Band Of Horses @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC 6/16/06

The word is out on Band of Horses, kids. The Sub Poppers packed the fans (and the chatty Friday night drunks) into Bowery for a disparately received set. If you went in thinking "My Morning Jacket meets Built to Spill, with extra reverb," the set did nothing to dissuade. Still, "The Funeral" grabbed us for a few, and covering Hall & Oates's "You Make My Dreams" will always get Stereogum's attention.

But the fun really started before BoH even took the stage. As we settled into our beverages in the balcony, a blaring white light seared our retinas. Crass conversation assaulted our ears. Near the bar stood two slicked-up dudes with smug grins, incessant hand slaps and an attentive camera crew. "Indie Rockers Gone Wild?" Even worse: The Rolling Stone Intern reality show! They did a good job spending the night being obnoxious (and being teased).

Choice quote of the evening, from prospective RS intern to curious BoH fan: "Yeah, cameras following you around can be annoying. But it pays off. Usually in vagina." Way to class up the joint, Rolling Stone.

The douchebag quotient was also sky-high at BoH's Maxwell's show on Saturday night. They played a great set, but it was essentially negated by the little fights that kept popping up in the crowd and lots of incessant chatting/cell phone conversatin'. This just in: New Jersey still sucks.

Ugh, I can't believe that guy said that. Is the internship for a secretarial position? If it's a writing internship, I guess that would explain why RS has gone to shit lately.

I don't think they did play St.Augustine... I don't remember it being played.
I was a bit distracted by the blinding camera lights and skirt chasing though.
Those guys were some dude-bros if I've ever seen dude-bros...

"My Morning Jacket meets Built to Spill, with extra reverb,"

with some heavy neil young too. but I guess if you have BTS, you're covered.
was kinda shocked there were so many chatty cathys there, esp for such a big hyped band as this.
when did they do H&O? I totally don;t remember that - and i only had like 2 beers.

Wow...honestly, does anyone actually use "vagina" in that context anymore. Better question: did anyone EVER use it that way? "Pussy" or "ass", maybe, but not vagina. Clearly he'd be better off as a medical student than a journalist.

Went to their nj show. the weed party song, funeral, and the H&O cover was good. The rest was ZZzzzzz. Wish they covered Maneater too.

don't you think Sub Pop and the band agreed to have video camera's there for the exposure?

I wonder when one of these bands will cover Public Enemy's "Don't Believe the Hype" and the blogs think it's IRONIC

i caught them at alchemize in cincinnati (a town full of douchebags) and thought they rocked. Tough as it may be, see past the crowd and the fact that "the word is out" - these guys put on a scorching show.

that being said, a camera crew would have to be uber annoying.

Hey management-- Maybe it is BoH audience that sucks, not Jersey. Don't go hating on one of the best venues in the area to see a show.
