Chris Martin Gives Good Press
Depending on which article you read from Mr. Paltrow's Mexico City press conference, Chris is either an egomaniacal self promoter, or a rabidly insecure Hollywood husband. So, nothing new really. But we thought it'd be fun to share! First up, the AP reports on Chris's comments regarding the band's forthcoming, Brian Eno-produced record:
"In order for us to get excited about a new album, we have to have one song that we feel like everybody has to hear ... before we die, otherwise we'll be terribly depressed," Martin said. "So luckily with this new record we're going to make, we have that one song."But your favorite Martin lost his ingenious sense of humor right quick when a reporter brought up his rather famous life partner (via MSNBC):"I can't tell you about it, but it's basically genius," he joked.
“Gwyneth Paltrow must suffer,” opined a writer from Folha de Sao Paulo, according to our translator. “Chris Martin, her husband isn’t one of the nicest persons on earth. At least that’s what it seemed on the 20 minutes press conference.”And before you aspiring journalists think that Chris will open up about prospective musical collabs with wife-y simply by you sharing your bedroom predilections, a later mention of Paltrow's name saw him storm out of the room in a flaming ball or ire. Ironic if only 'cause nabbing Gwyneth has gotta be the greatest achievement of his musical career. But then, we have yet to hear his "The Scientist 3.0."...
When a woman reporter asked if Martin ever planned to sing a duet with Paltrow, the musician snapped: “What’s your favorite sexual position?”

hahaha yomomma. just keep dorothy mantooth out of this. that woman is a saint.

yes chris, someone asking if you'd sing a duet with your partner and the mother of your children is really crossing the line - right up there with asking frankly about sex. what a DOPE
Score = 0
coldplay really does have one amazing song on every album
Score = 0
one amazing song...and nearly a dozen that sound sorta like it.

The snarky response to Bryan would be:
Most amazingly, it's the SAME song.
But "Yellow" actually doesn't sound that much like "In My Place" or "The Scientist." In fact, I have to admit some fondness for lots of Parachutes and part of A Rush of Blood... The problem with Coldplay is one of scope. If they weren't one of the most popular bands in the world and operated on a smaller level, most of us might find them much easier to swallow. It was when they went from being the next Travis to the next U2 that it became harder to appreciate them as a decent, if unchallenging, Brit-pop band.

I think Coldplay is a very good band. If this was before X & Y came out, you people wouldn´t automatically lose all respect for me because of that confession.

Chris Martin now seems like Brandon Flowers. Oh joy.
Score = -1
I'll download his "one song" but forget about buying the album if he's turned into Brandon Flowers. Gimme a break.

Coldplay (excluding X&Y) are great... lay off!
Score = 0
Just read the comment above mine again...LOL!
Coldplay? Great?! Dude, Coldplay stands for everything that is wrong with the entire world today. I will devour Chris Martin, shit him out, mold the dump into a Grammy award, devour the grammy award, shit that out too; then smear the remains on Martin's mother's face!
Robert Pollard shold just kick his ass.

They forgot to include the part of the interview where Chris Martin said the new Coldplay album was "one of the best albums in the past 21 years".
There isn't an elevator ride long enough...zzz

For those who saw Martin on extras, I guess he was playing himself right down to a tee?

I think we're needlessly hard on Coldplay because so many prepubescent girls listen to them. Coldplay has pretty amazing singles by and large. It's just the rest of their album that is garbage.
Score = 0
I still can't believe that Coldplay got big in the states and Travis never did. The man who is one of the best albums of the millenium
Score = 0
i love parachutes.
i loved rush of blood.
i cursed and burned X&Y.
3 weeks ago. i deleted all coldplay off my mac.
they are dead to me.
but god damn it now i'm remotely interested because of BRIAN ENO.
Score = 0
So why do all of you hate X&Y? That album is the SHIT!

I think that Coldplay are a very decent band. Their music is good for putting me in a good mood or for relaxing. It's not the greatest, by far. Chris Martin may be a douche, but you shouldnt critisize him music based on that. The same with u2. So many people write them off because of bono. I enjoy Coldplay. And I'm not a 12 year old girl. Theyre the one top 40 band that I can stand to listen to. Everyone has one guilty pleasure.

