Coachella: Rage Fans Didn't Like Crowded House
Like the Jesus & Mary Chain, Crowded House got their "unofficial" reunion show out of the way at Glass House on 4/27, where they joked about expecting a hostile crowd of mainly Rage reunion seekers. Prescient thought, 'cause despite taking the Coachella Stage a full three hours before RATM's headlining set, the crowd was NOTHING but Zach and Morello fans. Nothing. And as they joked at Glass House, the kids were gonna be in the mood to throw things.

Felt bad for the Brothers Finn; their obvious enthusiasm on stage (this was their big reunion show, after all) was met with utter indifference from the dehydrated and impatient crowd. Worse yet, from our vantage point, it didn't quite seem like Crowded House understood just how much of the audience wanted them off immediately (i.e. 100%).
When the opening guitar of their smash "Don't Dream It's Over" rung out, we looked around, frantically; would any of these kids respond, even in passing recognition of the tune? And they responded alright. With a water bottle straight to Neil Finn's head! What followed just compounded Neil's embarrassment: He was rattled, the band audibly contemplated aborting the song, but Finn felt for sure he could rely, at least during this one song, on the crowd picking up the slack by singing along. "It's alright, everybody! Come on!" Neil waved the crowd on to sing the legendary hook.
And ... nothing. By this point we were far back into the crowd, and you had to be there to appreciate just how thunderous this silence was.
Absolutely the most embarrassing moment of the fest. But for closure's sake, and to bury the dagger deeper in the Finns' chest, toward set's end Crowded House said, "Soon Rage will be on" -- and the otherwise silent crowd roared to life. Coachella, ya might not wanna book two such disparate reunions so close together next time. But it'd take more than bottle-wielding Rage fans to stop us from singing along to "Something So Strong," even if our friends had a little fun changing the hook to "...could hit me in the face."

Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan in the crowd? Crowd full of bottle throwing mooks who probably own multiple Limp Bizkit albums?
All signs point to Coachella jumping the shark. It's a shame.

Crowded House isn't my favorite, but they don't deserve that kind of treatment. What was Coachella thinking when they booked them, anyway?

The inevitable march toward lameness: Lollapalooza, now Coachella (strange that such a political band like Rage attracts a 97% meathead fanbase). Can't wait for Pitchfork Festival 2010 when a reunited Limp Bizkit plays three hours after a reunited Stone Roses, and Ian Brown has to cut the set short after being shot 27 times by Limp Bizkit fans.

I've always thought RATM sucked. Apparently, their fans do also. I don't know why it's such a shock that so many of their fans would be Limp Bizkit style frat boy douchebags. RATM is one of the pioneers of the unholy alliance between well crafted rock and ridiculously subpar rhymes. I imagine people that listen to that type of stuff probably travel in packs. Huge, bottle throwing, women raping packs.

A example of excellent programming on the part of the festival.

I bet that wouldn't have happened if Audioslave headlined!
Seriously, too bad for CH. They deserved a better reception than that. But sensitive, well-crafted melodic pop as a lead-in to aggressive, anarchistic (in a conformist, frat-boy type of way) nu-Metal-Rap -Rock really was a disaster waiting to happen.

I blame niche marketing for this. This wouldn't have happened in the 60s, because the audience was just one big subcultural mush, not a bunch of little duchies convinced of the "realness" of their particular invented suburban culture. But you can move a lot more product if people really think it's made for them personally.

> The crowd was not silent!
Guess it depended on where you were standing? I was up front for a few songs and heard nothing but "We want Rage!" chants (Finn replied "They're coming soon...") -- AND I took a wayward water bottle to the back (which felt refreshing after it opened up and soaked me). Moved deeper into the crowd for "Don't Dream It's Over," and the bottle-smack/botched sing along made me wince in empathy. But they held it well. And as the Glass House vid showed, at least they knew it was coming!

