Official Coachella Lineup 2008: See You On The Dark Side Of The Moon
Last year was our first Coachella, and it easily ranked as our favorite festival of '07 -- due to our newness to Indio, but also to an unmatched lineup with lots of built-in storylines (Björk's first US Volta shows, reunion sets from Rage Against The Machine, Crowded House, and the Jesus & Mary Chain plus ScarJo, along with CSS meeting Paris Hilton and Spank Rock meeting the Lohan). If you thought this year's would top it with a My Bloody Valentine reunion, or a Radiohead set ... sorry! You'll just have to wait for Coachella East. Maybe.
Goldenvoice's desert-set show stopper this year is Roger Waters's recreation of the classic Dark Side Of The Moon. Which will be awesome! But probably not the big news some were hoping for. Still, Indio continues its tradition as being a first-rate place to catch recently reunited acts, like Portishead, the Verve, and the Breeders. Also very good looking: Kraftwerk, MMJ, and a second consecutive year of dishing out Justice.
Lineup after the jump.

wow HUGE disappointment! Definitely not worth it so far...

WORST!

Terrible.
Bonnaroo is probably going to blow this thing out of the water without even trying.

been to coachella twice and this one is about as weak an initial lineup (there are loads more to be confirmed) as I've seen. It's bad when they announce the big names and you have a hard time figuring out who the headliners are (besides Waters).
Fingers crossed for Sasquatch getting it right.
Score = 0
Wow, that's truly dreadful, really inexcusable in many ways, although I suppose all of the Radiohead fans should be ecstatic to sit through Roger fucking Waters...good god.
Score = 0
I like Portishead as much as the next man (if the next man agrees that the best thing Portishead did was introduce the world to their touring DJ - Andy Smith), but don't they make music better suited to listening to after you've been to a festival? You know, when your come-down has kicked in and you need something in-offensive to listen to as you silently pray for sleep.

So that's happening.

Any festival that combines the awesome of "Holy Fuck" and "Dwight Yoakam" is A-OK with me.
great how people complain about a festival with about 735 bands in a great location. life is just sooooooooooo harsh!
That being said, I've never been. waaaaaaay too hot!

I'm from the bay area and have gone the last couple of years and it's been so freaking fun, and was so looking forward to going again this year but no thanks this is the worst lineup ever for coachella, jack johnson? fuck that, where's radiohead, m83, love is all, under byen, various, yyy, long blondes etc etc...... this is sooo sad.
Score = 0
Jack Johnson is easily the worst Coachella headliner ever...And Roger Waters has been doing Dark Side for the past two years straight. Disappointing but I'm going.
Score = 0
fucking the breeders
Score = 0
i'm happy there isn't some band like TOOL, RATM, etc, those bands have always ruined the coachella experience for me with a bunch of fucking jerkoffs running around amp'ed up.
With that said, coachella is always about the smaller bands, and there are a ton this year that i'm excited to see, i'll be there all 3 days, and i'll enjoy many dozens of awesome shows.
The Verve, Spiritualized, Portishead, The Streets, and so many more will kick ass...

