Music biz microblogging can be sure silly, with its potential for overblown beefs and identity theft. But it's hard to get mad at @LilyRoseAllen's cryptic concert ticket hunts or @METALFACEDOOM reviewing the new Eminem video. Yesterday we were retweeted by half of Tears For Fears ... #swoon. There's vital discourse happening in the Twitterverse, if you know where to look (hint: not here). But this week's gold star in tweeting goes to @SkinnerMike, AKA The Streets, and his project to record and debut three songs in three days exclusively via Twitter.

The Imposters

Twitter users were outraged last week when the service shut down @CWalken, a popular but totally fake celebrity account. Indeed it's way too easy to be duped by fake profiles. (So easy!) Not that folks care -- Tina Fey disowned her Twitter yet still has over 220k followers -- but you should know some of the celebrities you follow are actually 14-year-old boys with too much free time. With that in mind, and since it's April Fool's Day, in this week's column I'm gonna focus on some fishy Twitters and will attempt to separate the legit rock stars from the hoaxers. Let's play #detective.

The Week's 50 Best Rock Star Twitters

Microblogging service Twitter has signed up countless celebrities in recent months, and among them are some of our favorite musical artists: Trent Reznor! Colin Meloy! Ed Droste! Diddy! Stereogum Tweets too! But who can keep up with all that lunch eating? Most of us only have eight hours a day with which to procrastinate in the Twitterverse. That's why every week Stereogum founder Scott Lapatine (@scottgum) will compile the best recent rock and pop star Tweets in this space. And by "best" we sometimes mean "worst." And by "star" we rarely mean more than "professional musician" (or MC Hammer). In this inaugural column, covering the week of 3/16 more or less, a Fleet Fox quits smoking, Courtney Love goes off her meds, everyone and their mother goes to SXSW, and Ryan Adams hijacks his wife's Twitter account. This will get #ugly.
