Casting Couch: Keith Moon

Golden Fiddle links to some casting news about an upcoming Keith Moon biopic. Apparently comedian Mike Myers has signed on to play the wild Who drummer. Pete Townshend has yet to complain about it on his blog, so that's a good sign, but I'm not convinced Myers is the right guy to fill Moon's vomit-covered shoes. Judging from his performance with Kanye on that Katrina benefit, he'd be better off playing a tree.

Speaking of upcoming movies about outrageous rockers ... Elijah Wood as Iggy Pop? Wood's iTunes Celebrity Playlist indicates he's a music geek, but you know DJ Frodo spent an entire weekend obsessing over whether it was cool enough.

I can see him pulling it off.

Meanwhile, NIN's drummer is back in the hospital. Tour's probably canceled.

I heard CYHSY turned it down first.

I could see him pulling it off, too... if I had no idea who Keith Moon was.

Forgive my totally lameness, and ridiculously off topic comment, but has anyone per chance came across an mp3 of the Youth Group cover of Alphaville's (cheesy 80's) 'Forever Young' featured at the end of last nights OC.

Given that Stereogum is kinda OC central I thought I'd chance my arm...

Sorry in advance.

i still think jason schwartzman would be a much better choice. he looks more like keith than mike and plays drums. there you go.

Johnny Fedevich should play the role. He'd be perfect.

Jason Schwartzman? Pffft! Such a lame actor, he could never pull it off. Especially the energy & the British accent.

Meyers is wrong too. Getting too old & doesn't look like Keith at all. Will they use fake eyebrows? lame.

I saw Phantom Planet opening for Elvis Costello in 2002. Jason Schwartzmann ended their set by standing on his drumstool, jumping straight up in the air and landing with the final drumbeat. It was great. I thought right then, if they ever make a Keith Moon biopic, they should cast him.

But Mike Myers as Moonie?! What a fucking disgrace.

i love how elijah hadn't heard gang of fucking four until entertainment was reissued. nice. james chance was a bit obvious as well. he should have just done a joint "desperate to establish indie cred" playlist w/ adam brody.

i dont see the whole problem with the adam brody-oc/indie thing. its not a sin to acknowledge music that we enjoy on such a big platform. the whole elitist thing is bullshit

Adrien Brody would be better. They kind of look alike, right? I don't think anyone will be able to suspend dibelief long enough to take Mike Myers seriously. I like him, but I don't see it.

whoever said schwartzmann is right on. i love mike myers but come on he's at least 15 years too old for the part. Moon was only like 17 when he joined The Who and he was a baby face. they better have some serious make up for myers to pull this off.

Jason Schwartzmann couldn't pull of the energy? Dear god, what are you on? That guy has the energy of a nuclear reactor nearing critical meltdown, and far from a "lame" actor, sheesh. He'd at least stand a much better bet of pulling off than---Myers? Sounds like they're going more for star power than legitimate portrayal.

Adrien Brody could not look less like Kieth Moon.

I actually look like him myself, a little, and I play drums. I should do this flick.

Oh, great. Moonie with a Scottish accent. That IS the only one Myers can do, right? It's the only one I've heard him do the last...oh...decade.

What about Shane West (he was in A Walk to Remember), playing Darby Crash from the Germs? I think this is even stranger.

Dear Roger Daltrey,
Please reconsider the decision to cast Mike Myers in the role of Moonie, and please go right to Jason Schwartzman's doorstep and beg him to take the part. Are you blind? Yes I know he's clever and charming and funny like Moonie was, but that doesn't mean he would portray him well! Please Please Please reconsider this. Thanks.
CA,
Studying Keith Moon since 1981.

I would say, quite honestly, that everyone knows Myers as a comedian/comic actor. He has been in some funny movies and some not so funny movies. You can discuss that till the cow jumps over the Moon. But, this type of a role, if he pulls it off, might just make the entertainment world and it's fans jump up and take notice and view him in a totally different light. Why not give him a chance?

Yes, Jason Schwartzman looks like Keith Moon and plays the drums. If this were a look-alike contest, he'd win.

This movie will require both comedic and dramatic acting - Mike Myers has both. He's arguably this generation's Peter Sellers. Look at all the funny characters he's created and played. Sellers did that. Moon did that. Myers does that. See any of the "Austin Powers" movies for the comedic side, and watch "Studio 54" for the dramatic side.

Schwartzman hasn't proven himself beyond some smaller, independent films like "Rushmore" or "Spun", which don't really prove he could act like Keith Moon. I like the choice of Myers and anticipate this role will change his career and surprise the movie-going public.

This biopic has "train wreck" written all over it. Daltrey has been flapping his pie hole for the last twenty five years about producing this film. It should have been made long before now. Keith was thirty one when he died, myers is FORTY THREE!!!! WHY cast somebody so old and so recognizeable from so many other roles??? So how is he going to play young Keith when he was in his teens!!! They need to cast a nobody in his twenties that can pull off playing a young Keith and then "age" him with make-up, DUH!!! As a Who fan for the last thirty five years I predict this will be a total cluster f**k!!!

I'm sorry to sound so BLUNT, but MIKE MYERS is tooo UGLY and OLD.
EVEN 2 minutes DEAD Keith Moon was 1000 time better looking than MIKE MYERS.
I will never see a movie about Keith Moon if Mike plays him.
It should be a unknown who can act and who can pull off the cuteness and passion of Keith. OTHERWISE forget making a movie about Keith Moon.
NO UGLY ACTORS CAN PLAY KEITH!

Just get it over with, a no-namer would be the best choice. Get a young, full of passion, doesn't give a shit young punk to play him. Hurry up & make the movie before you both hit the dirt. KIETH MOON'S STORY DESERVES TO BE HEARD, JUST MAKE THE FCKIN' MOVIE ALREADY. I DON'T NEED AN OSCAR PERFOMANCE!

Mike Myers should not be allowed to play Keith Moon.
Apart from his total absence of genuine acting skill and his total inability to do accents - he's just too old.
Also - it will be a "Mike Myers film" - when it should be a "Keith Moon film."
