Dude, It's A Devo-Penned Dell Ad

Although Devo's constituents haven't disappeared entirely since 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps (reunion shows in abundance, a re-recording of "Girl U Want" for the Tank Girl soundtrack, and Gerald Casale's culturally sensitive solo project Jihad Jerry & The Evildoers), there hasn't been a peep from them new music wise in 17 years. Until, of course, the Mother-New York ad agency coaxed them out of studio silence, getting the Akron, OH new wave icons to put "Whip It" (and especially "Swiff It") behind them in favor of the new tune "Work It" -- penned especially for Dell's new laptop campaign. Girls in wigs, computers, cowbells, this thing's got it all. But careful Devo, everybody knows what life after Dell looks like: pot arrests and tending bar in NYC.

Michael Dell has donated a tremendous amount of money to George W. Bush's various campaigns and to the Republican Party. Devo is now dead to me.

Remember Devo2.0, that Disney project with kids singing Devo classics? That CD had two new Devo-penned tunes ("Cyclops" and "The Winner", IIRC). Devo played the music for all the tracks, and the kids sang them. I only remember this because my kids LOVE LOVE LOVE that CD. And it sure beats listening to the #%^@#@ Wiggles, you know?

wasn't there an original DEVO song on the life aquatic soundtrack, or was that something older?

This is good.

Also, did you have to make fun of the poor Dell kid? There are worse jobs for a college student than bartending.

One thing I do know is that children love the Beatles, they are just crazy about them!

I'm surprised no one mentioned this nicely subversive spot the spudboys did for Honda Scooters back in 1984:

I remember this one well; I even saved some clippings of critics trying to "analyze" its content... "Choose a scooter that best expresses your individuality. There are many sizes and colors." HAR.

It's gross that they picked Dell, though. There are so many nasty things about that company. And this ad seems to lack the consumer critique implicit in the earlier spot.

Just saw this but how can you say Mark Mothersbaugh has done nothing music-wise in 17 years?!

DEVO 2.0 is truly the final nail in the Devo coffin. Unbelievable. Is everything I once loved going to be homogenized into mush by corporate America's blandness? R.I.P.
