Class Of 1981 Snubbed
Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame ballots have been mailed, and apparently the nominating committee couldn't find one newly eligible act to include. Artists can be nominated 25 years after the release of their first album. No one with a 1981 debut made the cut ... and actually, I can't think of one off the top of my head. (Anyone?)
This leaves more room for always-the-bride's-maid bids:
Other holdovers include John Mellencamp, J. Geils Band, Patti Smith, Chic, and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, who would be the first rap act inducted.
Nominated this year FOR THE FIRST TIME are Miles Davis, The Dave Clark Five, Blondie, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I mean, Cat Stevens.
Rush, Van Halen, Yes, Genesis, ELO, Joan Jett, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Heart, Deep Purple, and Pat Benatar all missing from the nomination list ... again.
So who debuted in '81? Duran Duran?

Some great ones indeed Mr. Appleseed. I tend to favor Echo & the Bunnymen...still a very compelling live band...wait till you hear their new one, due this week.
English Beat just played LA & were amazing. Can't wait to see Go Team! tonight.

And so it begins...

yeah, i know... just was trying to fuck with Mr. Scott the gum because he was most likely fucking with me...... bet he couldn't have listed all the 1980 debuts as fast as i did......... i do know when i am being screwed with you know....
Score = 0
& i do love his satire though...& can definitely keep up with it no problema here...
Score = 0
hey yeah, geez thanks, i set a record on Stereogum for comments, wow, that and 2 cents will buy me a friggin cup of water at McDonalds, do i get some kind of medal or something i can pin on my chest? Or maybe a little Gumby i can keep by my side while I'm typing on the computer?
just trying to bide the time until i find another job & intrigued by the Gumster's wit & the blog operation he is running up there in NYC...but i will say if the Gummer wants to play in the sandbox with me, as i said above to Matthew, he best bring out the best toys he has..
see Mr. Appleseed was born at night, but not friggin last night...& Mr. Appleseed has done a lot of things in his time & dealt with characters much more satirical than the Gum crew.. I can handle the Gum & the his cast of jokesters (and have kinda taken a shine to their wit)... and being originally from the Boston area, I am very, very skilled in the art of handling the New York style.... I love to be challenged but anyone who does better have woken up early, eaten a whole box of Wheaties, drank a pot of coffee, and better be well prepared... The Gum thinks he tricked me on the 1980 post.... i have been waiting for days for him to retaliate for my comments on his post about CMJ..just lying in wait for his attack...knew it was coming & was smiling the whole time,
Love,
Mr. Appleseed

Yeah, I think the new ballot is for '06 induction, thus _1981_ debut albums, not 1980. In which case, don't hold your breath for the likes of The Minutemen or Hüsker Dü or The Replacements. And frankly, yawn, an organization that purports to be about "rock'n'roll" yet won't even nominate those groups, much less induct The Stooges or Black Sabbath after six or seven years of eligibility, is utter rubbish. Leaving Ozzy or Iggy out in the cold is like baseball banning Shoeless Joe or Charlie Hustle. I bet Sting's in there already, though! Wankers.

I hope my comment even gets read after Appleseed's rants. Anyhow, this just goes to prove that the R&RHOF will have trouble recognizing British new wave under what "they" deam Rock and Roll. Duran Duran and Depeche Mode released their debut singles in 1981.
Score = 0
sorry man, did not mean to clog up the space, don't worry i probably won't be back anyways since i get messed with just for participating on this so called blog... should be spending my time in better places with better people... & i was talking about debut albums not singles. know quite a bit about British music myself since spent a lot of time there.. this isn't the place though if you you really know about music and want to have an educated discussion about em so i wouldn't worry too much if your comment didn't get read... this blog is about fucking with people and that is about it.

I would love to see a R&R Hall of Fame class with The Stooges and The Sex Pistols together, but for crying out loud, let Skynyrd in already

how in the sweet bejeheysus is it possible for patti amith *or* iggy pop to still be overlooked? proof positive that this has nothing at all to do with rock and roll.

Black Flag released their debut in 1981. I'd like to see Henry Rollins' acceptance speech for sure.

Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Searching for the Young Soul Rebels
Prince - Dirty Mind
David Bowie - Scary Monsters

The Specials' debut came out in 1979 not 1980. (Madness' One Step Beyond came out in '79 too, by the way).
The (English) Beat's debut was in 1980, as some noted, and that album is one of the best new wave British albums, but they'll never even come close to getting nominated, if not only as a result of them spawning the Fine Young Cannibals.
Speaking of great British ska bands, the Selecter and Bad Manners also debuted in 1980. But they won't get nominated either.
1981 IS a big year for second wave punk. Not only the bands mentioned (Black Flag, Husker Du, Minutemen) but also the Descendents and Minor Threat. However, I'd say unless 80's punk gets "rediscovered" by another generation, these bands haven't a chance either. Not that they care, I gather.

