Buy Your Favorite Band

The fine folks at Clear Channel have put together a handy list if you find yourself in the market for a band and mired in engagement-fee curiousity (via PopWatch). The sheet gives you prices and availability on everyone from 30 Seconds To Mars ($20K -- is $20K too much) to David Cross ($20-25K -- but mocking Jim Belushi is free!) to Death Cab ($75K -- Daddy Gibbard needs a new pair of glasses).

Not that we expect you to have an appreciation for the band-rental market, but based on relative expectations, who's a bargain -- and who's overpriced? (Hint: Hootie.) Lynyrd Skynyrd, James Brown, and Journey are among the most expensive, but leading the fray is Panic! At The Disco, with a single evening fee of $100-150K. Before you freak, know that for this tour they're building a house of mirrors (and borrowing the Crüe's tent!) in addition to their usual parade of face-painted theatrics. So it's a matter of overhead.

But still fucking ridiculous.

20k is kind of a steal for 30 Seconds to Mars.

Ben Kweller seems like a bargain to me.

Gavin Degraw has a price of "big money". I'm still checking to see if anybody is listed as "no whammy"

35-50K is pretty high for Macy Gray. Has she actually done anything since 1999?

I love David Cross and I'll come up with some bullshit rationale of "subverting Clear Channel's money towards anti-Clear Channel causes", but this kinda blows.

How is Lonestar 75k? Doesn't that seem a bit excessive for a minorly-successful pop-country band that faded out in the '90s?

Or am really that unfamiliar with pop-country?

I don't think they've updated that list since at least 2002.

Wow... Rilo Kiley at 15k? That's pretty good, compared to most of the other bands on there.... I'd spend 15 on Jenny alone. = p

Is it 150 K just for Huey Lewis, or do the news come with that price tag.

the news are obviously extra as I think you'd have to exhume a few of them.

They were pretty old when they were famous and that was what, 30 years ago?

most of these prices are inflated because this is for booking the artist at college. My college booked third eye blind for 50K and 20 people showed up. Student planning boards are not the brightest people for the most part.

Promoters and bands know that colleges (or student planning committees) have money to spend at concerts so they rip them off regularly.

I knew a guy that was booking indie bands for parties at a college for $100-500 (not K).

Better yet, work at a college radio station and just ask bands to play on the air. Free, personal concerts. I've seen John Vanderslice and Matt Pond PA from a few feet away with <5 people in the room.

yeah no shit Chris, the list has probably been around since people have been booking bands. but see, the availability for dates and the price (and the names of bands, like panic! at the disco) is where they UPDATE the list. it's a tough concept, but think about it, and then maybe you'll understand.

Fuck, back in 1988 we were blessed with "John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band" at college. Wasn't that shitty! Although, watching them storm off stage after some bottle rockets were shot at 'em made things better.

Um, how come no one is flipping out over the price of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, who seem to be listed twice and available for between $10 and $35K. Um, right.
