there)while shopping around a Target. The place was full of nasty hipstertants and C-list celebs (Although I did see Maggie as I walked in, shes cute). It was possibly the strangest event i've ever been to in my life. But fuck it - I got toothpaste and ice cube trays and deoderant and cat food for cheap!

damn, i can't believe i forgot about that "party" - 'uh yeah, your mother' is right, drinking beers while shopping sounds fucking awesome!

It's like when Wal*Mart introduced their website, people said, "Finally, you can shop Wal*Mart in your underwear!" which actually, most people have been doing anyway for years.

Target is SO not even close to Wal*Mart, sorry to dissapoint.

granted i'm from the land of Target (Minneapolis), but it's such a much higher quality (merchandise, and shopping experience wise) than either Wal-Mart or K-Mart, or really any other large retail chain, and i'm not just saying that because i live here, i felt that way back in Montana as well.

Wal-Mart = white trash chain
K-Mart = just above white-trash chain, old grandmas love it here
Target = for the rest of us

granted some stuff there is overpriced, but i've never feared going into a Target, like i have a Walmart or Kmart.

and i agree, that said, those photos are creepy.

Mixed feelings. The kinds of human rights abuses that have to be behind those sorts of low prices are bad. At the same time, it's cool that there's at least one store that says: Hey you don't make a lot of money, but you deserve something cooler looking than a Nascar t-shirt.

Posted by: janine at 07/21/04 2:58 PM | Reply

... though if you were a certain sort of hipster scum, a Nascar t-shirt would be the perfect thing to go with your overpriced, pre-worn-in jeans jeans and trucker hat.

Don't feel guilty. Target is known as the "upscale discounter" among people who study that kind of stuff for a living, but not everything there is cheap. Ever notice that most people leave with more than they came in for? (I know I always do.) Ever notice that stuff isn't where you'd expect it to be, i.e., the way it's organized is a little off? (Like most mouthwash is in one aisle, but then the kind you like is at the end of a completely unrelated aisle?) That's because they hire psychologists and marketing experts to tell them how to arrange stuff to maximize impulse buying. The "human rights violations" would have to be at the manufacturer level for most, if not all, of their merchandise. It's possible that Target sells at a loss on some items to lure people in to pay regular prices.

I don't know how much people make at Target, but there is a book called "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America"

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0805063897/qid=1090436845/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/103-6240705-2399034

which explores the fact that jobs at places like Wal-Mart really don't provide enough money to live on.

In the majority of the pictures, the sneakers have laces on them- they're just not tied up all the way to the top. Regarless, however, it's pointless to do that. Rappers don't even do that anymore. I wonder what he would look like wearing a pair of decent casual shoes. Maybe he doesn't know how to tie his shoe laces. It could be possible!

Damn, wrong post...my bad homies. I was speaking of Brit Brit's male specimen.

But what the hell, Target is better than K-Mart, in the sense that, there is much more variety and style alike. I like K-Mart as well as Target. Target is the only store that I know of that sells Gatorade at $1.95 a bottle. Love it.

karen, I meant the manufacturer level not target. (that sentence reads snarkily, but i mean no snark) When I think about it, there's probably no direct line between price and treatment of workers (at the manufatcuring level). My friend who designs clothes told me that the women who physically make couture get paid very badly.

I didn't think it was snarky. Anyway, I think the stuff we buy, whether it's high end couture or Target, is made by people who are treated poorly in other countries (and who knows, maybe even here!) more than we realize.

Watch out, though, when you post comments like this-- you might get called a "professional academic" or a "hipster," or "unemployed NYC liberal."

It's so true; Target does in fact OWN Minneapolis. It's everywhere.

Except for the University of Minnesota, which is a trademarked product of the Coca-Cola corporation. It's impossible to find Pepsi (or MOUNTAIN DEW) on campus.

I wondered for a long time why shopping in Target just "felt" different than shopping in other stores. Then it occurred to me that they pipe in no overhead music whatsoever. The only sounds you hear are those of other shoppers. It's like a huge, well lit morgue.

Don't worry too much about the shape of your Target, NYC... the Chicago ones I shop in are suprisingly neat. I recommend going when they open on a weekday morning, but I'm sure it'll still be H&M crazy for the first 3-4 months.

I dunno... the one in Queens is usually pretty picked-over when I go. And a mess compared to the ones where I used to live (Alexandria, VA and Concord, NH)

another thing that's pretty cool about Target, is they give a % of their profits (around $2million a week) to local charities, sure that's a tax right-off for the most part, but still.

they also donate $ to a lot of other great causes as well.

Which Target are you talking about in Chicago, Krissy? The one on Elston is a serious WT Target, complete with rats, and I saw a guy pinned to the ground by mall security types (to their credit he did resist arrest) up on Howard. Of course I shop there, mind you, but I am just saying its no day at Rivinia...

target is a horrible homogenized place like walmart, or any other place like that. also, the owner is a radical pro-life person who gives money to all the radical pro-life groups that do crazy shit. target is stupid.

Unfortunately, I was also in attendance last night. I only say it was unfortunate because I slipped in a puddle. But not just any puddle. It was dog urine. And it wasn't just any dog. It was the Target mascot dog. That's right. The same dog Chloe Sevigny is petting. I slipped in a puddle of Target dog pee. Too bad that's not on film.

totally false, get your facts straight.

they stopped giving to Planned Parenthood in 2001, that isn't exactly "giving to pro-life" groups now is it? and considering they gave to PP since 1977...

hey karen (previously from concord, nh). thats the target i go to since i'm only 25 minutes from that one (i'm in laconia).

anyway, when i lived in queens, new york...i'd drive all the way out to college point over the one just down queens blvd. that one is definitely picked over and crowded (even at their "slow times").

"The owner"?

Uh...

Target Corp is a public company, traded on the NYSE.

Also, the dry goods store that evolved into Target Corp. was founded by the grandfather of Mark Dayton, who's a Democratic senator from Minnesota.

Plus the film *Career Opportunities* took place in a Target...so it's got that going for it.

When I first saw that movie I thought Target was a fictional store. They didn't have any in Long Island until a few years ago.
