Well it's come down to this. It's our own private Iowa and our election day, all rolled into one: The next 24 hours are the last you'll have to nominate (i.e. vote) in this year's Gummy Awards. (Look it even has a url! So you know it's official.) We're not supposed to hint at standings 'til results day, but you know that album you thought was a lock? You know, that one? Turns out it's not! Change that. Extra spice to the sauce: One member of the electorate will be randomly selected to take home the Top 50 CDs as chosen by the voting public, courtesy of Other Music.
We just opened voting for the 2007 Gummys a few days ago, and already we're on our way to a record turnout. So as you prep for food coma and since it is the season, we just wanted to pause to say: thank you. And to say: If you haven't yet, vote! One randomly selected member of the electorate will get the Top 50 discs as chosen by fellow Stereogum readers compliments of Other Music, a prize even we'd like to take home.
Based on prior discussion on Best Video, it looks like Zach Galifianakis & Will Oldham struck a nerve with that air humping, although don't forget this also was the year of Grizzly's "Knife," Justice's "D.A.N.C.E.," Battles' "Atlas," Robyn's "Konichiwa Bitches," Beirut's "Elephant Gun," etc. and etc. There's hottie talk (from Leslie Feist and Natasha Khan and Annie Clark to Kanye and Britt and Condon and Jens and Krug). But we won't even try to start shortlisting the albums namedrops. (2007's been a good year for LPs. Yes, we realize narrowing it down to three is tough.)
Remember you can vote for anybody, even if there isn't an apparent auto-fill option; if enough people vote similarly, an auto-fill choice will be dynamically created. And if you are writing in a vote, please adhere to the formats suggested on the voting page, else we'll be forced to disqualify your vote and that would suck.
OK. Now hit gummyawards.com. Polls close 12/6 at 6 PM EST. Eat, then vote, then eat some more.
It's that colder, darker time of year when we ask Stereogum readers to determine the best records and bands from the past twelve months. You may remember most of these categories from the 2006 Gummys, but we've made a few changes!
Glad you guys could join us for this, the presentation of the 25th annual Gummy Awards! We promise we'll keep this thing under three hours (har). It's time for us to honor those characters in the indie rock world that drew our heartfelt admiration and tapped our deepest snark; these are the albums that rocked our worlds, the bands that wouldn't go the fuck away, and the rockers that we thought about inappropriately and at inappropriate times. But of course, when we say "us," we mean you! Y'all hit the poll booths hard, and you (mostly) showed your good taste. We're proud of ya! And we're psyched to finally have someone to talk about the Gummy results with. So without further ado ...
Love 'em or hate 'em, the Holdy Steady bring out the vote. Also, they're the most polarizing act in indie rock (see below). Sufjan was last year's big winner with Illinoise, but the outtakes and Xmas boxed set didn't make a dent this year. Way to not forget about Destroyer, y'all. We're curious to see if you guys are as prescient as you were last December; in addition to Soof, the Top 5 included Wolf Parade, Bloc Party, Clap Your Hands, and Spoon. Even if you don't agree with the picks, gotta admit those records are still hot-buttons, getting loved and lambasted all the way through '06. Joanna Newsom still inspiring high praise and hatred in '07? It's a good bet.
Oh, but there's so much more.
After the jump, Mr. and Miss Indie Rock '06, Most Overblogged Act, Best Music Blog (Aside From The 'Gum), and The "What Do We Do With Ryan Adams?" Award.
Welcome to the 17th Annual Gummys. Once again Stereogum invites you to collectively determine the best albums of the year. This time we're calling the thing The Gummy Awards instead of last year's less-fun-to-say Readers Poll. Your top 2005 album picks were pretty tight, though, so we expect another display of good taste. We've included holdover categories Indie Rock Hottie Male and Female, and some new ones (who better than Stereogum readers to judge the year's Most Overblogged Band?) On 12/15 at 6 PM EST we'll close the poll, tally the results, and pick a random entrant who'll receive the top 25 CDs as determined by Stereogum readers. Then we'll argue about the results well into 2007.
Extra Life's Secular Works arrived unknown in our mailbox and quickly found its way into regular rotation. The New York group is fronted by guitarist/vocalist Charlie Looker, who spent six years in ZS, has played with Mick Barr, was a...
Unless you were born with one of those silver spoons, you likely work a day job, sneaking time for your own business when not taking care of someone else's. You're not alone. Brandon Stosuy finds out how our favorite indie...
Three years ago Apologies To The Queen Mary established Wolf Parade as major indie players. Since then, though, the core members' various other projects and collaborations, including Handsome Furs, Frog Eyes, Swan Lake, and Sunset Rubdown (especially), became the main...
Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. This week: the worst courtroom video of all time.
Take our ink-stained hands and join us at the OldStand, where Jon McMillan goes to remind everyone what an honest-to-goodness music magazine is supposed to look like. A while back we excavated SPIN's 8th Anniversary Dando-fest; now, through the magic...
Not all of Stereogum's favorite sounds conform to what folks expect us to cover. In this space, resident Bananafish fetishist Brandon Stosuy focuses on bands, albums, singles, and villages in Sweden that may otherwise pass by unnoticed. This installment's eclectic...
We dug Invasive Exotics, Houston crew Indian Jewelry's 2006 long player, but the feedback feels warmer, the structures more assured, expansive, unhinged and less Doors-y/VU-derived on Free Gold!. In fact, even if you didn't like their older work, you might...
