Lollapalooza '07: Pearl Jam Celebrate The '90s, Left-Wing Politics, Dennis Rodman
"As a young man who used to ride the El train and listen on a Walkman to people like Patti Smith and Iggy Pop, there's a great deal of meaning to performing on this stage," said hometown hero Eddie Vedder, right before launching into one of the band's least Patti/Pop influenced tunes, "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A My God We Forgot How Many Words Are In This Song's Title." With beers hoisted skyward, we all just wanted to scream "HELLO!" alongside a throng of something approximating 800,000 folks in Grant Park. The song was sorta perfect -- a tune about past days, coming from the band most befitting Gen X nostalgia.
Eddie Vedder (or "EdVed," as !!!'s Nic Offer called him earlier in the day) was everywhere this weekend, turning up to play with everyone from Kings Of Leon (on "Slow Night, Slow Long") to Ben Harper (on Dylan's "Masters Of War"). And of course, PJ buddy Harper returned the favor, joining the Jam's headlining set for protest tune "No More." There was a massive fireworks display during "Even Flow," the biggest sing along we've ever witnessed during "Alive" (check the shitty, fan-captured YouTube!), and the defining WTF moment of the weekend: a "Keep On Rockin' In The Free World" encore with Pearl Jam joined onstage by a ton of fans and Lance Armstrong, ending with Eddie Vedder perched triumphantly upon Dennis Rodman's shoulders.

Alas Ten lovers, 24 songs and no "Jeremy." But we've got the next best thing; take the jump for vid of "Jeremy" from Lolla '92. Also, PJ's setlist and a photo from yesterday when we ran into Dennis Rodman lighting a blunt.

What! No Yellow Ledbetter!

LOL! Rodman wearing an "Artist" wristband.

The lyrics of "Rockin' In the Free World" are an admonishment to the comfortable who blissfully disregard the misery around them. The line "Keep on rockin' in the free world!" is mockingly sarcastic. Did anyone leave the park after its performance, think about its message and become disheartened or embarrassed? Somehow, I doubt it.

This isn't the first time that Vedder ended up on Rodman's shoulders. It's not even the second time.

EdVed and PerFarr 4-eva!

Vedder must have borrowed the idea of getting people on stage from Iggy Pop, who nearly caused anarchy during his set with the invitation to the crowd to rush the stage and dance. Iggy is twice as old as many of the artists who played yesterday, and he blew them away. How great to see some real rock n roll energy, and a legend while there is still time. !!! and TV on the Radio are mediocre bands at best that will fade away like so many other bands. Caught their acts just waiting for PJ and was not impressed.

Wait wait, first you fuss over Muse and now Pearl Jam. Where has the quality control in your music gone people? 2nd rate garbage!
Score = 0
So they'll play crappy hit single "Daughter" at every show, but not good hit singles like "Black" or "Jeremy"...nice.

You had me till the TV on the radio comment. I thought Iggy was AMAZING and I was just off stage so by the time everyone went up I was second row (right by the guy with the guitar). As for TV on the radio I am not a big fan but I thought the show rocked. Other great shows were Ben Harper, Polyphonic Spree (even though I know they are despised here), Stephen Marley, Spoon, Yo Le Tengo, STS9, !!!, and Los Campesinos.
Great show IMHO beat out last year hands down!

Pearl Jam - nice copy of Iggy to invite everyone up on stage. Iggy was better and more impromptu.

RITFW did make me leave Lolla w/ a chip on my shoulder about how fuc@$ing good I have it. So I took it upon myself to take a stroll down Mich Av. and help the first homeless person I could w some cash. They may have used the cash for drugs, but at least I felt better about myself after all the money I spent during the weekend on bullshi$.
Score = 0
First anyone who thinks Iggy Pop was great must of been on some good shit. Second anyone who down plays PJ's performance as anything less than fucking awesome is just plain stupid. Fan or no fan it is undeniable that they not only put on the best show of the weekend but one of the best I have ever seen. Pearl Jam will go down as the greatest live band to ever take the stage.
Score = 0
Hey, RITFW has whatever meaning a listener gets from it. And I wont feel bad for a second that I worked hard in order to pay my way and enjoy a good festival weekend. Extremes aside, many people have the same options as everyone else. I'm not rich, and I am not poor, and circumstance only goes so far as an excuse...right up to the point where personal choice comes into play.
Score = 0
Great performance by Pearl Jam, but why bring the bullsh1t into it. Bono is enough to have in the world, i felt my image of EdVed was sorely tainted after his cringworthy waffling. 'I dont want to take advantage of having your attention..' but i'm going to do it anyway and sing this pathetically crap song i wrote because i'm so fond of myself i've decided i'm a pseudo-intellectual radical anti-war-warrier. Please. As for alive being the greatest sing along of all time, eddie himself got pissed off with the crowd when they couldnt sing along without him during the encore, he came out trying to get it going but to no avail. if that was ireland you wouldnt stop us. Everywhere else in the world in fact, when better man starts he doesnt have to open his mouth, the crowd takes over, we needed severe encouragement
Score = 0
Where I was standing, no encouragement was needed - everyone sang along on even the rarest songs. Maybe it was just up in the front (though I wasn't really that close...)
And they know the double sided meaning behind Rocking in the Free World - that is why they play it. Works pretty perfectly in cases like that for those paying attention.
Score = 0
@Oscar: I had no doubt that PJ knew the meaning of the lyrics of "Rockin'..." It's the ignorant (including those in denial, like PjStyle) among the audience who have my contempt. I fear those "paying attention" are in a very small minority.
