Harry Potter And The Deathly Cyclone
Did you spend Saturday with eyes glued to The Deathly Hallows? Or ears glued to The Black Lips? We did neither, but these folks managed to do both:

(Pic by Paul Antonson.)
Yep, no Siren for Stereogum. Not 'cause the line-up was so much weaker than years past (well, maybe a little); we've just had our fill of most of the performers for the year. We know some of you went, though! Fill us in: Did Lavender Diamond's operatic pop rise above the Cyclone screams? Did Twilight Sad cover Radiohead? Did Voxtrot rail against music bloggers? Does Harry die at the end?
After the jump, some video clips that do little to convince us we missed anything spectacular.
Voxtrot - "Kid Gloves"
Cursive - "Art Is Hard"
M.I.A. "10 Dollar"
We Are Scientists - "Nobody Move Nobody Get Hurt"
New York Dolls "Personality Crisis"

i'm sure she wants revenge was missed, but i'd say that's one of the best lineups the festival's had in years. not many of them thrill me, but i'd like to see almost all of them.

ugh. the line-up was lame.
it's always too hot.

too many hipsters wearing budweiser t-shirts.

HOGWARTS
LV and Death Eaters take over Ministry, and reopen Hogwarts with Snape as headmaster.
HORCRUXES
Harry & crew decide not to attend Hogwarts, but instead travel over England to destroy the remaining Horcruxes.
3. Slytherin’s locket, taken from Umbridge in the Ministry
4. Hufflepuff’s Cup, robbed from Gringotts with a goblin’s help
5. Ravenclaw’s Diadem, from the Room of Requirement
6. Nagini, beheaded by Neville with Gryffindor’s sword
7. Harry’s scar, an incomplete horcrux that LV fucked up
HALLOWS
The Hallows consist of three objects used to evade death (as alternatives to the evil Horcruxes):
1. The Elder Wand, whose wielder wins every duel
2. The Resurrection Stone, used to bring people back to life
3. The Invisibility Cloak
DUMBLEDORE
Albus Dumbledore was a half-blood from Godric’s Hollow. He was childhood friends with Grindelwald, who also sought these Hallows; together, they were plotting to get them and take over the world “for the greater good.” He also had a sickly sister, who supposed “Squib,” whom he neglected and later died. Like LV, he once wanted to take over the world, to conquer death. LV murdered countless people and made Horcruxes, while Dumbledore searched far and wide to unite the Hallows with Grindelwald. However, the main difference between the two is that Dumbledore later felt remorse: he defeated Grindelwald after his sister’s death (caused by his own neglect, and perhaps his own wand) and realized that what he was doing was wrong. This is the reason he never became Minister of Magic despite having been asked several times.
SNAPE
Was obsessed with Harry’s mother as a child, but broke up after he called her a Mudblood. Asked LV to spare her in exchange for Harry. When this failed, promised Dumbledore he would protect Harry at all times. His Patronus was the Silver Doe who led Harry to Gryffindor’s sword. Dies when LV orders Nagini to kill him. Dumbledore’s death was planned in advance to trick LV into getting the Elder Wand.
THE FINAL BATTLE
Harry defeats LV by deflecting his killing curse back at him (Expelliarmus) when all his Horcruxes have been destroyed.
DEATHS
LV, Snape, Lupin/Tonks, Wormtail, Bella, Moody, Dobby, Ted Tonks, Fred, Crabbe, Hedwig, Rufus Scrimgeour, Colin Creevey, Bathilda, Charity (Muggle Studies teacher), Nagini, Gregorovitch (wandmaker), for a grand total of 18
EPILOGUE
1. Harry has 3 kids with Ginny named James, Lily, and Albus.
2. Ron has 2 kids with Hermione named Rose and Hugo.
3. Malfoy has a kid named Scorpius
4. Hagrid is still alive
5. Neville becomes Herbology professor

Tonks/Lupin die, Dumbledore killed his cripple sister.
What the setlists?
Snape dies like a little girl, the doe patronus is his.
Was the food any good? The ambience?
Harry is a horcrux, is killed by Voldemort, comes back to life, and then kills Voldemort. He marrys ginny and has three kids.

No wonder you guys aren't convinced- you missed the hilariousness of Lavender Diamond, who is unbelievably out of place in New York on a slightly chilly day at five o' clock in the afternoon in her 70's sundress.
Also, White Rabbits were incredible, and I think if they hadn't had the earliest time slot possible (1:30) they would have won over a lot of new fans with their energetic performance. They manage to pour such an amazing mix of styles and genres into their music, along with two great lead vocalists... I'm biased because I was already a fan of theirs leading into the show, but I left even more impressed.
Still... even at about six o'clock there were simply way too many people, and if you hadn't parked yourself in front of one stage or the other at 5:00, you didn't have a chance of seeing Voxtrot or We Are Scientists at a very close range. This was especially a problem at the main stage for Scientists, as the sound system was really pretty awful.
Still... there are worse ways to kill your time than free music, so all in all, I'd say Siren was a success.

