David Vandervelde/Spoon @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC 4/23/07

Spoon slid into Bowery last night for an expectedly excellent "secret show" (which sold-out soon after going on sale, so yes, very secret), knocking out 17 of your favorites and five cuts from the incredibly titled Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. It was our second stint with "Don't You Evah" and "Don't Make Me A Target," (the latter sounding punchier than before) and our first with the likes of "They Never Got You" and its jammy, two-chord vamp. Couldn't see much of the audience's reactions (we chose close pics over birds-eye viewing), but friends complained of a tepid crowd. On a Monday night at Bowery? That's how these things go, sadly. Shouldn't reflect on the Britt band's set, though; the reigning kings of consistency were crisp and taut, if a shade off the superior.

The night also gave us a long overdue look at artist to watch David Vandervelde & The Moonhouse Station Band, turning heads with manic lead guit, a searing take on the Rolling Stones' "Cocksucker Blues" and a raucous rendition of David's Bolan-friendly single "Nothin' No."

Anyway, here's Britt doing his eye-contact-and-smile thing.

More pics and Spoon setlist love after the jump.

Saw David Vandervelde live, have to say, he's got some wicked guitar chops. Fast (30 min. tops) but furious live set, some of the songs are really juiced and don't have the same vibe as the record....either way, album cut or live, he's got some skills.

"They Never Got You" is on GIMME FICTION, guys -- not a new song. But yeah, it was a great show -- however, J'ACCUSE all of you who were standing still during "Jonathon Fisk"! I mean, WTF?

...Unless I'm misreading that sentence and it's meant to indicate you'd just never seen them play it live before. But still, clarity! ;-)

there was very little to nothing off of girls can tell. i know the record is 3 back, and 5+ years old, but I love those songs too.

I saw Vandervelde the night before at Pianos - again, a cool set from him. My take here:

I found David Vandervelde to be a little too Blues Hammer-esque for my tastes.

hey a -
you got me there. I guess because I didn't hear Anything You Want and the line about my favorite record store from college, sound exchange, my memory canceled hearing the 3 you pointed out.
anyone know what's opened up where sound exchange was, now that the baja fresh has closed?

i had the same thought during vandervelde's set about the unfortunate similarity to Blues Hammer

Josef,
there's nothing there now. it's been empty for almost a year now. luckily johnston's frog thing is still there though so that's good.

is it just me, or does Britt Daniel look alarmingly like Vincent Schiavelli in that first photo? Also, why do I keep having dirty dreams about Britt? Is it the whole fucking a ghost thing? Someone explain this to me, I certainly don't get it.
