Les Savy Fav @ McCarren Park Pool, Brooklyn 7/9/06

Thanks to everyone who made it out to Les Savy Fav at McCarren Park yesterday for the Stereogum/Ice Cream Man-curated kick-off of JellyNYC's rock 'n' roll pool parties. Especially those who Tivo'd Zinedine Zidane's headbutt in order to see great opening sets from Proton Proton, Dragons Of Zynth, and Holy Fuck w/ Beans.

Jelly did a fantastic job with the space, which is bigger than three olympic sized pools, but hasn't seen any swimming since 1983. As promised there were dodgeball tournaments, free ice cream, Brooklyn Brew, and a fancy 27 foot inflatable slip 'n' slide.

LSF's Tim Harrington is a madman, and he's bringing sexy back. Thousands of hipsters were in a frenzy from the second the band ripped into "Tragic Monsters" and Tim ripped off his shirt to reveal a fake sunburn.

Talk about connecting with your audience: the kinetic frontman was pure punk, leaping in and out of the crowd for the entire set, bringing kids onstage to clap and hula hoop, pouring beverages down their throats, and laying down a tarp for them to carry him overhead. He even ran out to the dodgeball court mid-song and joined the match. No singing 'n' slip 'n' slide, though; probably a bit dangerous. (Or not?! Thanks Jeff!) During encore "Rome," Tim poured a bag of confetti on his head, then water, then more confetti. I bet he's a lot of fun at cocktail parties.

Amrit and I took a billion photos, but I've narrowed 'em down to slightly less than a billion for you (sorry, Tim's really photogenic).

Les Savy Fav's setlist:

The DJ love was supplied by the twins of Finger On The Pulse, who also made for some upstanding MCs. Grab DJ Never Forget's "Summer Rotations Mix" right here (MP3).

The fun continues every Sunday until 9/3. There are some great acts lined up -- Of Montreal, Deerhoof, Walkmen, Dead Meadow -- and it's all FREE. Bring your sunscreen.

I took some video of Holy Fuck w/ Beans (YouSendIt). Can anyone help compress the .avi to 100 MB or less so I can YouTube it? E-mail me if you can help! Les Savy video from the show will appear on a live DVD being released by French Kiss.

GOOD ONE.

Seriously, though, great venue, fantastic show. I wasn't so huge on Holy Fuck (Until beans showed up), but yesterday ROCKED. Good sound, too.

Great show! The location was fantastic, and everything was definitely pulled off without a hitch. I thought Holy Fuck were great, and Les Savy Fav was amazing as usual. Tim Harrington actually planted a sloppy kiss on my lips. Very awkward to say the least.

What's up with them letting a bald old fat guy be their front man?

Are people seriously saying the stupid shit they're saying about Tim Harrington, or are the people who called him "someone's dad" and "that bald guy" kidding?

I saw LSF for the first time in February and they rocked. This show must've been awesome.

Haha, some of you seriously have no idea who LSF.

I've got an image of Tim in a pink wrestling outfit burned into my brain, and that image is of pure joy and rock!

But they didn't treat y'all to 'Dishonest Don'!?

song before the encore was 'scout's honor'. syd mentioned that they hadn't performed it live in about 8 years. and the encore was 'who rocks the party' from the cat and the cobra

they played "scout's honor?" that's awesome. they never play that one because it's tough to pull off with a single guitar. i remember actually requesting that song at a show back in 2000. they appologized, saying that they didn't play it anymore. "rodeo" is usually the only way to get them to tell you who they are in song form. wish i had been there.

I saw them in march and they rocked it. Tim actually ran outside the venue and was banging on the glass and yelling at old ladies. Thats the only way to rock! FAV!

I once saw a wedding announcement in the NYTimes where the couple's picture looked exactly like a still of Will Ferrell and Rachael Dretch's "Lovers" sketch from SNL. I posted it on my mom's fridge as a joke only to realize 2 months later the couple was Tim from LSF and his bitch...

That looked like a fun show. I wish I had known about it I would have gone. When I turned 25/26 my drive for going to shows dropped. That would have kicked that drive back into me. I need to get out more. Damn video games.

Hi

I'm bringing in your Beans footage. I'll see if I can cut it in with my own and the board audio for the real killer effect.

The ice cream was great btw.

While it is mad cool that "Pool Party" secured funds to have bands and a meeting place (including a water slide - that I, for one, was not aware of), it freaks me out that the REAL RESIDENTS of Williamsburg who once used McCarran
Pool - were not aware of this...

I guess that since we are on the "other side" as usual we don't count and, again, left out....and having to endure the overcrowding trains and sky high rents..

I commend you on having something happening in McCarrean Pool.

You guys have come into our "hood" and have SERIOUSLY taken over and it sucks...
