Cat Power Covers Cat Stevens

The diamond industry is pulling into high gear to grab the holiday dollars you've set aside for that special lady in your life with an ad made in Cat heaven. You guys have been asking about this and we finally tracked it down: Chan covering Mr. Stevens' "How Can I Tell You." Dudes like Nas and Leo DiCaprio may not approve, but this video shows she'll prefer diamonds in the dark to a surprise pearl necklace any night (rimshot). Go ahead and add this to the list of cool Cat covers available only on TV.

Oh wow, that was Chan? Didn't realize it.

Probably because that commercial's kinda stupidly uncreative.

I am genuinely happy that Chan is sober and not such a mess, but I think it's pretty obvious that she's still trying to find her footing in the world of sobriety. Shilling for the diamond industry? First, I'm amazed that Yusaf Islam would allow such a corrupt and despotic industry to use one of his songs to sell such a dirty product as a diamond. I am only slightly less amazed that Cat Power sold out to Zales or DeBeers or whoever was behind that piece of crap.

I hope she got a diamond-encrusted Cingular phone out of that deal.

That's up there with the annual slew of "Luxury Car With A Red Bow Tied Around It" commercials.

The cover, minus its usage (if that's possible), is good, if a little expected.

She could do commericals for McDonalds for all I care - her voice is unbeliveably beautiful.

They should have had her dance around with a diamond necklace on. Nothing says I Love You like some of those patented short-bus kung fu Chan chops

She could sing the phone book & it would sound lovely.....

I love it when people criticize artists for accepting offers that they'll never be in a position to get in the first place......so it easy to say that you wouldnt do it or that someone shouldnt. Sometimes it's the only way indie artists ever really make any money... you notice also that Chan never gives her original songs to commercials so I do think she draws the line somewhere..either way , selling out isnt what it used to be...

I absolutely LOVE Chan Marshall. I truly believe she is the best female singer alive today...seriously. I saw this commercial a few weeks ago and I immediately noticed her voice.
I love everything about Chan. Marry me Chan? Please?

She should do a remix with Common and have him rap about the gap so I can be disappointed in them both at the same time.

Who the F cares...you guys are like a bunch of cry baby high school girls. The original is good, her cover also sounds good. In addition, I could give two sh*ts who the commercial is for..

I'm not against indie bands making money from commercials, but this is a stunning turnaround for someone who recorded something like "cross bones style".

shut up. chan is the shit. i'm sure if it werent for hollywood (blood diamond) opening up your eyes to such a terrible thing, which it is, I'm sure most of you were wearing your diamonds just until a few weeks ago. everybody's got to eat.

the way that this girl puts her own wonderful spin on covers, and does it on her own (releasing a whole album of them) i doubt the company came up to her and said "cover this cat stevens song." what happened was an ad agent came across this b-side cover and gave her (and those ASCAP nazis)money to use it in this ad thats really not all that bad.

Guess what! Rumor has it that Chan is also the up and coming Chanel jewelry girl, and you know what, that doesn't bother me either.

Civil war in Sierra Leone is not a product of who sings what in a fucking Kay Jewelers commercial. Sorry guys, go find something else to pretend to care about. God knows all you're really worried about is Cat Power getting popular, making you less "special." Get off your high horses.

Sorry but I love Chan's version more than Steven's.

The way she sings the song is so lovely. Too bad she whored it off to a commercial. Nonetheless she still did a great cover.

Everyone should just back the fuck off. Its a beautiful song with a beautiful voice. Everything in this world is corrupt..so if you're gonna judge her we'll judge you. So just back off.

No high horses here, it's a pretty low standard to hold yourself to not selling your voice to promote a fucked up and horribly murderous industry. It's the entire gemstone business - not just diamonds here - that causes (and promotes) bloodletting on a magnificent scale. Anyone who needed to see a Blood Diamond preview to find that out is an idiot.

I hate this blog nerd shit anyways but here I go.Obviously you losers in computer wonderland dont know what its like to try to make a living as a musician.I would sing for a Sadam fucking Hussein commercial if it paid right.Who gives a shit about some tribal African war going on?If they were not fighting over diamonds it would be underwear or something else stupid because they are fucking APES people! WAKE UP and quit chastising Cat Power for making money, get the fuck off the computer crying, and do something about it if you care that much about apes and diamonds....Fucking Dipshits!
