Gorillaz Light The Olympic Torch For The BBC

thumbnail icon: Gorillaz Light The Olympic Torch For The BBC

Gorillaz guys Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn have put together a pretty sweet little promo clip for BBC Sports's Beijing Summer Olympic coverage. I'm not much of an Olympics fan, so maybe this trippy cartoon narrative -- based in part on Gorrillaz' (and Chen Shi-Zheng's) Monkey: Journey to the West -- will be the only lasting impression I have from the games. It doesn't seem very Olympic at first, but wait for the finale.

The Olympics start the same day as the Boredoms' 88 BoaDrum. Both are sponsored by Nike.

This makes me wish for a Gorillaz animated movie.

Wasn't Demon Days based somewhat off of the plot for that scraped film with Dreamworks?

Cool commercial. I wonder if danger mouse made that beat because he produced most of Demon Days.

I'd love to get that track, but I loved it even though it's only until the very end, like you mentioned you see some reference to the Olympics. I wish this show would come out in a larger release.

Umm, the whole piece had references to the Olympics, long jumping, pole vaulting, gymnastics, swimming, dashing, hurdles, etc. The mythological perils of the protagonists can be likened to the games-- plus the magic cloud could be equated to doping by less honorable athletes.

Chinese human rights abuses FTW!

Falun Dafa forever. The world will see the scam of the Olympics in China and this will be the worst one to date. The air is hardly breathable, and the food is poisoned even the American team is bringing their own cooks. Until China apologizes for atrocities against the Tibetans, and Falun Dafa amongst other, the world will see China as an outcast.

Did you recently hear that Chinese government was instructing bar owners to not allow blacks into their bars?

Classy move, China.

The clouds are a nod to China's Look of the Games.

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...