Saw so many copies of 'Harry Potter and the Thing That Did Stuff' over this past weekend.
So, people waited in huge lines 'til midnight for something they could've easily picked up ANYwhere (even the local supermarket!) the following day??

M.I.A's set was plagued with technical difficulties but still fun none the less. The girlies love her. Mr. Iha was also seen bobbing his her during her set. A woman jumped on stage and was carried off by a security guard she was exchanging words with earlier.

Thats pathetic.. just stay home if you want to read. That said, it doesn't look like they were missing anything exciting. I didn't go this.. what did everyone else think?

Even I've read the book, but missing the Black Lips for that shit, that's weak.

Where's the story about Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys and the Hungarian Horntails playing Harvard Square?

DEATHLY CYCLONE INDEED!
Do people normally get bruises from the Cyclone "safety" bars???

I really have enjoyed Voxtrot's new album. It took me more than a few listens but I'm sure glad I gave it a third and fourth listen. There are some very complex songs on it.
I agree with Srivastava in that most people don't bother giving an album more than 5 minutes, since they didn't pay for it.
As the internet and blogs has the power to reach a wider audience with a wider taste in bands, it also has the power to narrow ones attention.

The Noisette's put on an absolutely amazing set, I had no idea they were that great of a band. Shingai Shoniwa was enthralling and it was the highlight of the day for me. Dr. Dog was also very good and it was incredible to see how energized Matt and Kim got the crowd (who also put on a hell of a set).

To bad the Noisettes stole their name from venerable experimental/noise band The Noisettes, who have been operating under that moniker for nearly 15 years. Dick move.

Twilight Sad were great!

anyone see twilight sad. i missed them. they didnt even sell shirts for them. i saw WAS they were pretty great. i saw them w/ arctic monkeys at roseland, they upstaged arctic monkeys so badly.

Lily was never Snape's girlfriend. If you're going to ruin the book, at least ruin it right. They were best friends, but Snape secretly loved her.

did someone seriously post all the harry potter spoilers in here because that is not cool.

I think they were selling those Harry Potter books at my local hardware store last weekend.

Two kids were reading 'Crime & Punishment' when I was there last year for Siren. The music was kind of bland, although, Art Brut were really great to watch live, Man Man were extroidinary, and Stars were pretty swell too. But, how can you complain about a free show @ Coney Island?!
Score = 0
This is hilarious. I swear to god I saw audience members doing the exact same thing at a Sonic Youth show in L.A. on Saturday. Bi-coastal Pottermania!

Basically went only for M.I.A and the Dolls. Both sets were fantastic. That video doesn't do the Dolls justice. They absolutely owned that crowd.
Anyone else caught up in the crowdsurfing extravaganza during the last couple sets? I was kicked in the head at least twice.

I thought this year's line up was kind of lame. The only band I would have wanted to see was Twilight Sad. I like Voxtrot but I think they're kind of boring live and I don't really care for any of the other bands. So I was one of the people who skipped siren to stay home and read harry potter - don't regret it at all.
And posting spoilers in a music forum is a real douche move.
Score = 0
the hipster idiots talked loudly all through the sets. That or eating the meat from Popeyes/kissing & making out with their girlfriends&boyfriends/smoking pot and drinking beer. They were obviously bored to death of all the bands. It was realy the non-hipster M.I.A. and The New York Dolls fans (that came specifically for either of those two, and left) that made the place come alive.

i've been trying to find out what happened in harry potter. i'm glad you posted that. I stopped reading after the 5th book. Harry and Ginny have kids? Harry beats Voldemort by an expelliarmus thing? that seems lame

the people who ruined harry potter are assholes, who probably can't read and listen to shitty music

I was bummed to have missed the Twilight Sad but we went to the Coney Island Buffet instead -- tons of Chinese food and free parking. I also missed the Black Lips set but saw them at the Best Buy table -- why did they have a chicken?

I didn't go to the concert above but I did go see the fray and took my book along with me. I had to wait awhile before the concert started so I thought I'd pass the time with some light reading.
It's so sad. At least she coudln't kill Mr. Weasley.

you can still read the book even with the spoilers, that dude got a lot of it mixed up and some of it wrong.
