If You Like of Montreal, Maybe You Will Also Like Comcast HD

thumbnail icon: If You Like of Montreal, Maybe You Will Also Like Comcast HD

If there's one thing of Montreal believe in, it's epic and fractured polysexual songs that nod to literature, dance music, and deeply melodic '70s styled glam jams. And if there's four things oM believe in, it's polysexual songs, steak, T-Mobile, and great HD service. Comcast has spruced up their bid to be your cable service provider with a quick clip of Hissing Fauna's "A Sentence Of Sorts In Kongsvinger." As you watch the spot, please keep in mind that selling out isn't possible, or at the very least, that horse feed does not pay for itself. The spot also features the guy who used to play faux-Jimmy Fallon on 30 Rock, so if you've been missing actor Lonny Ross this one is also for you:

Via Videogum. And chase that with this great Kevin Barnes profile in the New Yorker. Or the inauguration of President Obama. Your choice.

Yeah, I noticed started seeing that commercial about a week ago, and all I could think was "The hipsters will not be pleased."

This is hardly selling out. I mean, it's not like Kevin Barnes is allowing Comcast to take advantage of the emotional connection between the fans and his music. I'm pretty sure hipsters and teens aren't Comcast's target demographic. All they're doing is playing a snippet of a happy, feel-good song that should create the happy, feel-good emotions necessary to even think about giving Comcast your money.

Wait, we're saying THIS is selling out? The guy already let Outback change the lyrics of an Of Montreal song to sell the bloomin' onion and mediocre steaks... by his own standards, this commercial was practically an act of rebellion, no?

Kevin has stated in many interviews recently that he doesn't care what his fans think - he doesn't make music for them, he makes it for himself only (this has also been confirmed by bandmate James Husband). Which is in lock step with his overall elevated self-centered self-importance.

Huh, I don't know much about the guy but I noticed that about him.

I'm beginning to think Kevin Barnes and Billy Corgan would be best friends if they ever got together.

They're both pretentious snobs, they both want to sell their songs to everything possible and still be seen as the absolute pinnacle of artistry, and both love to attack and degrade their fans if those fans happen to disagree with them in the slightest. Seriously, read KB's "Selling Out Isn't Possible" letter and BC's "I Want to be Nickelback" interview back to back. They are like 2 parts to one big dickhead manifesto.

This commercial has been on the air for like a week(?) The song is understated, a snippet... not made to bother anyone at all.

Now, if we pause and think of "Let's go Outback tonight!" or The Moldy Peaches' Atlantis ad... now that's simply whoring yourself out for the lowest price possible and giving it away without a condom for no extra price at all. To me, that's the wrong way to make an extra buck, it ends up ruining the song for the fans.

Also, I heard Lykke Li's I'm Good I'm Gone on Fox's Fringe promo spot (that show is awesome!!!!)

People who care about whether a band sells a couple of their songs are massive tools. Who cares?

And to those who say that Barnes doesn't care about his fans: has anyone read his interviews about Skeletal Lamping? He's basically said that he made the album in order to prove to fans that he didn't "sell out." If he didn't care about the fans, then he wouldn't have made a point to say this

You got it almost right. He wrote the music to prove he isn't a sellout, but not for the fans... he did that to prove it to himself.

this raises an important question: who pays for music these days, the fan or the ad agency? after all, someone's gotta pay for that elaborate stage set

Yeah SOOOOO greedy! Sorry a guy makes good music that other people like! Also! guess what??!! Unlike most you uppity assholes maybe... just maybe... Barnes would like to pay for his rent and be able to make music? Oh and maybe give his kid a college fund.
