Capturing The Lonergans

From NY Times...

In "Open Water," a vacationing couple surfaces from a scuba dive to find their tour boat has vanished. Left for hours amid circling sharks, one of the divers finally vents his rage at having been abandoned. "Unbelievable!" he screams.

Actually, it's not. The movie is loosely based on a real event: the 1998 stranding of two Americans off Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The filmmakers, both New Yorkers, are divers themselves and learned of the incident from a scuba newsletter. They borrowed the premise of an abandoned couple, but fictionalized the rest, in part because the true story had too many twists to seem credible on screen...

There's a whole collection of "scary nature stories" (including the incredibly nightmarish Lonergan one) archived at Outside magazine. It makes for some fun but unsettling reading.

it's been hailed as "the blair witch of the sea" which is enough to keep me far away from the theatres. i was at the movies last night and saw the preview between my fingers but i am admittedly a wuss!

re: Blair Witch of the sea...

Yeah, I barely could watch the preview when they showed it at the theater. I get much more freaked out about psychological terror rather than chop-em-up gorefest. Open Water looks damn scary...

The diary entries were weird, though... it's a really weird story.

astralgirl, i had this discussion last night w/ my boyfriend and his friend re: scary movies. i think the "scariest" ones are the ones that leave you to imagine what could happen, like in "blair witch." i remember seeing it opening night @ angelika and thinking, "oh it's not so scary..." but during the subway ride home, we all discussed the film and the more i thought about it, the more freaked i got. the result was me having my then-boyfriend escort me to the bathroom every night for two weeks because the window overlooked a relatively wooded area for NYC.