SRSLY, ppl, the headliners have been second billing for the scenester set since . . . Radiohead did this thing like, four years ago. See above, Coachella is always about the Avant, small-scale acts. Granted, those acts are half-milquetoast/half-has-been and THAT is what's probably even more disappointing. Shit, when I saw that fake bill of Bowie/Radiohead/MBV, I considered quitting my job and becoming a full-fledged Indio freak. This, however, makes me look forward to life in the orient. . .
Score = 0
People need to read through the acts that aren't headlining. Because 80% of them deserve to be headlining over Jack Johnson and Roger Waters (and Portishead in a few occassions).
The lineup is almost as great as last year. The only difference is that they don't have any reunions of good bands. And guys, c'mon. Rage and the Mary Chain feat. Scarlett Johansson is impossible to top anyway.
Score = 0
seven bands the first day, eight the second, and seven the last? sounds good enough for me. too bad i'm poor...
Score = 0
How can anyone say that this compares AT ALL to last year's? I'm sure the bands that are in it will be great, etc, but I'm deterred from going just from comparing it to last year's lineup....for fuck's sake, 07 had:
Interpol, Arctic Monkeys, DJ Shadow, Digitalism, Tokyo Police Club, Arcade FIre, Decemberists, Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, Blonde Redhead, !!!, Hot Chip, MSTRKRFT, Ghostface, Jstice, Girl Talk, RATM, Jr. Boys, CSS, Klaxons, Tapes n Tapes, Grizzly Bear.
the only top-notch groups this are:
Kraftwerk, Death Cab for Cutie, Justice, Fatboy Slim, The National, Animal Collective, Battles, Diplo, Vampire Weekend, Dan Deacon, Rilo Kiley, M.I.A., Hot Chip, Cold War Kids, Booka Shade, Cool Kids, Devotchka.
(this isn't to say that there aren't any other good groups performing, undoubtedly some of whom I don't know about, but I'd say the ones I've listed are in a different category).
A few somewhat unrelated issues:
1) Is Booka Shade coming out with a new release?
2) I hate how the hype machine is pushing Vampire Weekend down everyone's throats (saw them on MTV 2, even). They are good for a young band, but no where near Tokyo Police Club, and I think their friends in Ra Ra Riot are even better. Plus it's not like they've released anything stellar yet.
3) Is it possible some groups are "saving" their performances for the East Coast festival?
4) Is Jack Johnson a joke? Or did no one from Coachella management see the Derrick Comedy "Bro Rape"?
~Sincerely,
Disappointed.

haha, and all the nu-rave hipsters are upset.
Sure, Jack Johnson headlining is a joke, but I doubt I would have liked any big headliner Coachella brought. Including Radiohead (yes, feel free to shoot me currently.)
I'm From Barcelona/Jens Lekman/Stars/Justice/Rilo Kiley/Hot Chip/STEPHEN MALKMUS/Chromeo/Metric/The Bird and the Bee=love.
That said, could be more lovely. Should still be quite lovely.
Score = 0
Yeah, this is really underwhelming, which actually kind of makes me happy. I wouldn't nearly have enough cash to get out there this year anyways.
Bonnaroo should be much better.
And rumor has it that Lollapalooza is going to be simply AMAZING, as I've got a very reliable source suggesting Radiohead will be headlining (among other potential dynamite acts).
Score = 0
The headliners aren't nearly as...flashy as years past, but the other acts are really solid.
Score = 0
unless you've actually seen roger waters do dark side, and somehow hated it, you need to shut the fuck up.
Score = 0
Ooooh what a crappy underwhelming lineup.

@ Jim:
My gut doesn't think Radiohead will do 'Palooza but it will still beat Coachella hands down (Too many acts to not give a shit about). WAY too many up-and-comers to provide a good balance of establish acts that people would want to see (all the way to Indio for "scene legend" Dan Deacon?).
That and now that Bonnaroo has denied a Zeppelin reunion, the only way that will be exciting is if they have a Zeppelin reunion.
Score = 0
I like Dimitri from Paris and Cinematic Orchestra. This site makes me laugh because no one else does.
It's funny that people commenting on stereogum argue about the relevence of indie but gloss over any sort of real musical discussion. It makes me think you are all still trying to learn how to play the bass part for 'Come As You Are'. The rest of us are sorry that Roger Waters isn't from LA and you didn't find out about him on pitchfork before us. It's all so trite, isn't it?
Score = 0
I was going to go no matter what.... but Jack Johnson and Roger Waters? ARE YOU SERIOUS? This is inexcusably bad, and I'm definitely not going now.
And I can play the bass line to "Come As You Are". Just sayin'.
Score = 0
well, maybe the thinner selection of good bands will mean i won't have to skip hearing artists in favor of other artists playing at the same time. maybe it will be a full day of all the good bands performing at the right times without any schedule conflicts... until the headliners, when i can go home and rest up for the next day.
the smaller bands look tight. wish i had seen tapes n tapes n grizzly bear last year. fuck it, last year looks like it was ten times better.

I'm still waiting on that Cocteau Twins reunion . . .

OH MY GOD! I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS LIST OF BANDS! IT'S SO TERRIBLE! I WILL NOT GO! I FEEL THE AVERAGE NATURE OF THIS SHOW!

you are all stupid. this lineup is full of win. just because there are alot of underground gems there you probably never heard of there doesn't mean its horrible. you fail epically. and KRAFTWERK will be there. that alone is full of PURE WIN.

because oh my god, i'm really excited.

i hate jack johnson and his kind. those frat/surfer boys from UCSB suck. they're the same damn fuckers who took up space at RATM and made my manu chao experience bad because they just stood there like damn drunk fucks. there would be no RATM without mano negra. ahem...

