Band To Watch: 120 Days

Actually, it'll be less than 120 days for these young electro-rock noise-droners to conquer the States. Recently gobbled up by Vice (and the first Norwegian act signed directly to an American label), 120 Days are slated for their first shows in NYC September 17-24. Expect a big push. The writers (and A&R folks) at Øya were frantically searching for this year's Serena-Maneesh (a tall order, if you're hip to the awesomeness that is Serena), but -- of the many (many) Norwegian acts I took in this weekend -- these guys were among the few well-prepped for trans-Atlantic travels.

Big buzz on them in Oslo, too; I was repeatedly told not to miss their secret, fifteen-minute set at the Fabrikken club on Thursday night where they played their "weirder, drone-based stuff." I loved those sounds (somewhere between Underworld and Kraftwerk), and was generally impressed by their Festival set the next day (where they introduced the Bono element). Lots more coverage and features from Øya soon. In the meantime, dig on 120 Days' lead single.

120 Days - "Come Out (Come Down, Fade Out, Be Gone)" (MP3)

The track develops deliberately, with waves of washy, lustrous synths, droning bass and well-timed returns to the hypnotic, seven-note grouping that serves as motif. And at nine minutes, you have plenty of time to decide if you like it.

120 Days out 10/10/07. (Even more time to decide if you like it.)

To me it sounds like a cross between Kasabian and Jan Hammer. Am I nuts to think that this song should have been in the new Miami Vice movie somewhere?

"Instantly, I liked their sound. Am now eager for the CD. Thanx, Stereogum!"

This is a brilliantly awesome comment. I will now be reposting it under every future entry on this blog. Because marketing reps work hard enough as it is.

I hate to be sippin' on the haterade, but this shit is bland. Someone needs to confiscate their "O," faces and instruments.

I like it, but don't know how an album's worth could possibly be entertaining. The Pitchfork seemed to like it though, gave it a great track review.

After reading PFork's splooge-in-the-form-of-words, I'll hate this song no matter what.

This "lopsided parabola" is dead to me.

not bad....it sounds like 98-99ish Phish jams...with bono on vocals....and not as cool drums. But I bet the live show is something else.

This band is amazing. I have their two EPs, and I've seen them live several times over the past few years. Come Out (Come Down, Fade Out, Be Gone) works pretty well live as well, but it's when they add guitars to the mix it really takes off. Just listen to So This Is Suicide on their myspace.

Band sounds pretty interesting to me. Hard to dismiss guys who are just getting started. Wish I had been in Oslo to check out the scene - its a wonderful place

120 Days are pretty good. I'm not a fan of every song, but the majority of them are solid. Sort of Joy Division/New Order-ish, but hey, who isn't these days. "So This Is Suicide" is a great song. Love the bass in all their songs. Anyone know where I can purchase Beautiful People EP?