I interviewed Chris in person last July, and he couldn't be more different from this report. Maybe it's because I didn't keep asking him about his wife. Anyway, I've been to enough rock band press conferences to know that they're generally retarded affairs, where for some reason people use their limited time to ask the most inane questions. I'm surprised more people haven't done a Chris Martin.

just a quick question for featherbottom...
how is promoting fair trade and keeping a general low profile in the media, everything thats wrong with the ENTIRE world today?
just wondering.
Score = 0
Creature,
No sweat in answering that question. Though I probably should have said "music" in place of "world", but I still would not have been far off. So...let's put one tiny little mark in the Positives column for Chris Maritn and Coldplay. Wahoo! Fair Trade! I would like to award two little marks, but they hardly "keep a low profile". And that's part of my beef. The Negatives column includes shameless label promotion, MTV, VH1, Rolling Stone, and absolutely NO ARTISTIC INTEGRITY. Yes, Parachutes was a different sound and a solid, if not great album. Fortunately for Martin's pocketbook, he took the advice of those industry execs (because they really have an ear to the ground), and decided to make Parachutes #2. Then the fear-veiled, misinformed, red-state morons and 12-year old girls loved it. So they made Parachutes #3! Coldplay is every bit as POP as Britney Shears or NSync.
Score = 0
are there really still people who think POP is an insult, or a dirty word? yes, britney spears was pop, but so were the beatles. so, likewise, are countless indie bands: the shins, death cab, apples in stereo. it's about a sound, not selling out... and that's a whole different topic. abitrarily equating commercial success to a lack of artistic integrity isn't just snobbish or ignorant, it's laughably typical.
Score = 0
ha, sorry, missed a letter. *arbitrarily.
Score = 0
Nice catch on the spelling, Sarah! Too bad you can't dot the i's with smiley faces, too. I appreciate your opinion, and sorry I can't/don't care to explain my opinion in greater depth.
I was actually commenting out of contempt for "typical".
Score = 0
Also allow me to thank you for explaining the meaning of the word pop. I wasn't using it as an insult. I was saying that Coldplay's grouping with, dare I say, "typical" pop bands is accurate because it is just as easily accessible. Accessable thanks to the corporate backing that I mentioned in the original post. You know, Sarah, the one that you saw as an opportunity to showcase your vocabulary. Posts on blogs are succinct and arbitrary by design. But if you'd like to talk, I would love a cup of tea...
Score = 0
Featherbottom,
Do you have ears? Parachutes was a very good album, A Rush of Blood to the Head was a great album, and X&Y sounded nothing like either of the two. Half of the people making snarky posts are the same people that said Coldplay was the best show they had ever seen after the AROBTH tour("Better than Radiohead!" "Better than the Flaming Lips!"). Then when their moms and teenage sisters started listening to them they decided to disavow that they ever remotely liked the band. I have seen this shit firsthand multiple times.

win butler?

Win?,
I love Arcade Fire! But if Win Butler were to call anything Coldplay "great", I would dissown Arcade Fire as well! Good day.
Score = 0
featherbottom,
you really do have no idea what you're talking about. "Shameless label promotion"? When did that happen? "No artistic integrity"? I specifically remember Martin scrapping the whole X & Y album after they were done recording it, and starting all over again, against the label's wishes. He said he would drive EMI into the ground if that's what it took to record the album. What, he did an interview with Rolling Stone?!! What an asshole!
Score = 0
People like featherbottom really confuse me, why change the music you play? The Beatles music all sounds pretty much the same, but it's still all GREAT! It's all about the sound! If Coldplay decided to change their music just to be 'different' they wouldn't FUCKING be or sound like Coldplay! Talk, Clocks, The Hardest Part, Politik, Amsterdam, Yellow, Crests of Waves, ect ect all don't sound exactly the same but enough to give us what we want from Coldplay, great melodies! To say something as stupid as they're all 'generic' rubs me that you're quiet ignorant and it does seem as if you play them off because what? More people listen to them now? (This is based on what you said here: I love Arcade Fire! But if Win Butler were to call anything Coldplay "great", I would dissown Arcade Fire as well! Good day) Completly proving Win Butler's point btw, and mine.
Score = 0
Oh by the way, he's not an asshole.
If you had paparazzi taking pictures of you walking around just trying to live your life, be with your wife and kids, how would you take anything personal being asked? By saying 'What's your favorite Sexual position?' Chris was basically saying 'yeah how do you like being asked about your personal life, stay out of mine'. If i had somone taking pictures of me close to my face, following me around just trying to go out and eat ect, i'd end up punching a camerman lol.
Score = 0
why does everyone have to condemn everything thats popular??
i just like their music.
isnt that the only thing you should worry about?
the music?
not how popular....or who else likes them
what happening to that?
Score = 0
My, my. Can any of you angry writers stop cursing. It makes you look like trashy 2nd class citizens. We all are a jerk at least once in our life. Coldplays music is absolutely the best out there right now. I challenge anyone of you, telling me a better band than this as of now. With the age of uncreativity, such as, well just take a glance at MTV or VH1 (when they do play music). As in life you have to let the little things go.
Score = 0
I'm not a huge fan of all of their music, but i do enjoy X&Y and don't understand why you all hate it. Anyway, the new album is incredible. Pick up a copy, you won't be disappointed.
