Coachella 2009 Line-Up

thumbnail icon: Coachella 2009 Line-Up

This big announce was supposed to come days ago, and of course people (us) freaked that it didn't. But as Goldenvoice President Paul Tollett put it, "We're not stalling, we're still working on the show. Everything we do is in service of the show, not in service of the announcement of the show." Whether they were stalling or working or whatever, who cares: Coachella's back in the blockbuster business.

Headliners: Paul McCartney (Friday), The Killers (Saturday), The Cure (Sunday). OK, maybe not insane enough for you. Yet. But as always, it's in the fine print of the Indio poster that the party takes full shape. Also on Friday: Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, Leonard Cohen, Conor Oberst, Beirut, Girl Talk, M. Ward, Crystal Castles, Buraka Som Sistema, the Hold Steady. For your Saturday: TV On The Radio, Band Of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Superchunk, Liars, Blitzen Trapper, Gang Gang Dance, Tinariwen, Ida Maria, Mastodon, Hercules & Love Affair. And Sunday? My Bloody fucking Valentine. (And Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Throbbing Gristle, PB&J, Antony, Lykke Li, Okkervil, Fucked Up, No Age, Vivan Girls, Gaslight Anthem, but yeah ... MBV. Basically a double-headliner Sunday.)

Here's the poster:

Boom.

Tickets are on sale (3-day passes at $270, single day at $100) over at coachella.com. See you there.

Everyone will be pissing thier pants over Sir Paul, but the fact that Throbbing Gristle is finally playing over here is totally worth the ticket price.

Hmm maybe it's because we need to work quite a bit harder to be anywhere near as fun to listen to or as creative as those artists. We consider ourselves lucky to be included in Coachella and to be jizzed over by blogs like this one. We don't even get it! Ha! Finn, out.

hey Paul:

The reason Hold Steady gets down played is b/c Coachella people, like me, think that Hold Steady is WAY over rated compared to all of the other great artists out there.

We'll be doing a special series for Coachella 2009, so stay tuned to http://indierockcafe.com

Sub My Morning Jacket for The Killers on Saturday night and you've got a great festival. Also, it would be great to have the Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, and MMJ the same day so every can see how the DON"T sound the same.

As much as I can half-stand Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, & PB&J, I think they're being rushed to the top of the line-up only making room for unknowns that have every chance of disappointing. I'd personally rather not have left that line-up so open to newcomers like that. Otherwise, it ain't bad. (Would've put Macca on Sun., though)

Even when Macca's got a new album to promote (which he will), the setlist is heavy on Beatles

Macca, Moz and Leonard Cohen (does he have a cool nickname?) on the same day is pretty amazing. Since they went to the 3-day format, Friday's usually been the weakest day. Not this year.

They should keep the artists they have but reschedule them into different days like: Dadrock Friday (Moz, Macca, Killers, Weller) Trainwreck Saturday (Amy Winehouse, Brian Jonestown Massacre, TRAVISDJ-AM, the Horrors) & Awesome Sunday (Tinariwen, Mastadon, MBV, Throbbing Gristle) with a Special Fourth Magical Day featuring a reunited Pavement, Blur, Spacemen 3, Led Zeppelin & an exhumed & zombified Beatles!