Listening to the soundboard mix audio on the streaming webcast, there were plenty of cheers for the Crowdies, but it was clear that there were a core of Rage fans at the front of the stage (chanting Rage! Rage! Rage! ad nauseum). And chucking bottles. Agreed CH were probably at the wrong stage at the wrong time, but still.
I rather presume that none of those chanting, bottle-chucking, unable-to-grap-the-irony-of-their-behaviour RATM fans are likely to be changing the world in any sort of positive way in the near future.

The Retards Against the Machine were also spouting their half-assed political views, which are always good for a laugh. This time it was that every US Administration that the Retards don't like (I think they said, every one since Truman) should be "shot." To diss a band as important as Rage Against the Machine simply because some of their fans act in an undeniably stupid manner is ridiculous.
I hate Limp Bizkit and the legions of nu-metal-rap metal bands that (poorly) attempted to cash in on Rage's sound. Remember, when Rage first appeared, there was no other band putting heavy riffs together with political lyrics sung by a hip hop vocalist (except Anthrax and Public Enemy's 'Bring the Noise,' but that was a one off.)
Give Rage the credit they deserve, even if you don't care for the music. At least they're saying something socially important with their music.

As noted, "behaviour" is just fine in most English-speaking parts of the world - Don't rush to judge, lest you embarass yourself with your parochial views.
As for irony, I find it somehwat ironic that a bunch of RATM fans would act like jerks in their impatience to hear songs of righteous anger ostensibly in service of goals of respect and inclusion. I guess they forgot about the respect and inclusion part. I also find it deeply ironic hearing about 60,000 fans singing in unison the lyrics to songs about non-conformity. Clearly it is time for a reissue of the Life of Brian.

And i agree it was a poor choice to schedule these 2 bands together in such quick procession. Also i am very disappointed in some of the rage fans, but i know the type and well its just a shame they like rage. I would have thought perhaps Zach or may have said something about it when he cam eon stage (but i guess they were going for that big impact reunion of not speaking besides an introduction). But for what it's worth, Crowded House's music has aged well; Neil Finn's solo albums are totally worth listening too; lastly a Neil Finn dvd came out in 2001 or 2002 featuring Johnny Marr, members of radiohead, eddie vedder, etc. that sounds great. I'm generally not huge fan of older bands playing past their prime, but Finn's voice remains solid. I'm not a kiwi either

I traveled from DC to Coachella to see both Crowded House and Rage, and was totally let down. There was a very dark vibe in my part of the crowd...no recognition of Neil and the boys at all...just boredom and impatience. Must hand it to Neil though that he tried to keep things on track, but after the bottle-to-the-head, the wind was most definitely out of his sails. The saddest part for me was when he basically dropped his guitar on the stage and stepped up to the mic one last time, saying something like "just give me one second to really take a look at you and burn this into my memory...it's an image I won't soon forget"...or words to that effect. Then he walked off. Very depressing. I left. I really wanted to see Rage, but not with that crowd...far too hostile imho. On another note, did anyone else experience the near riot in the campground the evening before? A bunch of cop cars and a police helicopter called in to calm down the wild bunch? A very surreal night indeed. Had a few hundred guys getting really ugly (I heard the word Altamont spoken a few times, and something about torching tents), and singing in unison...of all things "Wish you were here" by Pink Floyd, who wrote the song before these concert-goers were even born. Again...surreal. I figured that the Meth had finally arrived...

Explosions in the Sky, The Roots, Willie Nelson, Crowded House, Manu Chao, RATM...while others may think it an odd and even disasterous combination, I watched them all and I think the main stage offered fabulous diversity and great performances. I am a big fan of most of these bands, yes, both Crowded House and RATM. It's a real shame that more people aren't more open about their musical tastes - if you can't be at very least tolerant, and hopefully appreciative, of musical diversity, how can you be so of other forms of diversity? The bottle-throwing idiot and some of the inane comments on this page exemplify just how closed-minded and intolerant our society really is. Crowded House is one hell of a class act - it's too bad more people don't take to heart the values of love and respect they engender. It's sad, sad world we live in...

