DeVotchKa @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC 6/24/06

Everywhere we looked Friday night was a happy couple. Maybe DeVotchKa's for lovers? Nick's impassioned croon can certainly set a mood, and there's something undeniably romantic underlying these gypsyish jaunts. With a popped bottle of Cristal and a nylon-string guitar to get that theremin wooing, Urata led a band of violin, double bass and a red string-light coiled sousaphone through a loving and lovely Saturday night set. And let's face it, nothing says mariachi dance-folk like mermaids. Precisely why six of 'em donned accordians and joined the band at set's end. And precisely when our camera battery died. Hey, at least we managed to snap these!

Feel the love on DeVotchKa's killer cover of Siouxsee and the Banshees.

DeVotchKa - "The Last Beat Of My Heart" (MP3 Link Expired)

You can also grab their take on VU's "Venus In Furs" from their Curse Your Little Heart EP right here, courtsey of Ace Fu. Pitchfork was impressed, for what it's worth. Does DeVotchKa In Covers do it for you?

Do you have any more pictures you can post? I was at the show, right up against the stage, but alas, no camera. Your pictures came out great!!

what a show. and norfolk & western was the best part, in my opinion. the link behind my name has a little review.

Devotchka in Covers don't really do it for me, as I much prefer their original stuff. That said, the coverscome off much better live than on the EP. I'd recommend How It Ends for anybody just starting out on their material.

I've got more photographs on my site. The accordion mermaids were actually members of the Main Squeeze Orchestra, wearing costumes from that day's Mermaid Parade.

this show was magnificent-- and i think the EP is gorgeous. the band leaves their fingerprint on the songs without distorting the original greatness-- and in the case of "last beat," i agree with pfork-- makes it even better!! go devotchka!!

devotchka were amazing. haven't seen an indie rock crowd dance and cheer and clap like that in, well, I don't know. more than anything else, refreshingly to actually have a great time- dancing and all, at a show.