I second the nominations of the Pretenders and the English Beat--both of whose debut albums are killer. I tried to fact check that indeed those bands debuted with those album, but amazon was of no help. I would take the Pretenders first two albums over any yeah yeah yeah or sleater-kinney album without question. Chryssie Hynde, before going real soft, had a real gift for bitchy, biting, tough-girl lyrics and attitude--sort of female version of Elvis Costello for a brief period of time. As for the English Beat, for those that think they hate Ska this album explains why people liked Ska in the first place. This album does not suck like a Mighty Mighty Bosstones album--guaranteed.

Hey Appleseed...ain't the All Music Guide just the coolest? Yeah...you're a real flippin' genius. How's about changing that "probably won't be back" to a "definitely won't be back". Sure...most of us will shed a few tears but it will pass.
Eat a bag of 'em,
S.A.

Hey Klapper, definitely agree on the English Beat point. Although I think that the only way to convince a ska hater to at least appreciate it is to play some 60's ska. Only someone with a cold dead heart could hate "Lucky 7" or "Phoenix City". Also, I'd play the original version of "One Love" to demonstrate that in fact reggae is slow ska, not the opposite.
Any idiot can listen to Save Ferris and write-off an whole musical genre. It'd be like writing off hip-hop, rap, and funk based upon listening to Ice Ice Baby.

I'm pretty sure Pretenders debuted in 1979, but lack the interest in finding out for sure. Why they're not already nominated is beyond me.
Johnny, you're apparently hearing voices. Nobody's talking to you. Put down the cough syrup and go take a nap.

PS the Pretenders aren't nominated this year because THEY WERE INDUCTED LAST YEAR. So you can put that one to bed.
They've got Devo memorobilia all over that museum, but I have a hard time seeing the actual band being let in. Despite all the cred from other bands and journalists, the spuds will probably never twist away the gates of steel in Cleveland.

there ya go. 81 t-shirt. rock on.

I'm sort of surprised no one has mentioned this already, but Black Flag debuted on record in 1978. 1981 was their first full LP. So they were eligible for nomination two years ago. The Minutemen debuted in 1980 with the -Paranoid Time- EP. They could have been added to the ballot this year.
(Unless the HOF rules run by 25 years after the first LP. But I'm pretty sure it's 25 years after the first commercially released recording).

Where the fuck is Lobo in this list? Or Starship?

New Order anyone?
Although if they haven't already been inducted as Joy Division what's the point?

Dear djangojones,
If you think Scary Monsters is David Bowie's debut album, you don't know anything.
Sincerely,
Fred

way way way up there, someone said to check out the early 80's band, "THE SOUND". I second that. Helluva band and way overlooked. 1981's "From the Lion's Mouth" is well worth the listen.

I still can't believe The Ronettes aren't in there. Phil Spector apparently has used his powers to block them from the ballot because of his ongoing fight with Ronnie Spector. Such a shame, they deserved this honor years ago.

depeche mode - speak and spell 1981...although that's probably their worst album

You know he got the cure...but then he went astray,
He used to stay awake
To drive the dreams he had away
He wanted to believe
In the hands of love...
His head it felt heavy
As he cut across the land
He went deeper into black
Deeper into white...he could see
The stars shine
Like nails in the night
He felt the healing
Healing, healing, healing
Hands of love
Like the stars shiny, shiny...
]from above.
He put his hands in the pocket
His finger on the steel
The pistol weighed heavy
His heart he could feel
Was beating, beating
Beating, beating oh my love
Oh my love, oh my love
Oh my love.
He saw the hands that build
Could also pull down....
The hands of love.

I'm confused....I've read a couple outside articles stating 1980 as the qualifying year for the 2006 inductions. I thought it was 1981 as stated above, here. How do we know which is the qualifying year for certain? Can anyone in fact, corroborate 1981 as the qualifying year....

i dont get it. its 1981..25 years after debut. u2 was put in this year for 1980, since thats the year boy came out. whats with all the 1980 rubbish...lot of good stuff for '81...like they'll ever put black flag in...though they should

Heart? ARe you kidding me? They're horrible. Consider what Hall of Fame material is first, then ask yourself if they belong.