What a load of stereotypying rubbish going on in this thread.
Clearly the reaction of the crowd was not as bad as it's been painted. And as a rage fan since day one the way they are painted is ignorant nonsense.
Don't make broad generalisations about something you know nothing about, just because you don't like their music.
They attract people who are into their music for the raw aggressiveness but to call their fans pack "rapists" makes you a total and utter dork.

Man, I bought the tickets for Bjork, and I won't lie, the Rage reunion sealed the deal for me on the subject of whether or not to do all three days, but on Saturday night when all the Rage fiends started showing up, things really began going downhill out there. There were so many sweet bands, it was a real shame to find out that the fans of Rage were the type to be such pricks about everything. When that water bottle hit, I racked my brain trying to think of the lyrics to that Crowded House song. That just wasn't fair. There were some Australian kids behind me with a big fucking flag screaming along though, so at least somebody was there to try and help. Rage fans ruined the Rage reuinion for me, sadly, and others too apparently. Suck it, bonehead Rage kids.

But then these comments have given me hope that not all of the people there were as disrepectful and childish as those people were. Seriously, bottle thowing is something I would expect from the middle schoolers at Warped Tour who think Fall Out Boy is not punk enough for them.
How much were Cochella tickets anyway? And how many people paid for transportation to and from there as well? One can only hope that the sun and heat exhaustion was to blame for these people's immature reactions.

I wouldn't expect anything else. The same thing happens every time a fairly diverse festival pulls off a bit of a coup in signing a big metal band (usually Metallica and Tool in my experience).
This usually attracts a vast majority of their fans who don't know any music apart from metal, and are into it because of some kind of image problem or macho/homophobic tendency. "Man Crowded House are so gay, what pussies".
On the other hand, fans of other genres are usually more accepting to bands from totally different backgrounds and styles.

RATM are one of the most influencial bands ever to exist. Their lyrics and powerful riffs explode through thier CD's and live shows. As a massive Rage fan i was devistated to not be able to attend this show, as i live in Australia. I agree the fact that Crowded House don't deserve to be hit by bottles, but i can guarentee if you go to any rock concert these days bottles are thrown all over the place. It doesnt matter who the fans are. These artists must know there is a risk that this will happen. Don't single out Rage Against The Machine fans as disgusting 'women raping'....i mean seriously women raping??? Rage promotes equal rights to women...infact to everyone. So don't say that as a fan i walk around raping women, because i find that quite insulting. And think about how you would be acting if you had been waiting for 7 years to see your favourite band. You might do some stupid stuff too. Rage Against The Machines music has a power behind it, that i have never felt from another band. I can only hope that they do return to Australia so i can experience what thousands of people at Coachella were privledged to experience. I LOVE THEM!

Personally I think the CH management should never have allowed CH to go on a bill with Rage fans. They could have selected a much more suitable bill or festival. After all CH are massive in Australia/NZ and big in the UK but not so popular in the US.
So where do CH do their big reunion concert?
In the US, on a bill with a band whose fans were probably between 6-15 when CH split up 10 years ago. This was a terrible boo-boo on on behalf of the bands management. Crowded House deserved a much better reception for their first 'big' reunion show.

Dear Foster,
To answer your first question, Crowded House are (were?) one of the finest Ausssie/NZ bands of the 80s/90s and they have written many a fantastic hook and lyric. Their messages have been many and varied, but have included the political, albeit slightly more subtly political than those of RATM. More often, their lyrics include thought provoking messages on life itself and the human condition.
Secondly, it's great to hear that you're so well informed when it comes to RATM's message, and that you distance yourself from those "band wagon idiots" who only want a "deomocrat in the white house". I trust you've been reading up on anarchist socialism and the like on wikipedia in between playing World Of Warcraft and sucking down Coke. Good luck with your violent revolution, I'm sure people will sit up and notice if you preach to them IN CAPITAL LETTERS COS THAT'S BOUND TO GET YOU TAKEN SERIOUSLY!
Good Day, hope I helped. :-)
