Your MySplice III Covers

thumbnail: Your MySplice III Covers

Earlier this week we unveiled MySplice III, Stereogum & team9's annual original mashup compilation. We also requested an album cover and promised a prize to the best one. We got a lot! Thanks. You don't suck at Photoshop. We encourage you to grab the winning .jpg and tag your MP3s with it. Since we got so many great submissions, we're also gonna display a dozen alternatives in case you like one of those better. But obviously we are experts and made the right decision.

Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III

thumbnail: Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III

For the third year in a row, we've turned to master bootlegger team9 to take some of our favorite songs of the year and mash them together. On Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III you'll hear familiar blog hits from artists like Lykke Li, of Montreal, the Breeders, Bloc Party, Crystal Castles, and Beck remixed with beats and vocals borrowed from some of the year's most inescapable pop hits. (There are some oldies thrown in, too.)

As always with our original compilations, you may download all the tracks for free, as individual MP3s, ZIP or torrent. There is no better way to celebrate 2008 for no money.

One hitch: we need an album cover! You're creative, will you make one for us?

Indie Rock Kitty Needs A Home

Last time we saw Bon Iver, he was on the Lower East Side being interviewed by Andrew W.K. This time the magically voiced one -- when he's singing, not talking -- has been called in to help the Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguwar house cat find a new crib. The little dude's name's Dan Burton (after the front man for the Early Day Miners), and because of the label's locale, he should be adopted by someone in Central/Southern Indiana. Got it, Hoosiers? This from Lucy at Secretly/Jag HQ:

He's unbelievably sweet. He will let you hold his paws. All he wants is to sit on you and be cute. I have actually never met a cat this nice in my life. He needs a visit to the vet and the person will be subject to rigorous questioning by the staff of Jagjaguwar. He clearly has a lot of love to give.
Why give him up? Well the Jag folks are allergic. Plus, "It's also hard to work on Bon Iver and Besnard Lakes press with a kitty jumping on your keyboard." Also they described Dan as a "total chill factory." Send serious inquiries only to lucy@jagjaguwar.com. In the meantime, a less serious inquiry: How about you put your PhotoShop to use and make some prize-winning LOLCats out of Bon and Dan? Just don't turn Pete Doherty on us. We like Dan too much for that. We'll post the best ones, so send 'em in to tips at stereogum dot com. Purrrty please.

Lest you aren't hip to the excellence that is Bon Iver:

Bon Iver - "Skinny Love" (MP3)

Meanwhile, Bon Iver's heading out on a tour -- he won't be traveling with kitty (sorry!), but he will be with BTW Elvis Perkins. Check dates after the jump.

Your LolZeitgeist Winner

Thanks guys for submitting your Smashing Pumpkins lolcats iconography! A lot of your submissions were similar -- nearly identical, really -- which is to be expected (impact font and Corgan's cue ball only leave so much room for artistic latitude). But one entry stood out from the pack. It had that extra je ne sais quoi -- and so we have our winner, waiting for you after the jump.

Stereogum's Lolzeitgeist Photo Contest

For those of you who haven't heard the story yet, last week some overzealous fans broke into the studio where the Smashing Pumpkins were recording and stole some of what is believed to be the album art for Zeitgeist. The photos were then leaked to Netphoria, a Pumpkins fansite, but Corgan and Co. were not happy, management got involved, and the perps soon found themselves in jail. The photos were also deleted, but not before some intrepid fans were able to describe them for posterity (via P4K):

  • Paris Hilton posing in front of a backdrop of a bomb exploding
  • The Grim Reaper standing at a podium emblazoned with the Seal of the President of the United States, in front of a black and white Smashing Pumpkins flag
  • A person in a business suit wearing a devil mask and being crucified
  • Five blonde children saluting
  • Close-up of Billy Corgan in a hoodie
  • Billy Corgan in a hoodie, standing next to a woman with no shirt on
Talk about zeitgeist! No confirmation that this is the actual album art (could be Jimmy Chamberlain's vacation photos, for all we know), but really, is this the most biting social critique they could come up with? Musicians hate the President? Nothing new there. Corporate America is the devil? We get it. Paris Hilton is overexposed? Way to shine a light, Pumpkins! Next thing you know they're going to tell us that Billy Corgan likes tits and hoodies. The only thing missing here is a picture of two parents dressed as Dick Cheney, one pointing at a mountain labeled "homework" and the other tearing up a piece of paper that says "PARTY!!"

And so, as industrious Pumpkins fans, we decided to come up with our own Zeitgeist artwork...
billy corgan goes lolcats

Why mess around with tired liberal fantasies when you can have Lolpumpkins! So cute, so funny, so much less pretentious! (Update: sarah g says her friend started doing i can has corgan? a bit back, but they had nothing to do with lyrics. this one is great. good stuff, sarah g's friend drew.)

Voilà, Your Volta Victors

After a sufficient amount of pre-release buzz and chatter, Björk's Volta finally sees release tomorrow, so we figured we'd remind you of that fact by announcing the winners of our Volta Photoshop This! Challenge. We relied upon your votes on the submissions -- good thing, 'cause we were having a tough time narrowing it down any further! So thanks to you, we have our three big winners. The top vote getter was Adrian and his Björk Potato Head.

ADRIAN

The rest of 'em are nestled comfortably after the jump.

Your Photoshopped Voltas

Thanks to all who took our Volta Photoshop This! challenge. As always, the graphic designers among you impressed us. Of course we received hundreds of thousands of entries, but sorted out the cream of the crop for your voting consideration. Yes, some people submitted multiple entries, which increases their chances of winning. We never specified one entry per person (oops), so we'll up the prizing and give away Björk's Volta (when it's released) to the top three most lauded artists. Take a gander after the jump, then sound off in the comments. And if you scored an early download of the album, free free to engage in some premature evaluation.

Make Your Very Own Volta Cover

The viral Volta onslaught wasn't enough to appease Björk fans' appetites and impatience for the record's release, so the photoshop savvy among 'em have taken matters into their own laptops. Stereogum reader Kevin sent over a bundle of spoofs on Björk's album art. In this one, her suit is black not.

Perfect for a contest! Give us your best parody of the Volta cover. Click here for the original art work, and here for the alternate art that leaked a few weeks back. There's only one rule: Entries must be 400 x 400 pixels. Oh and you gotta e-mail 'em to tips @ stereogum.com by Tuesday, April 24th at 6PM EST. Best submission wins a copy of the CD when it's released. There's a bunch of good ones floating around the internet already, so no cheating! We've seen 'em all. If you're looking for inspiration, some of the better ones are after the jump.
