Be Your Own Pet @ Mercury Lounge, NYC 2/20/08

Exactly a month ago BYOP let us in on what was in store with Get Awkward (more Karen O, more raucousness, more bruising young garage punk jams -- just aged a bit), and last night Stereogum photog Abbey Braden hit their early hours NYC show on Houston St. and walked out impressed, noting "they really are maturing but still definitely kids. Jemima pushed a dude into the drumkit too and he fell over -- I think one year in her life is like 7 in ours. She's a bad ass bitch." Don't take her word for it, though; take her video for it. Here's the debut's "Bicycle, Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle":

For new stuff, find "Becky" after the jump.

Yep, imagine after seeing that you'll want to know about these tour dates.

Yeah, they were pretty awesome. The drummer looks like he's 13, actually how old is he? Maybe he is 13.

Did anyone catch the opening act, Radio America? They were pretty awesome as well.

I was there...

Jemima went on a rant about her badassedness and how she's been kicked out of Nashville bars because of that. She asked the crowd if they wanted to fight. People shouted and this random guy at at least twice her size got on stage. There was witty banter that no one in the audience (except maybe the front row) could hear but it was pretty obvious that Jemima didn't hear what the dude was saying to her.

The slap came after the guy leaned over to her to (at least on the opinion of myself and people I was with) say something in her ear because it was loud and noisey. I guess she thought he was trying to kiss her or something.

After the dude was slapped he made a few steps back and paused for a bit, probably in shock or wonder as to why he got slapped.

Then it got awkward...

The dude walked over to Jemima and tried to give her the "it's cool" appology hug/dry hump/take the mic or something that was clearly going to be mis-interpreted.

She shoved him right as his hands got near her. And in an effort to protect their bandmate the 3 men IN THE BAND instantly jumped toward the man to get him away from Jemima. Loverboy was pushed back and fell into the drumkit effectively pissing off the drummer.

Then after about 10-20 seconds of awkwardness (that seemed like minutes). Loverboy got up and slumped off stage leaving the rest of the band to play their next song.

It was more awkward than a "badass punk rock chick" moment going down. Probably the fault of both parties.

The entire altercation lasted about a minute.

Moral of the Story: Don't be on stage unless you are in the band...and don't be a crowd douche.

Of all the bands that are in Nashville, I am surprised this one has gotten the opportunities it has gotten. I think that Paper Rival is such a better band.

They get great tours, gigs, whatever because the lead singers father is an A&R for a major label. They are really horrible. I seen them at SXSW in 2006 and kind of felt sorry for them because everyone there was mocking them. I guess its just not cool when 15 year old kids throw their equipment around and just scream. They"ll be more respectable when they are in their 20's doing that shit. But maybe not

The original members' parents are well-connected music execs. This band is tailored to fit a certain mold.

Don't know what was going on that night, but yesterday they played at Maxwell's in Hoboken and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to.

I was there too and and can't help but feel that the guy was set up a little. Personally, I could give two shits if the band has connections. Connections will only get you so far and it doesn't change the fact that Jemima has an amazing voice and stage presence.

What I really wanted to say was in relation to Radio America... the first 15 mins of their show was surprisingly good. Not so sure the whole ska/reggae sound is their thing but they've got some catchy guitar driven tunes. I considered buying their CD until their lead singer started to act like a pretentious asshole. After about 20 minutes on stage he used the excuse of being hot to take off his shirt and show off his rather scrawny frame. Come on, was this his first live show...he couldn't hold out for another 15 minutes??

I'm also guessing that name dropping (really, Ryan Adams?), insulting his band mates, and throwing things at them isn't going to take this guy too far. If he wants to be a bad ass rock star I suggest getting a lesson from Jemima.