I'm so happy with this lineup. I've never seen Kraftwerk but my friend has and said it was awesome to see these guys live. I've always been a Floyd fan and getting another chance to see R. Waters is great! I saw My Morning Jacket at Coachella a couple of years again and they were great. Raconteurs are great as well. My fianceee has seen the National and she likes them a lot. I've seen The Shout Out Louds at a smaller venue, they're pretty good too. I wouldn't say this is the best Coachella lineup, but it's way better than the fake lineup I saw last week. I can't stand Radiohead (they're almost as bad a Sigur Ros) and I'm glad they're not playing. However, I would agree that Portishead and Jack Johnson are weak headliners. Where are the Shins?

Could it be that Coachella are running out of reunion bands? This sounds like a broad mix of music to me, and I think the naysayers should just keep quiet until they actually get there. Sounds like a good time except why no Bat For Lashes?

Pavement better reform next year at Coachella to make up for this shit.
Worst lineup ever.

You american ingrates disgust me. There are tons of good bands that I'd kill to see playing in my country, yet all you do is bitch and moan because the headliner(s) sucks. Who the hell cares?

I went last year and it changed my life. I'm devastated... I was really looking forward to it. Not at all impressed with the lineup -- very bland -- and the acts that I want to see are spread out over the three days. Aside from the Brooklyn hipster bands it doesn't even seem like Coachella. More Bonoroo than Coachella. Jack Johnson??

Ok. THIS IS ALMOST AS BAD AS THE JOKE MOCK-UPS. Are you fucking kidding me. Jack Johnson. Wow. We were getting excited for all this My Bloody Valentine/Radiohead talk. And now you give us Jack Johnson and Tegan and Sara plus every single band that has tried to have a residency at Spaceland in Silverlake. I have lost all hope in this festival. I guess I may as well start looking at going to ATP and coughing up some cash for a plane ticket because Coachella is basically a huge waste of time and money now. BTW why do you need 3 days to throw on a bunch of not so talented "indie/electronic" groups.
Score = 0
You got my hopes up for a proper Pink Floyd reunion, not a Roger Waters solo set. Sigh...
Score = 0
Aesop Rock is awesome, but you're all a bunch of racists.
Tegan and Sara are awesome, but you're all a bunch of homophobes.

i don't get all the jack johnson= frat music. I'm in college, frat bro's aren't jack fans. The only jack fans i know are stoners. Yeah I'm a stoner, what of it? You people need to chill the fuck out and get off your high horse. Not everyone digs the radiohead and of montreal. To change a Moz song title, "Williamsburg is NOT the world."
Score = 0
Okay, okay. So the lineup isn't as good as last year's? But then again, there's some fantastic bands playing this year, and I can think of more bands that I'm glad aren't playing than ones I wish were. Seriously, there's nothing to be complaining about. Where I live, the last band that came here was a country outfit made up of three 60+ year old men. Coachella sounds fine to me.
Score = 0
If I could stand to return to that part of the country, I'd totally consider going, looks like a lot of fun acts to me.
Score = 0
so disappointed. yes, there are some good smaller bands, but definitely not worth the $300 when i could go to their non-festival shows in less heat and hear a whole set.
sasquatch better bring it since i'm skipping this one.

Bonnaroo is closer anyway. Enjoy your suckfest, California!

Seeing The Annuals play again would be worth the admission AND the flight from NYC alone. There are a million gems in this lineup, and if you people can't see that, you need to expand your itunes playlist. who does everyone want to play? "cool hipster indie band of the month" (wolf-something)? give me a break. Had i not just started a new job, i'd have flown out for this.
people never cease to amaze me. just need something to bitch about? 90 bucks wont damage your trust fund, kids.

man, no beatles, no zeppelin, no slayer and no smiths reunion?? WHAT A SUCKY LINEUP
Score = 0
My bet is Coachella has an ace (or maybe two) still up their sleeve that they don't want to show yet. Maybe they wait for Bonnaroo to announce their lineup then come out and say they've got the reincarnation of Elvis and Daft Punk and what not. Sort of like a check-raise type thing.
