Christian Rock (Not Sufjan-Related)
Thanks Jimmy Jazz for this bizarre link.
Things That Are Great About This
1. You find out what's on a gold or platinum record
2. This one is recorded backwards, and it's not the guy's single
3. The single in question is from a Christian Rock comp
4. The single is titled "The Devil Is Bad"
5. The gold record appears to be stored on top of his toilet

Pat Robertson had to be involved in this somehow.

That "The Devil is Bad" song freaks me out.

I remember those guys from my high school uber-evangelical days. It's good to see they still have souls and weren't ingested by the Christian Music machine.

well now i know where to send MY new single, "Holy Lamb in my Hand (feat. choir boyz)"

Isn't a platinum record for when you sell a million copies? I thought half a mil got you a gold record...
Score = 0
Good point, Dan.
Score = 0
Since it was a double album, you only had to sell half as many to go platinum. That's weak on so many levels.
The Christian Culture machine is pretty corrupt.
I like it that some Christian artists are going the legit route: Sufjan, Br. Danielson, etc.

this is quite the funny. especially the toilet mount.

I went to college with some kids from 5 Minute Walk Records.

It's particularly appropriate that it only plays backwards. If only it actually spewed Satanic incantations...

i could be wrong, too lazy to google, but i believe in Iceland gold is something like 10k sold, and platinum is 50k sold. heard that sugar rooster and "get out of my face!" bjork both went uberplatinum many times over

Bootleg?

You are the devil and the devil is bad! Repeat that over and over again and you have the song. They put on a decent show in concert from what I remember back in my Jr High days.....yes, I have seen them in concert. I didn't think I would ever hear of them again.

Let's bomb them all in the name of the lord.

You all need to send $5 to me, Holy Dude, and the Lord will bestow upon thee advance copies of Broken Social Scene.
Did anyone hear that Pat Robertson bit on Stern this morning? I can't beleive anyone takes that guy seriously.

Remember that South Park where Cartman formed the christian rock band. I believe he made a bet with Kyle that about recording a platinum album. Anyway, the reason he chose to form a christian rock band is because in the christian rock industry you don't have to sell as many albums to get a platinum record. He ended up winning the bet. South Park is educational.

One time my friend Matt wanted to start a Christian band with me. He's agnostic, but he figured that since I'm a Christian, that would be enough.
He thought it would be easier to get your foot in the door with people who buy your album bacause of the album art and record label, rather than the content of the... wait a second! That's a lot like the indie scene too!

Just to clarify for no good reason, the awards are actually for albums *shipped* not sold. The industry claims that sales figures are unreliable, and that the only definite number is how many copies were sent from the label to stores.
Britney's second record (I think) went something like 4x platinum on the day of release. It took a couple of months to actually sell them all.
Score = 0
Another clarification: Cartman did not choose Christian rock because of any disparity in god/platinum thresholds, but rather because he knew how easy it would be to become popular within the Christian rock scene.
Also, he in fact did not end up winning the bet because he was awarded a myrrh record (as in gold and frankincence) not a platinum record.

I just emailed a friend of mine who worked for that record label and this is what she said about his post.
"I never picked up on his being an idiot back in the day. Wow. How did I miss that? I love it when people take a very elementary understanding
of something and then try and make themselves sound like they are revealing a profound truth. Only truth I picked up on is that he's an
ungrateful little shit. :)
Nobody made records of any project in 1999 so why would he think the album in the frame would be the actual record?
That annoying band was my joy to work with but I
can't remember who he was in the band. I was just happy when they brokeup. It was like working with 12 year olds. :)"

i bought a bunch of gold record riaa awards at a yard sale once (i think i paid $10 each) ... i gave my friend (the Styx fan) ... a platinum award for Styx and i have Egyptian Lover "egypt egypt" in my garage ... i bought these before i knew of the booming sucker market on ebay ...
i think 1999,2000 was the last years the labels gave out gold records so easily (the labels have to pay for them but they can only issue them for RIAA certified "product") ...

Wow, that's crazy. I totally remember the band, met the guy once, and the guy who used to own the record label (Frank Tate) goes to my friend's church.
PS. They were a swing band, and they covered a Down By Law song on their record. They were ludicrous.

I too have been through the whole 'uber evangelical' days, and I shit you not, I have a cd in my closet called 'Will Rock For Jesus'.
Just to clarify, I did not purchase the cd, it was free when I purchased a switchfoot cd...also now residing in the murky depths of my closet.
...What was I thinking?!
Oh and kudos to commenter, "Wow (No Pun Intentded)", for you made me choke on my potato, you funny bastard.

the backwards part and oversized aspect is most likely due to the fact that the platinum record is just the unformed/uncut stamper plate (made from the lacquer) used to press a record. the normal playing lacquer gets plated (platinum or platinum like substance) and stamper plates are made from this as a mirror image. the stampers have extra metal at the edges and are bent to fit onto the vinyl pressing machines. the stampers then press globs of heated vinyl goo to make a mirror image of themselves and a proper playing LP. record making geekiness. sorry.

I always did wonder what was on those plated silver/gold/plat/diamond records.
Do they all have that track?
