Austin City Limits '07: Hot Freaks! Afterparties (Grizzly Bear, Art Brut, The Rosebuds, Sparrow House, St. Vincent)

After navigating the throngs of Fest folks looking for transportation from Zilker Park (pedicabs were the order of the weekend, though we had good cab karma), downtown afterparty options were plentiful. But few were free, and fewer still exclusively featured ACL-neglected artists; that's where our friends in blogging come in, having curated the second Hot Freaks! party, at the Mohawk 'n' Club De Ville on Red River. Night One: Two Ed-heads for the price of nothing! We got to the show Friday night in time for Grizzly Bear, playing against Club De Ville's man-made Red Rocks-y backdrop. The set also yielded the "most random thing ever" sighting in the words of Mr. Droste: There to see Grizz were Brandon Flowers and the rest of the Killers! And according to those who chatted 'em up, B. Flow left impressed. Make of all that what you will, we still don't know what to say.

After that came Art Brut, whose set reminded us that Eddie Argos is the best standup comedian in rock, particularly in his piss take of the night's unavoidable sponsor, Dell, after having his mic cut a few times:

I hope Dell didn't make this microphone, because it's failed the durability test. It's failed several times and is giving me shocks. Which is not nice. And also confuses me. That's what happened to Lou Reed, actually ... so perhaps by the end of this set I'll be a little more like Lou Reed?
Probably not Argos ... maybe a little more like Mitch Hedberg?

Ventured back the next night, too, for first times with Sparrow House (aka Jared Van Fleet of Voxtrot) 'n' the Rosebuds and another night with St. Vincent. Left particularly impressed with Sparrow House and the great Saint: Jared's gentle, Soof-y vox 'n' semi-hollowbody fingerpicking was a perfectly mellow way to come down from the ACL racket, while Annie's bewitching, twitchy rock and piano-ballad proposals came complete with full band accompaniment, revving us back up before bedtime for one last day of the Zilker mob.

Great to spend time with our friends at An Aquarium Drunkard, La Blogothèque, Brooklyn Vegan, Chromewaves, Gorilla Vs. Bear, My Old Kentucky Blog, and You Ain't No Picasso, and congrats on a stellar show and lineup. Thanks for the hospitality, and especially for having us wear those cute glow-in-the-dark party bracelets all weekend. We'll cherish them always.

I don't get what the big deal is about Flowers being at a Grizzly Bear show - is it hard to believe that someone like him might have good taste in music? That being said, I have doubts about his taste in music considering he was seen at a Grizzly Bear show.

And I think Art Brut get's too much praise for being a run-of-the-mill Brit pop band, albeit one with a horribly unlistenable "frontman".
