Apes & Androids @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC 2/28/08

Apes & Androids @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC 2/28/08

By Amrit Singh
I don't get around to posting all the shows I see, and I came close to sitting on these pictures because little's changed about how much I love A&A during the weeks we've had Apes & Androids' scary good debut Blood Moon in Heavy Rotation. Or since I launched the post with a thousand band references after their CD release show at Mercury in January. But I flipped through the shots of their Thursday show at Hiro again this weekend and realized this could be the pic spread that convinces those of you outside NYC to see them at all costs when they finally tour. A&A always up the ante (Movable Hype had the Japanese taiko drum line during "Hot Kathy," Halloween was Thriller, Merc was just your standard extraterrestrial Ziggy-styled future-glam attire). This time's eye candy came via bodysuited girls wearing masks and doing choreographed moves to "We Don't Understand You."

Confetti guns were involved, too, all of which gave the night a delirious sheen just four songs in. Also, glowsticks were passed around, and that looked like this:

The crowd was a weird mix of hipsters, beat-seekers, and Hiro trash. Unsurprisingly all appeared to lost their shit in equal parts, which is a sensible response to the pop-is-eating-itself crew's anthems and going-on-legendary live show. The one attendee I couldn't figure was the girl standing in front of me with a 12" feather extending laterally from her hat and into my eye. Blinding fashion sense, yes, but then I realized her inspiration:

The Jerk's a great movie, carry on feather girl. Although now you have to get one for your dog, too. Some MP3s:

Buy it here. Seriously.

Not Japanese taiko drums; it was Korean drums. Sheeesh. I guess our drums look alike too.
