Make Me A Target

Robert Schneider's no stranger to the graceful sell-out -- and it's 2007, so spare us the mock outrage -- but it is curious to see Target get all E6y on our asses. It's not just the aforementioned Apples In Stereo that have a song convincing you to buy low, low priced goods ("Go"); Beulah's "Silver Lining" is also collecting royalty checks cut from the Target Corporation. Can't find the YouTube links (anyone?), but maybe we'll do a commercial clip roundup when they make a Target out of Of Montreal. "Suffer For (Affordable) Fashion," perhaps? Don't be surprised.

I think it can't be helped anymore. I'm attending the Capitol Hill Block Party this weekend and it's sponsored by Esurance. Strangely enough, one of the most anti-consumerist bands ever, Against Me is hitting the mainstage tomorrow night warming things up for Spoon.

BTW, I'm psyched for Viva Voce and Silversun Pickups tonight.

Saving On Fashion Lyrics

We don't wanna go broke til we're dead
No need to suffer for fashion
or whatever
we dont' want these days to ever end
back to school savings can't last forever
forever, forever
get your jeans and fall/winter hats
'cause the seasons change just like that
just like that
just like that
just like that
we've got to keep it practical

Hello Kitty's stylish, okay
And Transformers' a hit, see
buy me whatever
there's a huge box in the layaway
startin' early for Christmas? You better!
You better!, You better!
You don't need big money rolls
Your dollar goes much farther at Kohl's!
Here at Kohl's!
Here at Kohl's!
Let's do it together!!

Bloc Party had a song on a Target Commercial a few years back -- 'Always New Depths', which never actually made it to any of their albums (despite being a pretty good song)

Also don't forget the Architecture in Helsinki on that Sprint commercial.

Final Fantasy also had song on an ad for a cell phone provider, although it was apparently an accident.

Of Montreal's selling out can even be forgiven by the fact that they put the money from it toward buying stage props for their upcoming tour.

elephant 6-era of montreal would have never recorded a song called "suffer for fashion"... so that's disqualified.

red house painters' "cabezon" was in a Target commercial a few years ago. it was really well done - not your standard Target design fare. this one had dialogue and was expertly edited.

No mention of the cover (probably recorded just for the commercial) of The Beatles' "Hello Goodbye" in the recent Target "good buy" commercial?

I don't care if it's common, I'm still bothered by Matthew Dear's "Deserter" in that Hummer ad, especially cause the song rules.

I've heard so many indie artists in commercials these days that I don't quite keep track of them as often as I used to.

So wait, "Rhthm & Soul" is about Marlon Brando, right?

EDIT: I also like that cell phone commercial that is using New Order's "Age Of Consent". Don't know which company it is though.
