CMJ Posting Board

The big music clusterfuck is about a week away -- but it's already giving us a headache! Go here for a searchable database of dates, venues, and bands, but be warned: it's a tad overwhelming. And if you're feeling that the lineup's a little weak this year, we're with ya. But still, consider this your sounding board for which bands or showcases are not to be missed (The Knife? 120 Days? Suzanne Vega?). As always, we'd love your input. Together, we can make it happen.

This is who should not be missed, for real:

The Knife
The Shins
The Album Leaf
Cassettes Won't Listen
Cold War Kids
Beans with Holy Fuck
The Clipse

I'm coming over from LDN for the clusterfuck and I can recomend Findlay Brown (new UK folk in the vein of CSNY) and Lo-Fi-Fnk. I'm super looking forward to seeing Chris or Christopher Willits

I'm heading over from Sydney (beat that, LDN!)... and looking forward to (yes) The Knife, Keren Ann, Scissors for Lefty, Fog, Tom Brosseau, Girl Talk, Loney Dear, Shy Child, Madlib, Oxford Collapse, Hot Chip, Lavender Diamond, Blue Cheer, The Annuals, Decemberists, Micah P, Mew, The Clipse and what could be hilarious in the Battle of the DJ's panel.

The lineup is so ridiculous it makes me want to laugh and cry all at once.

I'll be participating in the Hush Records showcase on 11/1 at the Living Room. It's going to be a great evening of music from (imho) the best record label in Portland. I'll be playing with 3 of the bands...

Where is the breakout new group? From my perspective, nowhere. I mean: The Knife? I'm all for 80s nostalgia, but come on. And Hot Chip may be this year's electronica band, but it's hard to get excited over their repetitive sound.

And CMJ always runs itself like some sick college hazing, not a music journal fest. If they can't book at clubs with decent stage and audience space, could they at least insist on better sound, or at least have the owners clean their pig-sties up a tad? Is "rock authenticity" really just a matter of crappy amps, cruddy spaces and urine pools?

CMJ?
SOS!

In 2002, when local NYC pals' bands were in CMJ, it was up to them to book their own slots at clubs (not as easy as it sounds). CMJ didn't actually place the band in a slot. Maybe that's changed...I'd love to know more about the booking elements of it all...seems a bit skaggly. In any case, I'll be out a bit, shooting pix and soaking it up.

Dave Depper reads Stereogum!? Amazing.

Other than the Hush Records stuff I'd highly recommend seeing Women & Children. Don't know if anyone else here picked up the 10" box set thing they did a year or two ago, but from the music on that and the DVD I couldn't recommend them enough. Can't wait to get their new CD.

Call me Lightning's album was also very good.

So hard to pick out bands from that list, its making my eyes go funny.

Did I just see Duran x3 and Scanners in there?! WOAHLY CRAP. Go and see both of those!

Every year I attend the same thing happens - I make a list of all the bands I want to see, and then inevitably the day of any show, someone I am talking to clues me in to something better. I've learned that the key is have some default bands you'd like to check out, but really just keep your ear to the street and see what ppl are talking about. Then, depending who is talking, check it out or run for the hills....

the subpop showcase should be good times. there are more than a few interesting items, but it's so dicey getting into anything that I'm trying to play it by ear and availability rather than pin my hopes on the particulars.

i think people want us to be poor
cuz they dont have the beautiful mind to lyrically soar.
and they dont know that lovliness goes a long way.
like beyond mundane,

I completely understand what you are saying, my whole life I had the toughest time finding bras that fit properly. I thought I was the only one, but now I know that most women don't wear the right size bra. Here is the site that I found extemely helpful. bestlingeriesuperstore.com It shows exactly how to correctly fit a bra, how it should look, etc. This is something that nobody ever teaches us.
I hope you find it as useful as I have.
