Bruce Springsteen On The Hold Steady

Stereogum reader Andy writes after The Hold Steady's "ridiculously good" show at London's Borderline on Friday night:

The guys were awesome, plowing through almost all of Boys and Girls... with wild sweaty abandon. Craig finished by telling us that whatever the differences between the english and our american cousins we all shared a potential for joy, before crashing into First Night, dragging people out of the audience and giving them their guitars to finish the song. It was stupendous. Anyway, we got talking to Franz after the show who told us that through Jesse Malin (who was a friend of theirs) Bruce Springsteen had got hold of a copy of Boys And Girls In America. Apparently The Boss dropped them an email a few days ago to say he was a fan of "Stuck Between Stations" and "First Night."
The Boss has taste! Those are our favorites, too. We figured he'd be into their sound 'cause he sorta invented it, but it's nice to hear he's a fan. As for Bruce's kinship with Jesse Malin, The Boss joins Ryan Adams, Josh Homme, and Jakob Dylan on Malin's forthcoming, third solo record Glitter In The Gutter. We'll get you a listen soon.

Wow, thats amazing. I also just read somewhere that Paul McCartney likes a couple Oasis songs, and that Andy Gibb has been known to nod his head to some Scissor Sisters.

Jesse's music is certainly not cool, but the dude is such a rock n' roller that it mostly makes up for it. That track with the Boss ("Broken Radio") is good, but I'm not convinced about majoirty of the new album. There was simply no need to do an update of "Since Your In Love" or record the piano version of "Bastards of Young" for this album. I still love seeing Jesse live though...even though he tells the same 4 stories every time.

I like the new alubm, but Jesse is such a nice guy in person, that I feel my opinion may be biased.
He was really nice to me at his bar Niagara, after this douchebag tried to pick a fight with me. Jesse had the guy thrown out, and bought me and my friends drinks.
I'm rooting for his album to be a big success.

"Stuck Between Stations" and "First Night"? C'mon, it's "You Can Make Him Like You" and "Southtown Girls"! Anyone, anyone?

Is it weird that when I listen to the Hold Steady I think more Thin Lizzy, and less Springsteen, but I guess Phil Lynott is dead so he can't tell everyone his favorite song. (FYI, It's "Massive Nights")

What is this, no love for "Citrus"?

this is unsurprising, since the one and only time I heard The Hold Steady, I instantly thought "this sounds like Bruce Springsteen". Which is not at all a bad thing.

Well, I'm completely convinced that Jesse's Glitter in the Gutter is the album of the year. Not to sound like a complete name-dropping wanker but having interviewd the man about the new version of Since You're In Love I can't listen to the older ones - and you'll make up your mind on the Replacements cover when you hear it live, believe me.

But yes, since he's on his third album and is such good mates with Ryan Adams (who you guys profess to love) while being a much more consistent storyteller I'm surprised this is the first mention I've seen of Malin on Stereogum. Please feel free to correct me.

And it's "Stuck Between Stations", "First Night" and "You Can Make Him Like You" for me, incidentally.

"Stuck Between Stations." Best album-opener all year.

Actually, I just talked to Jesse about this and the story is that Bruce already had the record and they just chatted about it while he was working on the track with him.

FWIW Jesse really likes "You Can Make Him Like You."

Thank you for saying that. I was starting to think I was the only one.
