CBGB Vegas

Hilly Kristal tells MTV about his plans for the legendary club that's closing in September:

"We want to take a lot of this stuff with us, and I think we're going to move to Las Vegas. I have some developers who have some really great space in the downtown area. So, I'd say sometime in spring we'll be in Las Vegas. It's a big undertaking, and these developers are putting the money into it, and I want to make sure that, for my benefit and theirs, we make this work. ... I don't have any choice. I have been looking for space in New York and the rent's $125,000 a month on Broadway."
Ugh. Vegas? I was hoping for Tokyo. At least he's taking the urinals with him.

Who cares where it moves to as long as you can still buy the t-shirts.

That makes no sense, there's almost no local music scene in Las Vegas, and people travelling there generally aren't into seeing anyone more underground than Nickelback.

That place could have closed 20 years ago and nobody, outside of NYC rock writers, would give a shit.

las vegas has a terrible local scene because there aren't any good small venues to support independent artists. to get any publicity bands have to be big enough to play at the house of blues, or the hard rock.
so i'm glad that CBGB's is going to perpetuate this spiral into screamo and bad garage rock.

i need to move.

Bitchin'! Hot Topic.

CBGB's should just become a chain like HARD ROCK and open up all over. NEW YORK. PARIS. SCHAUMBERG, IL.

At the least, in Myrtle Beach, next to the KISS Koffee Shop.

I actually got to sit down with Hilly in March to interview him for a school paper I was writing. He also mentioned moving CBGBs to the hipster area in the lower east side (somewher around ludlow/rivington). Does anyone know if this is happening?

Hilly will be damning himself by moving CBGBs to Las Vegas. CBGBs belongs in NYC, not in a gambling city like Vegas and the city is not a scene for punk music. I would never go to CBGBs Las Vegas, for despite the imported stuff, would never feel like the original.
